Jeder hat von Charles Darwin gehört, und fast jeder von seiner bahnbrechenden Evolutionstheorie. Volker Mosbrugger und Hans Traxler sind dem Lebensweg Darwins und dem Weg seines Werks gefolgt. Sein bedeutendes Buch »Über die Entstehung der Arten«, das 1859 erstmals erschien, hat ihn weltberühmt gemacht, aber es hat ihm auch Feinde eingebracht, denn sowohl seine Abstammungslehre als auch die Vorstellung, daß im »Kampf ums Dasein« nur die Tüchtigeren überleben, ist von Anfang an bis heute immer wieder angefeindet worden. Geboren wurde Darwin in einem englischen Landstädtchen, sein Interesse an der Natur und den Naturwissenschaften, insbesondere an der Biologie, war schon von Kindheit an groß. Er interessierte sich für die Gesteine, sammelte gerne Käfer, und 1831 brach er zu einer fünfjährigen Expedition mit dem berühmten Schiff, das den Namen Beagle trug, zu einer Reise um die Welt auf. Er besuchte Patagonien und Feuerland und die Galapagosinseln, wo er Vögel beobachtete, was ihn zu seiner Theorie anregte, und von wo er eine Schildkröte mitbrachte, die im Alter von 176 Jahren erst vor kurzem gestorben ist. Darwin selbst starb im Alter von 73 Jahren und wurde in der Westminster Abbey bestattet. Im Jahr 2000 wurde sein Bild auf die britische 10-Pfund-Note gedruckt, weil angeblich sein Bart nur schwer zu fälschen sei.

Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his 'best and truest friend'. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father-daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. Georgina's refusal to leave Dickens and his desire for her to remain in his household led to rumours of an affair and even illegitimate children. He left her the equivalent of almost £1 million and all his personal papers in his will. Georgina's commitment to Dickens was unwavering but it is far from clear what he did to deserve such loyalty. There were several occasions when he misused her in order to protect his public reputation. Why did Georgina betray her once much-loved sister? Why did she fall out with her family and risk her reputation in order to stay with Dickens? And why did the Dickenses' daughter Katey say it was 'the greatest mistake ever' to invite a sister-in-law to live with a family?

Postmodern, postcolonial and post-truth are broadly used terms. But where do they come from? When and why did the habit of interpreting the world in post-terms emerge? And who exactly were the 'post boys' responsible for this? Post-everything examines why post-Christian, post-industrial and post-bourgeois were terms that resonated, not only among academics, but also in the popular press. It delves into the historical roots of postmodern and poststructuralist, while also subjecting more recent post-constructions (posthumanist, postfeminist) to critical scrutiny. This study is the first to offer a comprehensive history of post-concepts. The uncanny forms of novelistic characterization

Drawing on the recent ontological turn in critical theory, Spectral Dickens explores an aspect of literary character that is neither real nor fictional, but spectral. This work thus provides an in-depth study of the inimitable characters populating Dickens' illustrated novels using three hauntological concepts: the Freudian uncanny, Derridean spectrality, and the Lacanian real. Thus, while the current discourse on character studies, which revolves around values like realism, depth, and lifelikeness, tends to see characters as mimetic of persons, this book invents new critical concepts to account for non-mimetic forms of characterization. These spectral forms bring to light the important influence of developments in nineteenth-century visual culture, such as the lithography and caricature of Daumier and J.J. Grandville. The spectrality of novelistic characters developed here paves the way for a new understanding of fictional characters in general.

Evolution, Intelligent Design und die Zukunft des Glaubens

Als Charles Darwin im Jahr 1882 starb, sollte er auf Wunsch der Familie auf dem Friedhof jenes kleinen Dorfes in Kent beigesetzt werden, in dem er fast sein halbes Leben verbracht hatte. Daraus wurde nichts. Eine öffentliche Kampagne mit ausdrücklicher Unterstützung der anglikanischen Kirche führte dazu, daß der Begründer der Evolutionstheorie ein Staatsbegräbnis erhielt und seine letzte Ruhestätte in der Westminster Abbey fand – direkt neben dem Grabmal Isaac Newtons. Der Frieden zwischen der Kirche und Darwin war allerdings nur von kurzer Dauer. Heute, 150 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung von On the Origin of Species, ist der Kampf um die Evolutionstheorie wieder neu entbrannt und Darwins »gefährliche Idee« steht insbesondere für Vertreter der christlichen Schöpfungslehre und ihrer wissenschaftlichen Spielart, der sogenannten Intelligent-Design-Theorie, zur Disposition. Der Wissenschaftsphilosoph Philip Kitcher zeichnet die Geschichte dieser Auseinandersetzung nach, die auf zunächst ungelöste Spannungen in Darwins Theorie selbst zurückgeht. Er zeigt, daß viele Argumente, die heute von Kreationisten vorgetragen werden, bereits zu Darwins Zeiten, ja sogar von Darwin selbst erwogen und verworfen wurden. Intelligent Design, so Kitcher, ist daher keine Pseudowissenschaft, sondern eine tote Wissenschaft, die längst geklärte Fragen erneut aufwirft. Und der Streit um Darwin ist in Wahrheit nur eine Facette eines viel umfassenderen Clashs zwischen religiösem Glauben und wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen. Kitcher präsentiert eine vehemente Verteidigung der Evolutionstheorie, ohne dabei die sinnstiftende Funktion der Religion gerade in Zeiten sozialer Unsicherheit herunterzuspielen. Sinnfragen sind wesentlich soziale Fragen. Erst wenn diese beantwortet sind, so sein Fazit, können wir den Glauben an das Übernatürliche aufgeben – und endlich mit Darwin leben.
