        Am Ende der so genannten Kriege »gegen der Terror« entstanden in Irak und Afghanistan weder friedliche noch sichere Staaten, die Gewalt setzte sich in Form von Terroranschlägen und Gewaltexzessen fort – bis heute. Die Opfer der brutalen Übergriffe sind zumeist Zivilisten – Kinder, Frauen, Männer. Dieses Buch will die Spirale der Gewalt durchbrechen. Geschrieben wurde es von einem US-Offizier und einer Friedensforscherin, die sich Anfang des letzten Jahrzehnts bei der Arbeit an neuen Sicherheitskonzepten kennenlernten. Beide hatten schon in den 90er Jahren Erfahrungen in den Jugoslawienkriegen gesammelt und waren überzeugt davon, dass nur ein Dialog zwischen Militär und Friedensforschung für Sicherheit und Frieden im 21. Jahrhundert sorgen könne. Das Ergebnis ihres Dialogs ist dieses Buch. Seine Leitidee ist, dass der Einsatz herkömmlicher Streitkräfte die Kriege und Krisen des 21. Jahrhunderts nicht lösen kann, sie im Gegenteil nur verschärft. Beebes und Kaldors nachhaltiges Programm der Friedenssicherung und -schaffung – »Human Security« – setzt dabei nicht nur auf akute Befriedungen in Kriegsgebieten, sondern auch auf präventive Maßnahmen. Das Buch ist ein Aufschrei gegen die Gewalt und bietet konkrete Maßnahmen an für eine friedliche und sichere Welt im 21. Jahrhundert.

        Art as worldmaking is a response to Alex Potts's provocative 2013 book Experiments in modern realism. Twenty essays by leading scholars test Potts's recasting of realism through examinations of art produced in different media and periods, ranging from eighth-century Chinese garden aesthetics to video work by the contemporary Russian collective Radek Community. While the book does not neglect avatars of pictorial realism such as Menzel and Eakins, or the question of nineteenth-century realism's historical antecedents, it is contemporary in orientation in that many contributors are particularly concerned with the questions that sculpture, photography and non-traditional media pose for realism as an aesthetic norm. It will be essential reading for students of art history concerned with art's truth value or more broadly with conceptual problems of representation and the intersections of art and politics.

        Die »Einführung in die Kybernetik« ist eines der Standardwerke der jungen Wissenschaft Kybernetik, nicht zuletzt durch des Autors didaktisches Geschick der Grundlagenvermittlung. Ashby vermeidet es, für den Laien unnötig verwirrende Bereiche der Elektronik und der höheren Mathematik in seine Einführung einzubeziehen und verwendet satt dessen allgemeinverständliche Beispiele aus dem Alltag. Im ersten Teil geht es um Systeme im allgemeinen, um ihre schematische Darstellung durch Transformation, um Stabilität, Unabhängigkeit und Rückkoppelung. Im zweiten Teil des Buches befaßt sich Ashby mit »Information« im Zusammenhang mit der grundlegenden Theorie Shannons. Zur Erläuterung von Information und Codierung etc. werden zahlreiche Beispiele aus dem Bereich biologischer Forschung herangezogen. Der dritte Teil zeigt Verwendungsmöglichkeiten von Mechanismen und Information für die Regelung und Kontrolle von Systemen. Dabei geht es ebenso um natürliche Systeme (wie das menschliche Hirn), die Gegenstand der Physiologie sind, wie auch um künstliche, das heißt um die Konstruktion von Maschinen, die in ihrer Funktion der des Hirns vergleichbar sind.

It covers celebrated and lesser-known artists from the 1970s to today, including Marina Abramovic, Sanja Ivekovic, Vlasta Delimar, Tanja Ostojic, Selma Selman and Helena Janecic, along with music legends Lepa Brena and Esma Redzepova. "I am Jugoslovenka" tells a unique story of women's resistance through the intersection of feminism, socialism and nationalism in East European visual culture.
