Von den frühen Zeugnissen aus der Kindheit, wie etwa einem bisher unbekannten Jugendtagebuch, das transkribiert und z.T. faksimiliert vorgelegt wird, über Dokumente aus seinen Studien- und Exiljahren bis hin zur Rückkehr nach Frankfurt und seiner Arbeit am Institut für Sozialforschung und an der Frankfurter Universität verfolgt der Band das Leben Adornos am Leitfaden von überaus anschaulichen, prägnanten, im besten Sinne »sprechenden« Zeugnissen. Neben einem weiteren Tagebuch aus dem Jahr 1949 finden sich zahlreiche, hier erstmals veröffentlichte Briefe, Notizen, Kompositionen, Photographien und Skizzen aus seinem Nachlaß.

Band 5: Briefe an die Eltern. 1939–1951

Als Adorno seine Eltern im Juni 1939 in Havanna wiedersah, waren sie erst wenige Wochen auf Kuba. Oscar und Maria Wiesengrund hatten sich in letzter Minute aus Nazideutschland retten können. Von Kuba zogen sie Ende 1939 zunächst nach Florida und dann nach New York, wo sie von August 1940 an bis zum Ende ihres Lebens blieben. Erst mit Adornos Übersiedlung nach Kalifornien Ende 1941 berichten seine Briefe wieder und fast regelmäßig alle vierzehn Tage von der Arbeit und den Lebensumständen sowie den Freunden, Bekannten und Größen des damaligen Hollywood. Erzählungen von der gemeinsamen Arbeit mit Max Horkheimer, Thomas Mann und Hanns Eisler stehen neben Partyberichten, Clownereien mit Charlie Chaplin und unglücklichen Liebesaffären. Die Briefe bergen aber auch die ungestillte Sehnsucht nach Europa: So beginnt Adorno schon bei Kriegseintritt Amerikas, sich Gedanken über die Rückkehr zu machen. Die »Briefe an die Eltern« - die wohl offensten und persönlichsten, die er je geschrieben hat - eröffnen nicht nur einen Blick auf die Erfahrungen, die am Anfang der berühmten ›Minima Moralia‹ standen, sondern zeigen Adorno von einer bisher unbekannten, überaus persönlichen Seite.

Nematodes, which are small multi cellular organisms have been used as biological models since the 1960's. The nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans is a free-living nematode, about 1mm in length, that lives in temperate soil environments. It is made up of about 1000 cells, and has a short life cycle of only 2 weeks. It was the first multicellular organism to have its whole genome sequenced. The book includes chapters that summarize the importance of nematodes as model organisms in the fields of genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, nutrition, ecology and parasitology. Of interest to a broad audience across a wide spectrum of disciplines, the book is useful for biologists working on comparative studies to investigate biological processes across organisms; medical scientists and pharmacologist for exploration of drugs and medicine (including the use of genome editing to eliminate diseases); ecologists considering nematodes as indicators for environment changes; and parasitologists for host-parasite interactions. Adornos und Eislers Buch, das erstmals 1947 in englischer Sprache erschien, gehört zu den Klassikern der Musik-, aber auch der Filmtheorie. Es entstand als Gemeinschaftsarbeit im amerikanischen Exil, in der Folge zweier von der Rockefeller Foundation geförderter Forschungsprojekte: Im Rahmen des von Paul Lazarsfeld geleiteten »Radio Research Project« betrieb Adorno Studien zur Musik im Rundfunk, die in das zu Lebzeiten Fragment gebliebene Buch Current of Music eingegangen sind; Eisler lotete im »Film Music Project« die Funktionen, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Filmmusik aus. Dabei galt Eislers Arbeit zunächst weniger abstrakten Analysen und Erwägungen als der Komposition exemplarischer Filmpartituren und der anschließenden Produktion und Evaluation von Demonstrationsfilmen. Zu den künstlerischen Ergebnissen des Projekts zählen das berühmte Quintett Vierzehn Arten den Regen zu beschreiben als neue und neuartige Filmmusik zu Joris Ivens' »cinépoème« Regen ebenso wie die Tonspuren zu White Flood und zu A Child Went Forth, einem frühen Film von Joseph Losey. Auch komponierte Eisler zu einem Ausschnitt aus dem Klassiker The Grapes of Wrath von John Ford zwei experimentelle Filmpartituren als Alternative zu Alfred Newmans Musik in der Verleihfassung. Die DVD, die dem Band beiliegt, dokumentiert diese Filme und Filmmusikexperimente teils in originaler und restaurierter, teils in rekonstruierter Form. Cineasten und Philosophen, Musik- und Kulturwissenschaftler werden gleichermaßen begeistert sein. Erstmals liegt das großangelegte »Film Music Project« in der Form vor, die ihm gebührt.Mit in ihrem originalen deutschen Wortlaut erstmals publizierten Textpassagen, einem Entwurf zum Filmmusikbuch von Theodor W.
