Ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) has profound effects on plant growth and development, and exposure varies with ozone depletion and across geographic regions, with ecosystem and agricultural consequences. This book deals with large-scale impacts but also how UV-B affects plants at the molecular level is also fascinating, and the UV-B photoreceptor has only recently been characterised. While UV-B radiation can be damaging, it also has a more positive role in plant photomorphogenesis. Consequently UV-B treatments are being developed as innovative approaches to improve horticulture. Uwe Johnson wurde am 20. Juli 1934 in Kammin (Pommern), dem heutigen Kamien Pomorski, geboren und starb am 22. oder 23. Februar 1984 in Sheerness-on-Sea. 1945 floh er mit seiner Mutter und seiner Schwester zunächst nach Recknitz, dann nach Güstrow in Mecklenburg. Sein Vater wurde von der Roten Armee interniert und 1948 für tot erklärt. 1953 schrieb er sich an der Universität Leipzig als Germanistikstudent ein und legte sein Diplom über Ernst Barlachs Der gestohlene Mond ab. Bereits während des Studiums begann er mit der Niederschrift des Romans Ingrid Babendererde . Reifeprüfung 1953. Er bot ihn 1956 verschiedenen Verlagen der DDR an, die eine Publikation ablehnten. 1957 lehnte auch Peter Suhrkamp die Veröffentlichung ab. Der Roman wurde erst nach dem Tode von Uwe Johnson veröffentlicht. Der erste veröffentlichte Roman von Uwe Johnson ist Mutmassungen über Jakob. Von 1966 – 1968 lebte Uwe Johnson in New York. Das erste Jahr dort arbeitete er als Schulbuch-Lektor, das zweite wurde durch ein Stipendium finanziert. Am 29. Januar 1968 schrieb er in New York die ersten Zeilen der Jahrestage. Aus dem Leben von Gesine Cresspahl nieder. Deren erste ›Lieferung‹ erschien 1970. Die Teile zwei und drei schlossen sich 1971 und 1973 an. 1974 zog Uwe Johnson nach Sheerness-on Sea in der englischen Grafschaft Kent an der Themsemündung. Dort begann er unter einer Schreibblockade zu leiden, weshalb der letzte Teil der Jahrestage erst 1983 erscheinen konnte. 1979 war Uwe Johnson Gastdozent für Poetik an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt. Ein Jahr später erschienen seine Vorlesungen unter dem Titel Begleitumstände. Sein Nachlass befindet sich im Uwe Johnson-Archiv an der Universität Rostock. Rolf Michaelis, geboren 1933, hat 1958 über Die Struktur von Hölderlins Oden promoviert. Er war Feuilletonredakteur bei verschiedenen Zeitungen, u. a. langjähriger Leiter des Literaturteils der Zeit. Buchveröffentlichungen u. a. über Gerhart Hauptmann, Heinrich von Kleist, Federico García Lorca und Uwe Johnson.

Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.

Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced. The book includes chapters that summarize the importance of nematodes as model organisms in the fields of genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, nutrition, ecology and parasitology. Of interest to a broad audience across a wide spectrum of disciplines, the book is useful for biologists working on comparative studies to investigate biological processes across organisms; medical scientists and pharmacologist for exploration of drugs and medicine (including the use of genome editing to eliminate diseases); ecologists considering nematodes as indicators for environment changes; and parasitologists for host-parasite interactions. Many other researchers can use this book as a benchmark for the broad implications of nematology research on other aspects of science.

"Liebes Fritzchen" überschrieb Uwe Johnson den ersten Brief an Fritz J. Raddatz aus dem Jahr 1966. Die im Freundes- und engeren Bekanntenkreis geläufige Verkehrsform ist der humorvolle Ausdruck freundschaftlicher Nähe der beiden, die sich seit 1959 persönlich kannten. Im Gegenzug schrieb Raddatz: "Lieber großer Uwe Johnson", "Lieber große Uwe" oder, sehr häufig, Uwe Johnson/ Fritz J. Raddatz Der Briefwechsel "Lieber Groß-Uwe". In diesen Benennungen drückt sich eine Vertrautheit aus, die nicht zu unterschätzen ist, zumal Johnson als der Schwierige, als der Unnahbare galt. Dieser Briefwechsel, beginnend im August 1966, endend im August 1983, zwischen zwei ehemaligen Bürgern der DDR, gehorcht nur scheinbar den vorgegebenen Rollen der beiden: hier der Schriftsteller, dort der Verleger, Lektor, Herausgeber und Kritiker. Da die Korrespondenzpartner wissen, daß Literatur nicht im gesellschaftsfreien Raum stattfindet, sie doch gleichwohl dazu Distanz benötigt, um ihre Wahrheit präsentieren zu können, thematisieren ihre Briefe alle Aspekte der Literatur: ihre Entstehungsbedingungen, die Technik des Schreibens, die Kritik - nicht zuletzt die Politik. Als Persönliches zur Sprache gebracht wird, kommt es zum Zerwürfnis.
