        Muppets in Moskau

        Die völlig verrückte Geschichte, wie die Sesamstraße nach Russland kam

        by Natasha Lance Rogoff, Frank Sievers

        Kurz nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion erwartet Natasha Lance Rogoff die Aufgabe ihres Lebens: Sie soll die ur-amerikanische Sesamstraße für das russische Fernsehen adaptieren. Dass es keine Produktion wie jede andere werden wird, zeigt sich bereits im Vorfeld: Der erste Investor entgeht nur knapp einem Bombenattentat, drei Fernsehmanager werden ermordet, und als endlich ein Produktionsbüro bezogen werden kann, wird es kurz darauf vom Militär besetzt. Schließlich sind da noch die Differenzen im russisch-amerikanischen Team: Filme, in denen Männer den Abwasch machen und Patchwork-Familien fröhliche Buchstabenlieder singen, kommen bei den russischen Kreativen nicht gut an – Schwermut und klassische Musik sollen zum Einsatz kommen. Es wird beherzt gestritten, und nur langsam nähern sich beide Seiten an. Am Ende entstehen aber Kulissen und Handpuppen, Filme und Musik, die amerikanische Vorgaben und russische Tradition verbinden. Die Sendung wird ein Riesenerfolg – bis sie von Putin-treuen Fernsehmanagern abgesetzt wird. Mehr als zehn Jahre lang erreichte die russische Ausgabe der Sesamstraße Millionen von Familien. Die Vision der Sendung: eine neue Realität für die Kinder und Enkelkinder des Landes zu entwerfen – zunächst auf dem Fernsehbildschirm und dann im wirklichen Leben. Natasha Lance Rogoff, die amerikanische Produzentin der Sendung, gibt einen Einblick hinter die Kulissen und erzählt eine turbulente Geschichte von Bombenanschlägen, dem Clash der Kulturen und der zarten Hoffnung, dass es so etwas wie Annäherung zwischen zwei Welten geben kann.

        Cultural Region

        North east England 1945–2000

        by Natasha Vall

        This book is the first historical assessment of English regional cultural policy. With its dialect and striking modern icons such as the Angel of the North, the north east has been described as England's most distinctive region. This study reveals the impact of the new cultural institutions that emerged after 1945 upon a region with deeply rooted vernacular traditions. The creation of the regional arts board and the development of regional broadcasting as well as the national efforts to manage the northern economic problems presented challenges for vernacular culture. In the ensuing battle between provincial and metropolitan values the north east as a modern cultural region took shape. The concluding chapters detail the cultural regeneration of the urban riversides, a much vaunted example of successful culture-led regeneration. This volume is essential for anyone with an interest in the formation of cultural identities, the development of regional government arts policies, urban regeneration and cultural and social history. ;

        Literary and visual Ralegh

        by J. B. Lethbridge

        This collection of essays by scholars from Great Britain, the United States, Canada and Taiwan covers a wide range of topics about Ralegh's diversified career and achievements. Some of the essays shed light on less familiar facets such as Ralegh as a father and as he is represented in paintings, statues, and in movies; others re-examine him as poet, historian, as a controversial figure in Ireland during Elizabeth's reign, and look at his complex relationship with and patronage of Edmund Spenser. A recurrent topic is the Hatfield Manuscript in Ralegh's handwriting, which contains his long, unfinished poem 'The Ocean to Cynthia', usually considered a lament about his rejection by Queen Elizabeth after she learned of his secret marriage to one of her ladies-in-waiting. The book is appropriate for students of Elizabethan-Jacobean history and literature. Among the contributors are well-known scholars of Ralegh and his era, including James Nohrenberg, Anna Beer, Thomas Herron, Alden Vaughan and Andrew Hiscock. ;

        Involução e outros contos para um mundo em crise

        Colectânea de contos traduzidos pelos vencedores do Concurso de Tradução Literária 2020

        by Sandra Tamele

        Neste terceiro volume da Colectânea de Contos Traduzidos pelos vencedores do Concurso de Tradução Literária, apresentamos seis contos publicados entre 2017 e 2019 no âmbito do Caine Prize for African Writing e da colectânea New Short Fiction from Africa: ‘Involução’ da autoria da sul-africana Stacy Hardy que aborda abertamente a sexualidade da mulher, também preocupações sociais e políticas, faz alusão a questões como a degradação ambiental, o colonialismo e direitos da mulher, ancorados numa teatralidade conceptual necessária para que o conto não se torne efémero e engaje o sentido de humor do leitor para o aproximar da mente aberta de Hardy. ‘A heroína misteriosa’ ou ‘Mavbanelo na mayi’ em Bitonga, é da autoria da Tanzaniana Lydia Kasese. Ela escreve sobre as expectativas e pressões sociais que levam as mulheres a desejarem concertar tudo. Neste conto Kasese traz destramente à luz questões sobre o abuso de menores e o seu impacto sobre as famílias na Tanzânia e, não só. Alinafe Malonje estreou-se nesta colectânea da Short Story Day com o conto ‘Manutenção de Rotina’, um registo metafísico de um hotel: parte alegoria, parte meditação com um subtil comentário sobre o que significa ser mulher no Malawi. Natasha Omokhodion-Kalulu Banda cria um fabuloso hotel de fantasia que contém realidades sinistras, construindo um persuasivo mundo alternativo. Tariro Ndoro em ‘A lenda das duas irmãs’, ou ‘Xihitana xa vamakwavu na makwavu’ em Changana, traz uma abordagem arrepiante dos perigos da saudade, onde a busca por uma irmã num hotel de luxo em Victoria Falls tem um fim fantasmagórico. Mampianina Randria nos apresenta em ‘O Gatilho’, ou ‘Niyódeké sê xidúvúlá’ em Changana, um conto com um ritmo cerrado e um desfecho totalmente inesperado onde uma mulher que lida com as frustrações de quem entra na vida adulta.
