        Reise nach Warschau

Eine Schilderung aus den Jahren 1791–1793

by Joachim Christoph Friedrich Schulz, Karl Dedecius, Daniel Chodowiecki, Wolfram Schäfer, Klaus Zernack

        Roman

        by Bruno Bayen, Peter Handke

The Papal Reform of the Eleventh Century

Lives of Pope Leo IX and Pope Gregory VII

        by I. Robinson

The eleventh-century papal reform transformed western European Church and society and permanently altered the relations of Church and State in the west. The reform was inaugurated by Pope Leo IX (1048-54) and given a controversial change of direction by Pope Gregory VII (1073-85). This book contains the earliest biographies of both popes, presented here for the first time in English translation with detailed commentaries. The biographers of Leo IX were inspired by his universally acknowledged sanctity, whereas the biographers of Gregory VII wrote to defend his reputation against the hostility generated by his reforming methods and his conflict with King Henry IV. Also included is a translation of Book to a Friend, written by Bishop Bonizo of Sutri soon after the death of Gregory VII, as well as an extract from the violently anti-Gregorian polemic of Bishop Benzo of Alba (1085) and the short biography of Leo IX composed in the papal curia in the 1090s by Bishop Bruno of Segni. These fascinating narrative sources bear witness to the startling impact of the papal reform and of the 'Investiture Contest', the conflict of empire and papacy that was one of its consequences. An essential collection of translated texts for students of medieval history.

        by Jean-Claude Bauer, Frédéric Brremaud

The result of the combined work of Frédéric BRÉMAUD and Jean-Claude BAUER – the latter having covered the 1987 trial for Antenne 2 – KLAUS BARBIE, THE RAT'S ROUTE retraces the life of one of the greatest war criminals of the 20th century. Drawing on historical sources and the participation of Jean-Olivier VIOUT, the Deputy General Prosecutor during this historic trial, as well as Serge KLARSFELD, a staunch advocate for the cause of Jewish deportees – who pens the foreword to this work – they deliver a necessary narrative, bearing witness to one of the most resonant trials in history.

        Jean Renoir

        by Martin O'Shaughnessy

Accessible and original analysis of all Jean Renoir's sound films, including those he made in Hollywood - this is the first major study to appear for a number of years and brings new light on some of the director's most celebrated films.. Illuminating account of critical debates concerning Renoir, and focusing on hitherto neglected areas such as gender, nation and ethnicity the book asks us to rethink our understanding of Renoir's political commitment.. Traces his output from the silent period to the age of television, tying his work into a fast-shifting, socio-historical context.. Detailed analyses of his sound films map his evolving style while individual chapters cover Renoir's career and writings, critical debates, the silent and early sound films, the Popular Front period, Renoir amèricain and the later films.

        Weihnachten mit Rainer Maria Rilke

        by Hella Sieber-Rilke

        Liebesgedichte

        by Nicolas Born, Tom Schulz

        by Jorge Alderete

Mask is a tribute to Bruno Munari’s book. Dr. Alderete shows the mask not as a metaphor for hiding, but as a liberation of the spirit, that allows us to relate with ourselves and to know and understand us in an unexpected way.

        Sade. Fourier. Loyola

by Roland Barthes, Maren Sell, Jürgen Hoch

RNAi for Plant Improvement and Protection

by Bruno Mezzetti, Jeremy Sweet, Lorenzo Burgos

RNA interference (RNAi) has the potential to make major contributions towards sustainable crop production and protection with minimal environmental impacts compared to other technologies. RNAi is being developed and exploited both within plants (i.e. host-induced gene silencing, HIGS) and/or as topical applications (e.g. spray-induced gene silencing, SIGS) for targeting pest and pathogen genes and for manipulating endogenous gene expression in plants. Chapters by international experts review current knowledge on RNAi, methods for developing RNAi systems in GM plants and applications for crop improvement, crop production and crop protection. Chapters examine both endogenous systems in GM plants and exogenous systems where interfering RNAs are applied to target plants, pests and pathogens. The biosafety of these different systems is examined and methods for risk assessment for food, feed and environmental safety are discussed. Finally, aspects of the regulation of technologies exploiting RNAi and the socio-economic impacts of RNAi technologies are discussed. Chapter 1: Introduction to RNAi in Plant Production and Protection. Bruno Mezzetti, Jeremy Sweet and Lorenzo Burgos Chapter 2: Gene silencing to induce pathogen-derived resistance in plants. Zhen Liao, Elena Zuriaga, Ángela Polo and Maria L. Badenes Chapter 3: Exogenous application of small RNAs as a tool for gene function discovering. Barbara Molesini and Tiziana Pandolfini Chapter 4: The “Trojan Horse” approach for successful RNA interference in inscects. Dimitrios Kontogiannatos, Anna Kolliopoulou and Luc Swevers. Chapter 5: Biogenesis and functional RNAi in fruit-trees. Michel Ravelonandro and Pascal Briard Chapter 6: Gene silencing or gene editing: the pros and cons. Huw D Jones Chapter 7: Application of RNAi technology in Forest Trees. Matthias Fladung, Hely Haggman and S. Sutela Chapter 8: Host-induced gene silencing and spray-induced gene silencing for crop protection against viruses. Angela Ricci, Silvia Sabbadini, Laura Miozzi, Bruno Mezzetti and Emanuela Noris. Chapter 9: Small talk and large impact: the importance of small RNA molecules in the fight of plant diseases. Kristian Persson Hodén and Christina Dixelius Chapter 10: dsRNA stability during external applications – an overview. Ivelin Pantchev, Goritsa Rakleova and Atanas Atanassov Chapter 11: Boosting dsRNA delivery in plant and insect cells with peptide- and polymer-based carriers: cases-based current status and future perspectives. Kristof de Schutter, Olivier Christiaens, Clauvis Nji Tizi Taning and Guy Smagghe Chapter 12: Environmental safety assessment of RNAi plants for pest control. Salvatore Arpaia, Olivier Christiaens, Paul Henning Krogh, Kimberly Parker and Jeremy Sweet Chapter 13: Food and feed safety assessment of RNAi plants and products. Hanspeter Naegeli, Gijs Kleter and Antje Dietz-Pfeilstetter Chapter 14: Regulatory aspects of RNAi in plant production. Werner Schenkel and Achim Gathmann Chapter 15: The Economics of RNAi technology in plant breeding: from the innovation landscape to consumer acceptance. Jean-Jacques Beineix

        by Philip Powrie

This volume is the first to examine, in either French or English, the films of Jean-Jacques Beineix, often seen as the best example of the 1980s cinéma du look, with cult films, such as Diva and Betty Blue (37º 2 le matin) .. After an introduction which places Beineix in the context of the 1980s and the arguments centering on a postmodern cinema, the volume devotes a chapter to each of Beineix's feature films, including the film which marked his return to feature film making after a break of a decade, Mortel Transfert (2001). Prefaced by an excellent foreword by the director himself, which includes a broad condemnation of French critics. Includes many illustrations direct from the director's own collection, complementing the interviews Powrie made with him and his collaborators.

At Night, Everyone is an Enemy

        True stories

        by Bruno Schrep

One wrong word, one perceived insult – a small matter may begin a chain of events resulting in tragedy. This was the case with Anothai S., who died in a brawl in Hamburg in September 2014. A quote from the circumstances of this death, reconstructed by Bruno Schrep for the SPIEGEL magazine, has given this book its title. “At Night, Everyone is an Enemy” compiles true stories of people who have been torn from their normal lives and plunged into despair from one moment to the next. In one case, it is a rumour that destroys all plans – the accusation of having abused children. Likewise, the information that your father and mother, who raised you, are not your biological parents, can turn your life upside down. And many an accident destroys not only the life of the victim, but also that of the person who caused the accident. As an accurate observer, Bruno Schrep describes human tragedies with empathy, but also with a keen eye for structural problems.
