SAVING CRITICALLY ENDANGERED LARGE MAMMALS OF WEST MALAYSIA

by Mohd Momin Khan, Shamsul Ismin Tumin

In 1958, the then Game Department in the state of Perak were responsible for protecting wildlife and answering calls for assistance to protect crops, property and lives threatened by these animals. It was a time of plenty, with forest cover of more than 75 percent.   Unfortunately, those forests were rapidly being cleared, causing wildlife species to become homeless. Moreover, solving problems often resulted in the killings of these animals. Hunting licenses were introduced, accounting for large numbers of sambar and barking deer being killed. This slaughter continued for decades, leading to a decline in the numbers of several large animal species. Due to rampant hunting, poaching, and the loss of about 30 percent of the forest species that were once common are now in dire need of saving from further decline. The need to step up conservation efforts has reached an alarming level, requiring prompt action to ensure population recovery.

        Elephant Tourism in Nepal

Historical Perspectives, Current Health and Welfare Challenges, and Future Directions

        by Michelle Szydlowski

A study of elephant tourism in Nepal from its origins in the 1960s to present day, this book examines the ways in which captive elephants face challenges as they navigate life in Nepalese elephant stables, or hattisars. Used as human conveyance, government anti-poaching patrol team members and rescue vehicles, these elephants work with and for humans. The health and welfare of captive tourism elephants is vital to the conservation of wild individuals, and this book offers an assessment of elephant needs and their existing welfare statuses. Numerous NGOS and INGOs are active in the lives of these animals and numerous elephant advocacy organizations have arisen with the goal of changing the riding culture and improving the lives of captive elephants. This book seeks to examine the motivations of these NGOs and INGOs, along with their ethical approaches to elephant health and welfare. Are the motivations of these organizations similar enough to work together towards a common goal? Or are their ethical norms so different that they will get in the way of each other? Using ordinary language and an ethics theoretical framework, this text aims to identify the norms across cultures and organisations and reframe them in ways which allow those organizations to create more successful outcomes.

      • Poachers Were My Prey

Eighteen Years as an Undercover Wildlife Officer

by R. T. Stewart (author), Chip Gross (author)

Winner of the Outdoor Writers Association of America 2013 Excellence in Craft Award[tab:Description]“You ain’t no damn game warden, are ya?” the poacher snarled. I looked him straight in the eye and lied. “Game warden . . . ? I ain’t no game warden!” The poacher paused, mulling over my answer, and added quietly, “Then why you askin’ so many questions?”Thus begins the story of R. T. Stewart’s career as an undercover wildlife law enforcement officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. For nearly two decades, Stewart infiltrated poaching rings throughout Ohio, the Midwest, and beyond. Poachers Were My Prey chronicles his many exciting undercover adventures, detailing the techniques he used in putting poachers behind bars. It also reveals, for the first time, the secrets employed by undercover wildlife officers in catching the bad guys.Poaching—the illegal taking of wild game—goes on every day in the United States and throughout the world. Millions of dollars change hands annually from the illegal sale or trade of antlers, hides, horns, meat, feathers, fur, teeth, claws, gall bladders, and other wild-animal parts. As a result, wildlife populations suffer— including endangered and threatened species—and legitimate, law-abiding sport hunters get a bad reputation. R. T. Stewart dedicated his professional career to stopping such slaughter by actually living with poachers for months or even years. “In essence, being an undercover officer involves living a lie,” quips Stewart. “You’re always pretending to be someone you’re not.”Undercover law enforcement is dangerous work and, as a result, extremely stressful. Stewart recalls one particular case during which he realized he was too deeply undercover and came close to forgetting his real identity. Many undercover officers have crossed the line to become the very person they initially swore to stop. In Poachers Were My Prey, readers look over R. T. Stewart’s shoulder as he deals with the temptations offered to an undercover officer, including money, sex, and drugs, and watch as he gets the job done and brings the poachers to justice.

        by Jennifer Craig

Yes Sister, No Sister: Ny Life as a Trainee Nurse in 1950s Yorkshire tells the story of a naïve, idealistic eighteen-year old who starts nurse training in 1952 at Leeds General Infirmary.  Two themes run through the book:  The first theme is the camaraderie among the student nurses who support each other, tell each other jokes and cope with their experiences by using typical Yorkshire humour.  Their antics often elicit Matron’s ire.  “Memo from Matron's Office: It has come to my attention that night staff are poaching eggs in sterilizers.  This practice must cease forthwith.  Only instruments and bowls are to be boiled in sterilizers.”  The second theme is the influence of the Sisters, who, for good or bad, control the lives of student nurses.  “The Sister on the ward is known as the Dragon.  One look at that frozen face and I know I am in for trouble.”  Nurse Ross grows from an innocent teenager into a professional nurse.  During a period of disillusionment, she realises that the patients are her whole reason for enduring the hard, difficult work and she continues her training with renewed enthusiasm.   Throughout her training, Nurse Ross dreams of becoming a Ward Sister so that she can effect some changes in routine and procedure and thus relieve her frustration with the system.  She fulfils this ambition but finds that changing the system brings not only joy but also recriminations.  The story ends when she decides to immigrate to Canada.
