        Religious Tourism and Globalization

        The Search for Identity and Transformative Experience

        by Darius Liutikas, Razaq Raj, Vitor Ambrósio, Silvia Aulet Serrallonga, Caglar Bideci, Mujde Bideci, Elzbieta Bilska-Wodecka, Dino Bozonelos, Nour Farra-Haddad, Stephen F. Haller, Jaffer Idris, Antonietta Ivona, Isilda Leitão, Dimitrios Mylonopoulos, Polyxeni Moira, Eleanor O’Keeffe, Spyridon Parthenis, Donatella Privitera, Ricardo Nicolas Progano, Alison T. Smith

        Is it possible to identify the positive and negative effects of globalization on religious tourism or to estimate the transformation of the internal and external constructs of pilgrimage by these effects? In order to address these questions, this book highlights the importance of the search for identity and transformative experience during religious tourism. It also looks at how, recently, globalization has played a part in the changes of the concept of personal and social identity and the transformative experience of pilgrimage. The chapters, consisting of carefully selected case studies, analyse possible effects including the adoption of different new rituals, new pilgrims' values, changes of tradition, acceptance of technologic innovations, development of new business models, and other environmental and sociocultural changes. The book provides: · a conceptual framework for understanding the impacts of globalization; · integrated cross-disciplinary approaches; and · an insight into major religious travel practices in the age of identity challenges and worldwide transformations. It will be suitable for researchers and students of religious tourism, pilgrimage, identity tourism, as well as related subjects such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, theology, history and cultural studies.

        Study on Yao Literature Panwang Dage and its English Translation

        by Peng Qing

        The book studys the translation of Panwang Dage, a great Yao epic, from Chinese to English. It initially illustrates the text from linguistic level and cultural level, providing the basis for the use of translation strategies and methods focusing on oral literature of the southern ethnic minorities in China. Further, the author conducts theoretical interpretation and derivations, and puts forward some new ideas, like "dynamic equivalence of domestication and foreignization", "progressive translation based on cultural memes", etc., which can work in the translation of Chinese folk classics, especially the epics of southern China.

        Urban transformations and public health in the emergent city

        by Michael Keith, Andreza Aruska de Souza Santos, Susan Parnell

        The imperatives of public health shaped our understanding of the cities of the global north in the first industrial revolutions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They are doing so again today, reflecting new geographies of the urban age of the twenty-first. Emergent cities in parts of the globe experiencing most profound urban growth face major problems of economic, ecological and social sustainability when making sense of new health challenges and designing policy frameworks for public health infrastructures. The rapid evolution of complex 'systems of systems' in today's cities continually reconfigure the urban commons, reshaping how we understand urban public health, defining new problems and drawing on new data tools for analysis that work from the historical legacies and geographical variations that structure public health systems.

        The Great Transformation

        Politische und ökonomische Ursprünge von Gesellschaften und Wirtschaftssystemen

        by Karl Polanyi, Heinrich Jelinek, R. M. MacIver

        The Great Transformation, 1944 erschienen, geht von der These aus, daß erst die Herausbildung einer liberalen Marktwirtschaft mit ihrem »freien Spiel der Kräfte« zu jener charakteristischen »Herauslösung« und Verselbständigung der Ökonomie gegenüber der Gesellschaft geführt hat, die historisch ein Novum darstellt und die bürgerliche Gesellschaft von allen anderen Gesellschaftsformationen unterscheidet. The Great Transformation - das bezeichnet den Übergang von »integrierten« Gesellschaften, in denen die wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten der Individuen in einen übergreifenden kulturellen Zusammenhang eingebettet waren, zur nicht integrierten Gesellschaft vom Typ der freien Marktwirtschaft.

        Medicine transformed

        Health, disease and society in Europe 1800–1930

        by Deborah Brunton

        During the nineteenth century medicine underwent a radical transformation. In 1800, the body was still understood in terms of humors and fluids, and a wide range of individuals provided medical care. Institutions were marginal to the medical enterprise, and governments took almost no part in providing medical services. By 1930 a recognisably modern medicine had begun to emerge across Europe. New understandings of the body opened up surgery and treatments, and hospitals became centres for care, research and training. In Medicine transformed, original essays by established scholars in the social history of medicine explore these developments and examine topics such as the military and colonial medicine, the role of women and access to care. The essays provide an accessible introduction to the subject, setting nineteenth and early twentieth-century medicine in its political, cultural, intellectual and economic contexts. Medicine transformed is complemented by a companion volume of primary and secondary readings: Health, disease and society in Europe, 1800-1930: A source book. ;

        The Transformation of European Football

        Towards the Europeanisation of the national game

        by Arne Niemann, Borja Garcia, Wyn Grant

        The book examines the transformation of European football in recent years by focusing on the impact of Europe in general and the EU in particular on the way that the game has evolved in a broad cross section of European states. The book brings together two significant research agendas: first, that on the governance of sport in Europe/the European Union; secondly, that within European integration studies on 'Europeanisation' (most commonly understood at the process of change in the domestic arena resulting from European integration). The concept of Europeanisation and in particular' top down' Europeanisation is used to shape the individual country case studies. Other transformational factors such as globalization are also assessed. The three chapters in the introductory section set the context within which the transformation of European football has occurred with particular emphasis on the role of UEFA and EU institutions. The ten country studies in the central part of the book include the five leading football nations in Europe and smaller countries that are facing new challenges in the competitive environment of modern European football. They include an example of a country that is a recent accession state and one outside the EU. What emerges from these chapters is both the shaping influence of Europeanisation but also the extent to which it is countered and modified by national culture and structures. What is also noticeable the sense of decline amongst some of the small and even larger footballing nations in the continent. This book will be of interest to students of European politics, sports governance and football, it also represents a substantial contribution to the debate on Europeanisation. ;

        Die Metamorphose der Welt

        by Ulrich Beck, Frank Jakubzik

        Als 1986 Risikogesellschaft erschien, machte das Ulrich Beck schlagartig berühmt. Der Soziologe wies nicht nur auf die Nebenfolgen der Industriemoderne hin, er betonte zugleich, dass die Welt sich auch dann permanent verändert, wenn wir meinen, einen vorübergehenden Zustand mit Institutionen und Konzepten einfrieren zu können. Mit beispielloser Neugier spürte Beck den Indizien des Wandels nach und öffnete uns mit der Lust an der terminologischen Innovation die Augen für Individualisierung, Globalisierung und die Transformation der Arbeitswelt. Am 1. Januar 2015 verstarb Ulrich Beck überraschend und viel zu früh. Bis zu seinem Tod arbeitete er an einem Buch, das beides ist: Summe und radikale Weiterführung seiner Theorie. Während es früher Fixpunkte gab, an denen wir erkennen konnten, was stabil blieb und was nicht, erleben wir heute eine allumfassende Verwandlung, die uns orientierungslos werden lässt. Die Metamorphose der Welt ist der Versuch, diese Globalisierung des Wandels zu verstehen und hochaktuelle Herausforderungen wie Erderwärmung und Migration auf den Begriff zu bringen.

        Transforming conflict through social and economic development

        Practice and policy lessons from Northern Ireland and the Border Counties

        by Sandra Buchanan

        Transforming conflict through social and economic development examines lessons learned from the Northern Ireland and Border Counties conflict transformation process through social and economic development and their consequent impacts and implications for practice and policymaking, with a range of functional recommendations produced for other regions emerging from and seeking to transform violent conflict. It provides, for the first time, a comprehensive assessment of the region's transformation activity, largely amongst grassroots actors, enabled by a number of specific funding programmes, namely the International Fund for Ireland, Peace I, II and III and INTERREG I, II and IIIA. These programmes have been responsible for a huge increase in grassroots practice which to date has attracted virtually no academic analysis; this book seeks to fill this gap. In focusing on the politics of the socioeconomic activities that underpinned the elite negotiations of the peace process, key theoretical transformation concepts are firstly explored, followed by an examination of the social and economic context of Northern Ireland and the border counties. The three programmes and their impacts are then assessed before considering what policy lessons can be learned and what recommendations can be made for practice. This is underpinned by a range of semi-structured interviews and the author's own experience as a project promoter through these programmes in the border counties for more than a decade. The book will be essential reading for students, practitioners and policymakers in the fields of peace and conflict studies, conflict transformation, peacebuilding, post-agreement reconstruction and the political economy of conflict and those interested in contemporary developments in the Northern Ireland peace process. ;

        Crisis and Transformation

        by Jean-Pierre Wils (Ed.)

        We live in an age of upheaval and crisis; our existence is at the threshold of a new epoch that leaves nothing as it was before. It became clear that the natural materials of our world in transformation were a finite and exhaustible resource. The ambitious projects of humankind were already beset by doubts and the optimism of something better in store for us in the future became ever more subdued. An era of sceptical thinking dawned. What was only recently celebrated as an achievement is today placed in question: democracy, human rights and the bond of solidarity between the generations. But the art of dialogue must always be preserved. The capacity for critical reflection must be repeatedly practised and the sensitivity of our perception deepened.
