Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. Daran und an vieles mehr erinnert sich Hans Mayer in diesem Buch. Daß Willy Brandt zu den wichtigsten Bewegern des 20. Jahrhunderts gehörte. Daß er eine der großen Gestalten des deutschen öffentlichen Lebens nach 1945 gewesen ist: Regierender Bürgermeister von Berlin, Außenminister, Bundeskanzler, Friedensnobelpreisträger. Es ist eine bemerkenswerte Lebensgeschichte, die der Autor hier parallel zu seiner eigenen beschreibt: Hans Mayer ist Jahrgang 1907, Willy Brandt Jahrgang 1913. Der eine tritt der Sozialistischen Arbeiterpartei Deutschlands (SAPD) in Köln, der andere dem SJV (Sozialistischen Jugendverband) in Lübeck bei, beide linke Abweichler, beide Dissidenten, die sie bleiben sollten.Wer war Willy Brandt wirklich? Wer waren seine Wegbegleiter, wer – neben Herbert Wehner – seine großen Gegner, und was veranlaßte ihn 1974 anläßlich der im Grunde harmlosen Affäre um Günter Guillaume auf dem Höhepunkt seiner politischen Karriere zum Rücktritt? Beginnend mit Brandts Kindheit, zeichnet Hans Mayer den Lebensweg Brandts über das Exil in Norwegen bis hin zur beispiellosen Karriere eines Politikers nach, dessen grundlegendes Ziel die Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten war.

Peter Huchel (1903-1981), einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Lyriker nach 1945. Lange Jahre Chefredakteur der Zeitschrift »Sinn und Form«, 1962 aus ideologischen Gründen zum Rücktritt gezwungen, durfte er nach weiterhin anhaltenden Auseinandersetzungen mit dem DDR-Regime 1971 ausreisen. Der Wissenschaftler, Kulturkritiker und Schriftsteller wurde am 19. März 1907 in Köln geboren. Er studierte Jura, Geschichte und Philosophie in Köln, Bonn und Berlin. Als Jude verfolgt, war er von 1933 bis 1945 in der Emigration in Frankreich und in der Schweiz. Von 1948 bis 1963 lehrte er Geschichte der Nationalliteraturen an der Universität Leipzig. Zwischen 1965 und 1973 war er Professor für Deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Technischen Universität Hannover. Danach lebte er als Honorarprofessor in Tübingen. 1935, im Exil, begann er mit den Vorarbeiten für sein großes Werk über Georg Büchner; ohne Zuspruch von Carl J. Burckhardt wäre das Opus magnum nicht beendet worden. 1972 erschien eine Neuausgabe im Suhrkamp Verlag. 40 Titel von ihm sind seitdem in »seinem« Verlag publiziert worden, darunter Bücher über Goethe und Brecht, Thomas Mann und Richard Wagner; der letzte in diesen Tagen: »Erinnerungen an Willy Brandt«. Bundeskanzler Schröder drückte darüber brieflich noch seine Hochachtung aus. Hans Mayer war ein Lehrer für uns Deutsche. Ein Wissenschaftler, der mitten im Stalinismus Autoren wie Kafka, Proust, Joyce und Bloch verteidigte, der, wo immer in der Welt er lehrte, Literatur befragte, ob sie geeignet sei, Humanität zu befördern. Ein Gelehrter zwischen den Fronten, dessen wichtigste Werke nicht zufällig den Unbotmäßigen und »Außenseitern« gelten. Seine Erinnerungen waren Erinnerungen eines »Deutschen auf Widerruf«. Die Beschwörungen eines anderen Deutschland bereiteten neuen Kräften wie Uwe Johnson den Weg. Hans Mayer ist Ehrenbürger der Städte Köln und Leipzig, Ehrendoktor der Universitäten in Brüssel, Wisconsin und Leipzig, Ehrenprofessor der Universität Peking, Träger des »Großen Verdienstkreuzes mit Stern und Schulterband der Bundesrepublik Deutschland«. Hans Mayer, Nestor der deutschen Literaturwissenschaft, starb am Sonnabend, dem 19. Mai 2001, im Alter von 94 Jahren in Tübingen.

The souls of white folk examines settlers not as caricatures, but as people inhabiting a unique historical moment. It takes seriously - though not uncritically - what settlers said, how they viewed themselves and their world. It argues that the settler soul was composed of a series of interlaced ideas: settlers equated civilisation with a (hard to define) whiteness; they were emotionally enriched through claims to paternalism and trusteeship over Africans; they felt themselves constantly threatened by Africans, by the state, and by the moral failures of other settlers; and they daily enacted their claims to supremacy through rituals of prestige, deference, humiliation and violence. The souls of white folk will appeal to those interested in the histories of Africa, colonialism, and race, and can be appreciated by scholars and students alike.
