There are a number of controversial issues that surround agricultural biotechnology and genetically modified products. International trade and policies are at the forefront of these controversies. International concern over the threat to species and ecosystems caused by human activities is at an all time high, which may result in high costs to present and future generations. The economic costs and benefits associated with the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources of actual or potential value for food and agriculture is largely unknown. Economic instruments that can encourage implementation of socially optimal genetic resource conservation strategies as well as the sharing of the real benefits and costs are a useful measurement tool. This book is an edited compilation of papers from the Symposium on the Economics of Valuation and Conservation of Genetic Resources for Agriculture held in Rome in May 1996. It addresses some of the key issues involved in the estimation of the economic value of conserving genetic resources for agriculture. It covers the modelling of the value of Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs), empirical studies of PGRs (including field diversity and yield vulnerability), seven empirical studies of PGR breeding values, property rights in PGRs and the implications of modern biotechnology methods for PGR values. Manuel Puig wurde 1932 in der argentinischen Provinzstadt General Villegas geboren. Schon früh zeigte sich seine Begeisterung für das Kino und die Vorliebe für Melodramen des Hollywoodfilms der dreißiger und vierziger Jahre. Er studierte auf Drängen der Eltern zunächst Architektur in Buenos Aires, wechselte aber bald in die Fakultät für Philosophie und Literatur. 1956 reiste er mit einem Stipendium des »Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia«, der bedeutendsten italienischen Filmhochschule, nach Rom, wo er bei Vittorio De Sica und Cesare Zavattini lernte und Drehbücher zu schreiben begann. Zwischen 1961 und 1962 arbeitete er als Regieassistent bei verschiedenen Projekten in Rom und Buenos Aires mit. Nach Aufenthalten in London und Stockholm zog er 1963 vorübergehend nach New York, wo er seinen ersten Roman, La traición de Rita Hayworth (1968, dt. Von Rita Hayworth verraten, 1976), schrieb. Der Fortsetzungsroman Boquitas pintadas (1969, dt. Der schönste Tango der Welt, 1975) entwickelte sich bald zum Bestseller. Mit seinen anfänglich als Kitschliteratur verschrieenen Romanen durchbrach er die Grenzen zwischen sogenannter »hoher« und »niederer« Literatur. Weltweiten Ruhm erlangte Manuel Puig mit der Verfilmung seines Romans El beso de la mujer araña (1976, dt. Der Kuß der Spinnenfrau, 1979) durch den Regisseur Héctor Babenco, 1985. Eine Bearbeitung für die Bühne hatte Puig bereits 1981 vorgenommen. Von der argentinischen Militärregierung wurde das Buch verboten, woraufhin Puig seine Heimat endgültig verließ. Er zog nach Mexiko, lebte einige Jahre in New York und Rio de Janeiro, wo er den Roman Sangue de amor correspondido (1982, dt. Herzblut erwiderter Liebe, 2000) auf Portugiesisch schrieb, und kehrte ein Jahr vor seinem frühen Tod im Jahre 1990 nach Mexiko zurück. Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, geboren 1943 in Posen (Polen), studierte Portugiesisch und Französisch in Mainz und Lissabon. Seit 1978 arbeitet sie – nach einer Tätigkeit als Fremdsprachenkorrespondentin – als freie Übersetzerin und erhielt zahlreiche Übersetzerpreise. Nach längeren Aufenthalten in Brasilien, Schweden, Frankreich und Portugal lebt Karin von Schweder-Schreiner heute in Hamburg.

Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) is a subtropical evergreen fruit tree indigenous to China. Records show it has been cultivated in China for over 2000 years. From this beginning, loquat has spread to more than 30 countries around the world. Grown in various regions of Asia, the Mediterranean and across the Americas, loquats suit both temperate and subtropical areas, sharing the same environmental conditions as citrus. Loquat is an increasingly commercial crop in some Asian and European countries with a good amount of international trade. Recent research has focused on improving crop yields and quality. Over 100 different varieties have been developed to meet both growers' and consumers' demands. These developments have contributed to a better understanding of the crop environment, plant growth and physiology of tree and fruit development with implications for both breeding and cultivation. This book is to be the first to provide a comprehensive coverage of the history, physiology, culture and marketing of loquat throughout the world.
