Wolf Singer ist einer der weltweit führenden Hirnforscher. Matthieu Ricard war Molekularbiologe, wurde dann buddhistischer Mönch – und Bestsellerautor. Für dieses Buch treten beide in einen Dialog über die Beziehung zwischen Hirnforschung und Bewußtseinstraining. Sie sprechen darüber, welche mentalen Zustände mit meditativen Praktiken herbeigeführt werden sollen, welche neuronalen Vorgänge diesen zugrunde liegen, und sie fragen, ob regelmäßiges Meditieren zu nachweisbaren Veränderungen von Hirnfunktionen führt. Ihr Buch leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu, den Austausch zwischen Naturwissenschaften und den kontemplativen Wissenschaften anzuregen, denn Buddhismus wird hier als eine "Wissenschaft über den Geist" verhandelt und nicht als eine Religion. Ein Thema, das in der Diskussion zentral behandelt wird, sind die Methoden, mit denen der Geist und menschliche Werte trainiert werden können, zum Beispiel Aufmerksamkeit, Altruismus, emotionale Ausgeglichenheit und Glück. Darüber hinaus sprechen Singer und Ricard über die Langzeitwirkungen solchen Trainings. Die Fähigkeit des Gehirns, sich an veränderte Umstände anzupassen, wird meist im Kontext sich verändernder Außenbedingungen untersucht, aber bei der Meditation kommen die Impulse von innen und sollen eine systematische Veränderung der eigenen mentalen Dispositionen bewirken, und folgerichtig wird die Frage gestellt, ob sich zentrale Fragen über die menschliche Natur überhaupt mit neurowissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen verbinden lassen.

New dimensions, new challenges

In the current European dilemma as to whether to increase diversity policies or move towards an assimilationist policy, it is difficult to know what the Spanish approach is. This book argues that Spain represents a context of "multiple diversity", where two frameworks interact: an old, unresolved one, arising from democratic transition, and a new one due to immigration. This explains the Spanish practical approach, where the recent past plays the role of an iron cage, limiting institutional innovation and change. The author proposes a heuristic model, to better understand the "Spanish laboratory of diversities". In order to go through these steps, the author analyses three case studies, coming from the political/social agenda: education, workplace, and political rights. At the end, the reader will have an empirically informed and theoretically founded overview on how Spain is managing diversity. This book is timely for a wide range of academic and professional readers. ;

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-organ autoimmune disease with complex multifactorial pathogenesis and progression. In contrast to the revolution of the immunosuppressive armamentarium in other systemic autoimmune diseases, the therapeutic tools used in SLE have so far been limited, and most drugs are well established and have been used for some time, albeit in new combinations and dosages. However, this scenario is changing as new biological agents are becoming available or showing promise in the pipeline. The authors of this six-chapter book have come together to address a variety of innovative approaches for the treatment of SLE, which are either already available or under active validation. The initial chapter provides a scene-setting overview of the immunopathogenesis of SLE and drug targets in this complex disease. Subsequent chapters address new therapeutic options: rituximab, belimumab, epratuzumab and intravenous immunoglobulins. The closing chapter covers other novel immunotherapeutic agents that are in the pipeline and future directions for the management of this difficult autoimmune disease.

The ArtsBook of the Hunt

Written between 1387 and 1389 by Gastone of Foix, the Book of the Hunt is one of the most interesting testimonies of the cultural history of this time. The four parts of the manuscript show the naturalistic knowledge at the end of the 14thcentury, based on the direct observation of the natural world. It was used as a manual of natural history up until the 19th century. The text is complemented by 87 miniatures in large format, executed by the Master of the Bedford Hours, as well as by a great number of illuminated initial letters and floral decorations that make the pages of the manuscript one of the masterworks of French miniature. The style of the miniatures is very particular, related to those of contemporary tapestries: the horizon of the scene is kept high, thus creating an ample space for the characters; the flora is described with a singular effect of relief, obtained by juxtaposing different tonalities of colour.
