        Beach Glass

        by Suzan Colón

Finding love means taking risks, letting go, and believing in second chances . . . A devastating break-up— Yes, I’m ready to be your wife after five years together. I’m ready to marry you, to do laundry together, to have kids with you and wake up in the middle of the night when they cry, and try to find time for sex, and laugh about it when we can’t. I’m ready for all of it, Daniel. Katy McNamara is ready, but Daniel, her devoted but commitment-wary boyfriend, isn’t. When her thirtieth birthday comes and goes without a marriage proposal, she leaves the dull safety of an east coast freelance job for an assignment in Costa Rica, hoping the distraction of writing about yoga and surfing in a tropical paradise will help her heal. Enter Carson Richardson—tanned, tall, and handsome, a world-class surfer who also happens to be smart, wealthy, and a very nice guy. A breathtaking new love— Carson the surf god teaches me how to ride the waves. Carson sits with me on a surfboard, and we kiss as the sun sets behind us. Carson looks on with approval as I send a postcard home with one sentence that reads: I’m not coming back. Loving Carson opens a world of adventure for Katy, though the dangers of his sport always lurk at the edges of their happiness. If the unthinkable happens, will the fantasy be enough? Falling in love means trusting, hoping, sharing—and learning to live for today. Falling in love means realizing that life is as fragile and as beautiful as beach glass. Suzan Colón is the author of young adult novels based on the TV series Smallville. Suzan has contributed to O, the Oprah Magazine, Good Housekeeping, and many other publications. She has been practicing yoga for nearly twenty-five years, is a twice-certified yoga instructor, and has taught at the world-renowned Integral Yoga Institute in New York City. by Miguel Ruiz Montañez

Álvaro, an expert historian in the life of Christopher Columbus, has been retired for years since he married a marquise, turned into a Sevillian young man. But his world collapses when his wife suddenly asks for a divorce. Ruined and cornered in an old ramshackle house, he refuses to give up and decides to fight for the woman he loves, who now lives with a Mexican millionaire. To get it back, he undertakes a risky strategy on TV sets, participating in programs from the heart. When everything collapses around him, he finds a portrait of Columbus (whose true face is still unknown to this day), who appears by accident under a false painting in a box in the attic. This great discovery will allow him to resume his career as a researcher from the top and, also, with world notoriety, a new opportunity to win back his wife, the Marquise. Everything gets complicated when the statue of the Discoverer is blown up in Columbus Circle, in New York, during the official presentation of the portrait. Álvaro will be hopelessly dragged into a spiral of events, forced to start a desperate race to regain his honor and be able to save his life ...

THE LOONY BIN ON THE HILL

        by SUZANA TRATNIK

NOMINATED FOR THE KRESNIK AWARD IN 2019 (FOR THE BEST NOVEL IN SLOVENIA). THE LOONY HOUSE ON THE HILL (Norhaus na hribu) “Oh, believe me, this woman, who is still so young, did all this. She killed someone, disposed of the body and concealed it all.” This sentence in the introduction to the novel surprises us, but still does not prepare us for what follows. The main character, Ariana, whose mother disappeared when Ariana was still very little, lives in a tense, conflictive relationship with her aunt, in the remote village of Privežice. The place which, as noted by the merciless observer and commentator Ariana, appeared around the madhouse on the hill at the end of the paved road, where one of the inmates was her grandmother. What happens is not a typical love story or a typical story about getting to know oneself, although it talks precisely about this. What distinguishes this novel above all else is the lively, flowing dialogue, and the uncompromising, direct aesthetics (sometimes involving ugliness or at least uncouthness or lack of political correctness), which grabs us and takes us on a crazy adventure.

        De wereld vanuit een luchtballon

        by Robert Verhoogt

The invention of the hot air balloon in 1783 caused a sensation which would last for more than a century. The great aeronaut Jean-Pierre Blanchard and his fellow pioneers were followed by many others, whose lift-off attracted masses of people again and again. The subsequent “balloon mania” created a new element in cultural history: the third dimension, reflected in the literary and visual arts as well as in high culture and popular imagination. Scenes from a Balloon skilfully endeavours to reconstruct the sensation the balloon caused in cultural history of the late eighteenth and nineteenth century in Europe and the United States. After Thomas Baldwin produced the first image from a balloon in 1785, reproduction of remarkable prints, paintings, and photographs gained widespread popularity. Balloons inspired well-known photographers and artists, including Nadar, Spelterini, Goya, Manet, Daumier, and Redon, but they also led to a wealth of arts & crafts and popular souvenirs. The adventures of Blanchard, Nadar and other balloonists were a source of inspiration for popular writers like Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, and Mark Twain.
