Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are a major public health problem both in their own right and because of their link with HIV infection. This has elevated their control to an absolute priority throughout the world. In developing countries, which account for approximately 75% of the easily curable STI, as estimated by the WHO, and where sexually transmitted HIV infection has reached epidemic proportions, the need is most acute. Here AIDS is claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. In addition, because of inadequate resources, the sequelae of STI (e.g. infertility and some cancers) contribute greatly to ill-health in the tropics. H. L. A. Hart (1907–1992) war Professor für Allgemeine Rechtslehre in Oxford. Jacob Taubes (1923-1987) war zuletzt Professor für Judaistik und Hermeneutik an der Freien Universität Berlin sowie ständiger Gastdozent an der Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris. Jürgen Habermas wurde am 18. Juni 1929 in Düsseldorf geboren. Von 1949 bis 1954 studierte er in Göttingen, Zürich und Bonn die Fächer Philosophie, Geschichte, Psychologie, Deutsche Literatur und Ökonomie. Er lehrte unter anderem an den Universitäten Heidelberg und Frankfurt am Main sowie der University of California in Berkeley und war Direktor des Max-Planck-Instituts zur Erforschung der Lebensbedingungen der wissenschaftlich-technischen Welt in Starnberg. Jürgen Habermas erhielt zahlreiche Ehrendoktorwürden und Preise, darunter den Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels (2001) und den Kyoto-Preis (2004). Geboren am 5. Januar 1927 in Marburg, studierte Dieter Henrich von 1946 bis 1950 in Marburg, Frankfurt und Heidelberg (u.a. bei Hans-Georg Gadamer) Philosophie. 1950 Dissertation: Die Grundlagen der Wissenschaftslehre Max Webers. Nach der Habilitation 1955/56 Lehrtätigkeiten als ordentlicher Professor in Berlin (ab 1960) und Heidelberg (ab 1965), Gastprofessuren in den USA ( Harvard, Columbia, University of Michigan, Yale); 1981 Berufung an die Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München, Ordinarius für Philosophie bis zur Emeritierung 1994. Seit 1997 Honorarprofessor an der Berliner Humboldt-Universität.

When Tumbledown makes friends with a feisty troop of metal springs, they hatch a plan to save him from himself. They fan out over his wrecking ball and every time it swings they do their best to absorb the shock. The day comes when the worn-out springs turn to the Wise Old Crane for help. Tumbledown can never be a cement mixer, but maybe there are other ways, better suited to his nature. After some search, the Wise Old Crane finds a new job for Tumbledown at a construction site using his wrecking ball to smooth out the cement on the ground. It’s hard work but Tumbledown is finally happy, and he grows stronger and more skillful with every passing day.

Charles Dickens called his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth his 'best and truest friend'. Georgina saw Dickens as much more than a friend. They lived together for twenty-eight years, during which time their relationship constantly changed. The sister of his wife Catherine, the sharp and witty Georgina moved into the Dickens home aged fifteen. What began as a father-daughter relationship blossomed into a genuine rapport, but their easy relations were fractured when Dickens had a mid-life crisis and determined to rid himself of Catherine. Georgina's refusal to leave Dickens and his desire for her to remain in his household led to rumours of an affair and even illegitimate children. He left her the equivalent of almost £1 million and all his personal papers in his will. Georgina's commitment to Dickens was unwavering but it is far from clear what he did to deserve such loyalty. There were several occasions when he misused her in order to protect his public reputation. Why did Georgina betray her once much-loved sister? Why did she fall out with her family and risk her reputation in order to stay with Dickens? And why did the Dickenses' daughter Katey say it was 'the greatest mistake ever' to invite a sister-in-law to live with a family?
