Sexually Transmitted Infections and AIDS in the Tropics

by Edited by Om P Arya, Charles A Hart

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are a major public health problem both in their own right and because of their link with HIV infection. This has elevated their control to an absolute priority throughout the world. In developing countries, which account for approximately 75% of the easily curable STI, as estimated by the WHO, and where sexually transmitted HIV infection has reached epidemic proportions, the need is most acute. Here AIDS is claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In addition, because of inadequate resources, the sequelae of STI (e.g. infertility and some cancers) contribute greatly to ill-health in the tropics. This book written by acknowledged experts working or with experience in tropical countries, gives clear, concise and up to date knowledge and understanding on all aspects of Sexually Transmitted Infections. It should be useful for all those involved in the appropriate management and control of STI in various settings, ranging from peripheral and rural and urban health care centres to large hospitals. It will also be invaluable for students of tropical medicine, medical microbiology and genito-urinary medicine.

        Forest Hydrology

        Processes, Management and Assessment

by Devendra Amatya, Thomas Williams, Leon Bren, Carmen de Jong

Forests cover approximately 26% of the world's land surface area and represent a distinct biotic community. They interact with water and soil in a variety of ways, providing canopy surfaces which trap precipitation and allow evaporation back into the atmosphere, thus regulating how much water reaches the forest floor as through fall, as well as pull water from the soil for transpiration. The discipline "forest hydrology" has been developed throughout the 20th century. During that time human intervention in natural landscapes has increased, and land use and management practices have intensified. This book: - Presents cutting edge thinking and assessments in forest hydrology across all latitudes and terrains, including state-of-the-art modelling techniques and methodologies - Describes the latest challenges facing forest hydrology, such as increased occurrence of disturbance, due to extreme floods, drought, disease, and fire, potentially caused by climate change - Is written by an internationally renowned team of scientists, engineers, and managers to give a well-rounded review of the subject The book will be useful for graduate students, professionals, land managers, practitioners, and researchers with a good understanding of the basic principles of hydrology and hydrologic processes. ; This book presents cutting edge thinking and assessments in forest hydrology across all latitudes and terrains, including state-of-the-art modelling techniques and methodologies. by Suresh Chandra, Samsher, Suneel Kumar Goyal & Durvesh Kumari

In any agricultural country, various types of agricultural commodities are produced in large quantities and to handle such quantities during harvest, post-harvest, processing and transportation, various types of equipment are required. To design particular equipment or determining the behaviour of the product for its handling, physical properties such as size, shape, surface area, volume, density, porosity are very important. Various types of cleaning, grading and separation equipment are designed on the basis of physical properties of seeds such as size, shape, specific gravity etc. The book will provide a fundamental understanding of engineering properties of agricultural produce and the knowledge of engineering properties are combined with engineering knowledge. Each chapter in the book will be helpful for the students to understand the relationship between engineering properties of raw, semi-finished and processed food to obtain products with desired shelf-life and quality. This book discusses basic definitions, principles of engineering properties and their measurement methods with research findings. It will be helpful to the students for their self-study and to gain information how to analyze experimental data to generate practical information. It will also be helpful for students who deal with engineering properties in their research. Methods to measure these properties are also explained in details.

You Can Count on Your Heart

        by Andrea Maggi

In a small high school in Italy, professor Elpidi’s class mostly includes self-important and disillusioned students, such as Valentina, who is eager to become a famous beauty vlogger; Renzo, a street dancer; Paola, who feels trapped in a life programmed by her parents. All these teenagers have one thing in common: they don't know who they are, so they don't have the slightest idea about what to do in the future. Professor Elpidi tries to explain Socrates’ saying: “Know thyself”, in a completely original way: he organizes a retreat in a remote mountain hut, where they will all live together for a month in close contact with nature. They will have to learn to settle their differences and live in a community without wi-fi, cell phones or any other modern convenience. A book that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, and speaks to young people in their language about their fragility.

        Climate Resilient Animal Agriculture

        by GSLHV Prasada Rao

Animal husbandry is strongly influenced by weather and climate. Climate change/variability imposes multiple stresses in animals and thus vital to understand the impact of environmental stress on livestock production and reproduction. Among the environmental variables affecting livestock, heat stress seems to be one of the more intriguing factors making difficult animal reproduction and production. Information and knowledge on animal responses to the environment continues to be in process, managing livestock to reduce the impact of adverse weather and climate remains a challenge. Responding to the challenges of global warming necessitate a paradigm shift in the practice of agriculture and in the role of livestock within the farming system. The key thematic issues on environment stress and livestock production includes: early warning system, multiple stress research, exploitation of genetic potential of native breeds, suitable breeding programme and nutritional intervention research. Livestock farmers should have key roles in determining what adaptation and mitigation strategies they support if these have to sustain livestock production in changing climate. The integration of new technologies into the research and technology transfer systems potentially offers many opportunities to further the development of climate change adaptation strategies. This publication is therefore a multi-authored attempt to present the scientific fraternity high quality resource material in the field of climate change and livestock production. Attempts were made to discuss the adaptive mechanism that the animal exhibits to counteract the adverse effects of heat stress. In addition to the adaptive mechanisms, several management and feeding practices have also been established as tested methods for reduction of stress effects in livestock. It also highlights the challenges the livestock industry faces in maintaining the delicate balance between animal welfare and production. This book is a comprehensive resource for the researchers, teachers and students to understand stress, stress management and livestock productivity so as to sustain animal production in the Country under projected climate change scenario.
