Rice, a tale of desire, agony, existence and destruction, is a novel Su Tong wrote in the early 1990s. It depicts the samsara-like life of a man who migrated to the city by train to run away from famine and who eventually returns to his hometown also by train. The wandering life in a strange place is the basic generalization of his life and his death on the way home marks the climax of the whole story. Rice is the most noteworthy one among the few novels Su Tong has written so far.

Ireland and the Renaissance court is an interdisciplinary collection of essays exploring Irish and English courts, courtiers and politics in the early modern period, c. 1450-1650. Chapters are contributed by both established and emergent scholars working in the fields of history, literary studies, and philology. They focus on Gaelic cúirteanna, the indigenous centres of aristocratic life throughout the medieval period; on the regnal court of the emergent British empire based in London at Whitehall; and on Irish participation in the wider world of European elite life and letters. Collectively, they expand the chronological limits of 'early modern' Ireland to include the fifteenth century and recreate its multi-lingual character through exploration of its English, Irish and Latin archives. This volume is an innovative effort at moving beyond binary approaches to English-Irish history by demonstrating points of contact as well as contention.

Es ist der Versuch angesichts der Shoah, »in diesem Augenblick einer Weltkatastrophe«, die Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes aus dem Buch Hiob zu erklären, seinem Hadern mit Gott, seinem Fragen nach Gerechtigkeit. ln einzelnen Abschnitten über den Ursprung, die Schuld, die Verfolgung, den Zionismus, die Hoffnung deutet sie das Buch Hiob neu. Die überlieferte biblische Geschichte erweist sich als unvermindert gegenwärtig. »Jude sein heißt, sich entscheiden«, heißt es am Beginn lakonisch, und im Fortgang entfaltet Margarete Susman Grenzen und Möglichkeiten einer solchen Entscheidung. Margarete Susmans Das Buch Hiob und das Schicksal des jüdischen Volkes ist heute weithin vergessen. Ihr Beharren auf einer religiösen Substanz in Formen des alltäglichen Zusammenlebens, in der Dichtung wie Philosophie mutet fremd an. Doch es ist eine Fremdheit, mit der vertraut zu machen sich lohnt. Ihre Hiobdeutung, die sie zuerst 1929 in einem Aufsatz über Franz Kafka vorbrachte, hat Martin Buber, Walter Benjamin, Gershom Scholem und Paul Celan beeinflußt. »Es gibt«, schreibt Margarete Susman, »keine große Leistung des Judentums im Exil bis in die späte Dichtung Kafkas hinein, die den Prozeßpartner nicht mehr mit Namen nennt, die nicht im Kern eine Theodizee, der Versuch einer Rechtfertigung Gottes vor seinem Volk oder eine Rechtfertigung des Volkes vor Gott wäre. Die ganze große nachbiblische Überlieferung kreist letztlich um diese Frage.«

Alexander Mitscherlich, geboren am 20. September 1908 in München, gehört zu den großen kritischen Gelehrten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Von 1960 bis 1976 leitete der Mediziner und Psychoanalytiker das von ihm gegründete Sigmund-Freud-Institut in Frankfurt am Main. Seine Bücher Auf dem Weg zur vaterlosen Gesellschaft (1963), Krankheit als Konflikt (1966) und Die Unfähigkeit zu trauern (zusammen mit Margarete Mitscherlich-Nielsen, 1967) lösten tiefgreifende Diskussionen aus. 1969 erhielt Alexander Mitscherlich den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels. Alexander Mitscherlich starb am 26. Juni 1982 in Frankfurt am Main. Im Suhrkamp Verlag erschienen seine Gesammelten Schriften.

Von 1945 bis 1948 setze er sein Medizinstudium fort, nach dem Absolutorium erwarb Lem jedoch nicht den Doktorgrad und übte den Arztberuf nicht aus. Er übersetzte Fachliteratur aus dem Russischen und ab den fünfziger Jahren arbeitete Lem als freier Schriftsteller in Krákow. Er wandte sich früh dem Genre Science-fiction zu, schrieb aber auch gewichtige theoretische Abhandlungen und Essays zu Kybernetik, Literaturtheorie und Futurologie. Stanislaw Lem zählt heute zu den erfolgreichsten und meist übersetzten Autoren Polens. Viele seiner Werke wurden verfilmt.

Rice has supported a greater number of people for a longer period of time than any other crop. Nearly half of the global population is dependent on rice as its major staple food. While Asia remains the main centre of production and consumption of rice, the importance of rice is increasing rapidly in Africa and Latin America, and exports of rice from the United States and Australia are of major importance to the world rice trade. This book explores the factors which have contributed to the sustainability of rice production over the eight or nine thousand years for which rice has been produced. Sustainability is defined as the maintenance or improvement of production levels and protection of natural resources, within the context of economic viability and social acceptability. The author covers a wide range of issues, including soil fertility, plant breeding, pest management, irrigation, land degradation and social and economic factors. Greatest emphasis is placed on the special features of wetland rice production, and the importance of the nutrient balance. It is also shown that without the Green Revolution there would have been a period of mass starvation in Asia, a problem which continues to threaten and which will be unavoidable unless the successes of the Green Revolution can be sustained. The book provides a unique review of the sustainability of the production of the world’s most important crop, and should be of interest to students, research workers and policy makers in agriculture, soil science, and agricultural economics and food policies, as well as all interested in development in the third world.

Less than two decades ago, the world was focusing on the impending food crisis across Asia, which was given little hope of ever being able to meet its rapidly growing food demand. Since then, Asia has made a quantum leap in food production. Technological innovations and policies that promoted intensive rice production systems helped achieve this. The authors of this book argue that there is a growing sense of complacency about future food supplies in Asia and that such complacency is not warranted. While rice productivity may increase, this will be limited by a number of factors: withdrawal of land and labor from agriculture to other uses, increased competition for resources, and land degradation. It is unlikely to match the increase in demand for rice because of population growth. The book provides a thorough assessment of the opportunities for increasing land productivity, including crop diversification. It evaluates the successes and limitations of the Green Revolution for rice in Asia and projects economic and technological trends forward over the next three decades.

During the crucial period between the Second Civil War and the establishment of the English Republic, when he served as official pamphleteer of the Parliament and the republican government, Ascham put forward a complex argument in support of Parliament's claims for obedience which drew on the political thought of Grotius, Hobbes, Selden, Filmer and Machiavelli. He combined ideas taken from these authors and turned them into a powerful instrument of propaganda to be deployed in the service of the political agenda of his Independent patrons in Parliament. This book mainly introduces the origin of the She ethnic group's Black Rice Festival. While areas of the She ethnic group suffered from pests, the land owners increased rents and fees. As a result, the She people were in shortage of food. Lan Tianfeng led people to the land owner's house to steal food. After being found out, Lan Tianfeng stepped forward to protect others and was imprisoned on March 3rd. There was no food in the prison for him. Later, some She people used black rice leaves to cook rice. The jailers did not dare to eat the black rice and passed the rice to Tianfeng. Over time, Lan Tianfeng slowly recovered. Three years later, again on March 3rd, Lan Tianfeng was rescued. In order for future generations to commemorate the feat of Lan Tianfeng and remember how hard to have rice, the Black Rice Festival is celebrated every year.
