Ihre Texte dokumentieren das naturphilosophische und metaphysische Umfeld, in dem Whiteheads Spätphilosophie entstanden ist, und zeigen, daß sie alles andere als das obskure Produkt eines denkerischen Einzelgängers, sondern Teil einer größeren metaphysischen Strömung ist. Auszüge aus frühen Arbeiten Whiteheads zur Ausdehnungslehre belegen die Kontinuität seines Denkens von seinen Arbeiten als Mathematiker bis zu dem in der Forschung noch weitgehend unerschlossenen vierten Teil seines Hauptwerks. Im zweiten Band werden bisher unveröffentlichte Briefe über Whiteheads Philosophie von namhaften Philosophen seiner Zeit wiedergegeben und die unmittelbaren Vorarbeiten zu den Gifford Lectures, die dem Text von »Prozeß und Realität« zugrunde liegen, dokumentiert. Neuere Deutungen zum Verhältnis der Whiteheadschen Metaphysik zur Philosophie seiner Zeit werten das im ersten Band präsentierte Textmaterial aus und ergänzen es.
