        Recovery Stories

Journeys through Adversity, Hope and Awakening

by Kate Jopling (Author), Mitch Winehouse (Foreword writer)

Recovery Stories is a collection of first-hand accounts by people in recovery from or affected by drugs or alcohol. Invaluable for those looking to find new, addiction-free ways to live. It contains insights into the lives of real people who hit ‘rock bottom’ but came back again. Of interest across a wide-range of disciplines, including health, education and social services. Addiction is an illness that kills. Accused of lacking a moral compass and blamed for their own self-destruction, addicts are often forced to live on the margins of society. Afforded little sympathy or support, they may end-up involved in criminality, violence, dishonesty and face despair. They may hit rock bottom when day-to-day survival can become a delicate balance between life and death. But addiction—which occurs in every walk of life—need not be a ‘life sentence’. As this book shows, no-one is beyond turning such dire situations around. Recovery Stories is a collection of true stories of triumph over adversity. It tells how the horror of addiction can be overcome, how people can free themselves of their dependency. It is a book of hope and inspiration which will encourage all those seeking ‘new ways to live’ a full, addiction-free and successful life. ‘This book tells the stories that need to be told... Addiction is an illness and has to be seen and tackled as such’: Alastair Campbell, Ambassador for Time to Change and Alcohol Concern. From the Foreword: ‘People who are struggling with addiction have got to know that recovery is out there and it is possible... I hope that the stories in this book will help people understand that recovery is a possibility and, if you are struggling with addiction, that it is a possibility for you’: Mitch Winehouse, Founder of the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Author: Kate Jopling has spent 15 years working in public policy, campaigning or communications roles, initially as a House of Commons researcher, later in senior positions with Catch 22, Help the Aged and the Campaign to End Loneliness where she was director. She has also worked in the Social Exclusion Unit. She has won various awards, including in 2008 when at the Women in Public Life Awards MPs and peers voted her Public Affairs Achiever of the Year. She is now a consultant who spends her time “giving people a voice” by researching and writing on a wide range of social issues. Mitch Winehouse and members of his family founded The Amy Winehouse Foundation which works to prevent the effects of drug and alcohol misuse on young people. It also aims to support, inform and inspire vulnerable and disadvantaged young people to help them reach their full potential. In association with Addaction.

        Never Mind the Botox

        by Mitch Stansbury

We, four suburban forty-somethings, had all but ignored live music, proper live music, for twenty years - The Banshees, Buzzcocks and The Smiths happened so long ago that they might have been in a different life. Live music now was a mum from Doncaster pretending to be the blonde one from Abba, and we needed help. Thankfully, it came, as our children found indie-rock, and demanded to see it up close. A night at Wembley with The Killers kick-started a five year odyssey of seventy nights, a hundred bands, and all of this – Superheroes in spandex, Viking Metallers in a strip-club, cross-dressing sax players, foam-parties, typewriter solos, half-eaten birds, demented babysitters, homicidal ticket-touts, terrifying body-art, the world’s laziest roadie, and of course, some dad-dancing. We’ve met an 80’s legend playing drums in a punk covers band, and been stalked by a masked man in a gay night-club. We’ve been derailed by the Pope, and insulted by a singer who then bought us all a drink, and even, briefly, had rock stars’ arse in our hands. Well, in my hands. Fleeting it may have been, but he hasn’t called, or even sent a text. Never Mind the Botox is a journey of mild, middle-aged rebellion, as once or twice a month, we try not to stand out in a crowd thirty years younger - we usually fail. Sometimes the children keep us company, others we leave them at home, but there is always, along the way, some fun to be had. And so what if we can’t hear the next morning. Old-people need rock’n’roll too.

        Details Are Unprintable

Wayne Lonergan and the Sensational Cafe Society Murder

        by Allan Levine

The body of 22-year-old New York City socialite Patricia Burton Lonergan was found in her bedroom. Charged with her death was her husband of two years, Wayne Lonergan. Details Are Unprintable is a suspenseful account that builds from the moment the body was discovered in October 1943 to Lonergan’s conviction in April 1944. The case focused on the tantalizing rumor that Lonergan, a 26-year-old cadet and playboy, was a “homosexual,” who killed his wife in a fit of rage when she removed him from her will.   Part fast-paced drama and part social history, this is a chronicle of Lonergan in denial living in an intolerant world, contrasted with the life of his entitled wife.   What truly happened on that tragic night? Should we accept Lonergan’s confession as the jury did? Or was he a victim of physical and mental abuse by the state prosecutors and the police, as he maintained for the rest of his life?

        JOAN BAEZ

        The Last Leaf

        by Elizabeth Thomson

Since she stepped onstage unannounced at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival, Joan Baez has occupied a singular place in popular music. Within three years, she had recorded three best-selling albums and had embarked on a tour of southern US campuses, playing to integrated audiences in an era of segregation. When Time magazine chronicled the folk revival in November 1962, her portrait was on the cover. Her voice was “as lustrous and rich as old gold.” She has mentored generations of singer-songwriters, most famously Bob Dylan. But Joan Baez has always been much more than simply a singer. Even before she joined Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. on the podium at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963, she had used her gift to bring solace and hope to people who had little of either. In words and deeds, Baez has consistently championed social justice, nonviolence the guiding principle of her life, and the causes for which she has campaigned are legion. Whether playing to integrated audiences in the American south during the years of segregation, in Latin America during the years of brutal dictatorships, or Sarajevo under siege, Baez offered “an act of love, sharing, witness and music”. Approaching 80, she has stepped down from the stage following a worldwide farewell tour and a final, Grammy-nominated album. She is now embarked on a new chapter of life—painting.Drawing on interviews with long-time friends and musical associates, and on conversations across four decades with Baez herself, Joan Baez: The Last Leaf is a celebration of a timeless figure whose music and influence will endure long after her voice is silenced. The Discography is by Grammy-nominated music historian Arthur Levy. "I don t think it is an exaggeration to say that this is a book destined to become the definitive word on the life and times of Joan Baez; put it on your list of this year's essential reads."Americana UK Author Elizabeth Thomson has written articles and interviews in newspapers and magazines around the world, including The Times and MOJO. A contributor to The New Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, Thomson is also the editor of Conclusions on the Wall: New Essays on Bob Dylan and the co-editor of The Dylan Companion.
