In der Rotterdamer Kneipe "Zora’s Place", einem Treffpunkt der ortsansässigen Fußballhooligans, wird hitzig diskutiert. Über Wilmer, der bei einer Hooliganschlacht von seinem Bruder mit einem Baseballschläger erschlagen worden ist. Über den Onkel der beiden, Hero Witlox, der anordnet, die Leiche auf einer Müllkippe abzulegen, weil Wilmer zur gegnerischen Truppe übergelaufen war und als Abtrünniger einer ordentlichen Bestattung nicht würdig ist. Und über Jolente, Wilmers Schwester, die sich mit aller Entschiedenheit gegen den Beschluß ihres Onkels auflehnt. Es ist das Antigone-Drama des Sophokles, das A. F. Th. van der Heijden aufnimmt, um vor den Augen des Lesers eine zeitgenössische Tragödie von archaischer Wucht ablaufen zu lassen. Kraftvoll, drastisch erzählt seine Novelle von einer Familie, die ihrem Verhängnis nicht entkommt, von einem Mann, der sein Leben auf Treibsand gebaut hat.

Worüber man nicht reden kann, darüber muß man einen Roman schreiben, so lautet die Lebens- und Überlebensmaxime A. F. Th. van der Heijdens. Es ist die einzige Art und Weise, wie er dem Schicksal seines 22jährigen Sohnes begegnen kann. Tonio van der Heijden starb am 23. Mai des Jahres 2010 in Amsterdam: Ein Auto überfuhr ihn am frühen Morgen auf dem Weg nach Hause. In einem zweiteiligen Roman findet und erfindet der Ich-Erzähler Adri die ersten sechs Lebensjahre seines Sohnes, und zwar von der Geburt im Juni 1988 bis zum Schuleintritt. Dieser Romanteil gehorcht dem Motto: den Sohn festhalten, ihn schützen vor allen Gefahren. Der zweite Teil konstruiert, in Form eines Kriminalromans, die für sich betrachtet völlig unlogischen Todesumstände von Tonio. Entstanden ist auf diese Weise ein berührender und bewegender Roman über das Unglück schlechthin, über die Unbegreifbarkeit des Unvorstellbaren – zugleich ein Buch über die unabweisbaren Fragen nach der eigenen Schuld, ein Buch der Trauer. Wenn es angesichts der Unfaßbarkeit des Todes eine Form der Trauer gibt, die den Lebenden Zukunft eröffnet und Zuversicht ermöglicht – so muß sie die Gestalt dieses Herz und Kopf in Bann schlagendes Requiems besitzen. Dieses Buch dementiert die weitverbreitete Meinung, angesichts des Todes sei alles sinnlos.

Widerborstig sind bei Robby nicht nur die Haare, sondern auch sein ganzes Verhalten. Ausdruck jugendlicher Minderwertigkeitsgefühle, gegen die er sich verzweifelt wehrt. Und da sein Vater als Radrennfahrer eine kleine Karriere gemacht hat, ist es naheliegend, daß Robby ebenfalls als Radrennfahrer Bestätigung zu finden hofft. Von der Geschwindigkeit erwartet er sich: die Loslösung aus dem Alltag, das Hinüberspringen aus dem Gewöhnlichen in eine freie Existenz. Doch wenn man den Rausch der immer größeren Geschwindigkeit benötigt, muß man auf schnellere Gefährte umsteigen. Motorräder und frisierte Autos aber kosten Geld, das sich Robby durch kleine Gaunereien zu verschaffen sucht. So verwundert es nicht, daß er eines Nachts eine Polizeisperre durchbricht und in der anschließenden Verfolgungsjagd mit höchster Geschwindigkeit gegen einen Baum rast. Mit der Rekonstruktion des Leidenswegs eines jungen Niederländers ist van der Heijden ein eindrucksvolles Jugendpsychogramm gelungen.

»Ich kann mich nicht mal richtig vorstellen, denn ich habe meinen Namen verhökert.« Tatsächlich hat der göttliche Apollo bereits Anfang der 1960er, in Geldnöten befindlich, seinen guten Namen an die NASA verkauft – für einen Pappenstiel, so daß der ehemalige Hausherr des Delphi-Orakels künftig vom Horoskopschreiben leben muß. Bei seinen Studien der menschlichen Natur stößt er auf den jungen Niederländer Tibbolt Satink, Jahrgang 1973 und seit seiner Geburt von einem Fußleiden geplagt. Deutet letzteres auf Tibbolt als einen modernen Ödipus? Einen, dem seine leiblichen Eltern fremd sind, einen, der von dem Liebespärchen, das sich 1973 bei Dreharbeiten zu einem Pornofilm kennenlernt, nichts weiß? Tibbolt hat große Pläne; so will er die wüsteste Hooliganschlacht Amsterdams anzetteln, vor allem aber die lästigen Begleiterscheinungen des menschlichen Lebens und Sterbens einem Alter ego mit Namen Movo (niederländisch kurz für »schlimme Füße«) aufhalsen. An den Tapes, auf denen Tibbolt von seinem Vorhaben berichtet, ist nicht nur Apollo sehr interessiert.
