Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875) war ein reisefreudiger Mann. Im Frühjahr 1831 fuhr er durch Deutschland und hielt seine Eindrücke in einem Reisebuch fest. Es sind die Schönheiten der Gegend um Dresden, die ihn besonders entzückten, es war die freundliche Aufnahme »vortrefflicher Menschen«, die ihm guttat, und es war die geheimnisvolle Melancholie, die über der Sächsischen Schweiz liegt, die seiner Herzensstimmung entgegenkam. Der Reisebericht, der in der ersten deutschen Gesamtausgabe von 1847 erschien, war um zahlreiche politische, religiöse und persönliche Passagen gekürzt worden, Kürzungen, die spätere Ausgaben beibehielten. Hier liegt Andersens Reisebericht erstmals mit dem ungekürzten Text vor: in der vollständigen Fassung in Deutschland ein bislang fast unbekanntes Werk.

Am Anfang steht der alte Kinderreim: »Es war einmal ein Mann, der hatte einen Schwamm.« Dann aber machen sich Reim und Handlung selbständig, und der Mann mit dem Kindergemüt und der seltsamen Kleidung geht auf anarchisch-witzige Weltreise. Er trifft einen Biber mit Ottilie, ein Schiff, das auf sechs Füßen läuft, und ein Hemd, "das war ihm seltsam fremd". Auf dem Mond schließlich begegnet ihm ein Mann, "der hatte einen Schwamm / und so fängt die Geschichte von vorne an." Hans Traxler, Autor und Illustrator dieses Kultbuchs, war Mitarbeiter der legendären Zeitschrift »pardon« und Gründungsmitglied des Satiremagazins »Titanic«. Gemeinsam mit Robert Gernhardt, F. W. Bernstein u. a. schrieb er als "Neue Frankfurter Schule" ein Kapitel deutsche Philosophiegeschichte ("Die schärfsten Kritiker der Elche / waren früher selber welche"). Nach »Die Wahrheit über Hänsel und Gretel« erschien 1979 im Insel Verlag mit »Es war einmal ein Mann« ein Buch, das zum Familienklassiker wurde. Wir legen dieses lange vergriffene Standardwerk der Nonsense-Literatur als schöne, gebundene Ausgabe zum Schenken und Wiederlesen neu vor. - illustriert und mit einem Nachwort von Hans Traxler

Hans Traxler wurde 1929 in Herrlich, einem Dorf in Nordböhmen, geboren und ist als Maler, Illustrator und Autor tätig. Er war langjähriger Mitarbeiter der Satirezeitschriften Pardon und Titanic, die er mitbegründete. Traxlers Werke erschienen außerdem im ZEIT-Magazin, in der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung, in der Süddeutschen Zeitung. Er wurde mit vielen Preisen für sein Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet, u. a. 2015 mit dem Wilhelm-Busch-Preis und zuletzt mit dem Friedrich-Stoltze-Preis 2018.
