It also looks in detail at the documentary traces of Schotten's career, and of his networks of friendship and patronage, and tries to understand how he fitted into the structures of a university which has often been (wrongly) understood as hostile to humanism. Based on primary archival material, this is the only full-length study of this underrated German humanist's life and work. ;

The Arctic region has been the subject of much popular writing. This book considers nineteenth-century representations of the Arctic, and draws upon an extensive range of evidence that will allow the 'widest connections' to emerge from a 'cross-disciplinary analysis' using different methodologies and subject matter. It positions the Arctic alongside more thoroughly investigated theatres of Victorian enterprise. In the nineteenth century, most images were in the form of paintings, travel narratives, lectures given by the explorers themselves and photographs. The book explores key themes in Arctic images which impacted on subsequent representations through text, painting and photography. For much of the nineteenth century, national and regional geographical societies promoted exploration, and rewarded heroic endeavor. The book discusses images of the Arctic which originated in the activities of the geographical societies. The Times provided very low-key reporting of Arctic expeditions, as evidenced by its coverage of the missions of Sir John Franklin and James Clark Ross. However, the illustrated weekly became one of the main sources of popular representations of the Arctic. The book looks at the exhibitions of Arctic peoples, Arctic exploration and Arctic fauna in Britain. Late nineteenth-century exhibitions which featured the Arctic were essentially nostalgic in tone. The Golliwogg's Polar Adventures, published in 1900, drew on adult representations of the Arctic and will have confirmed and reinforced children's perceptions of the region. Text books, board games and novels helped to keep the subject alive among the young.

Zweifellos ist es ein verlegerisches Wagnis, DʼArcy Thompsons legendäres Buch im Zeitalter des Quasi-Ausschließlichkeitsanspruchs von Biochemie und Molekularbiologie in einer Neuauflage und dazu in deutscher Sprache herauszubringen. Wer von den jungen Biologen verbindet heute noch mit Thompsons Namen einen Begriff? Wer war dieser Mann? Was macht sein Werk noch heute druckenswert? Man könnte vielleicht aphoristisch sagen: DʼArcy Thompson war einer jener Polyhistores, von denen man meinte, sie seien mit dem Verklingen des Barock ausgestorben und in späterer Zeit nicht einmal mehr denkbar. Mithin ein verspäteter Barock-Gelehrter? Keineswegs, sondern einer der Pioniere der modernsten Biologie! Er vereinigte in sich das Denkvermögen des Mathematikers und Physikers mit dem des Linguisten und des Biologen, und er verfügt über das Handwerkliche aller drei dieser – ach doch so verschiedenen – Wissensgebiete. Dieses Buch hat eine widersprüchliche Geschichte: 1917 erschien die erste Auflage – damals vollendete Ketzerei – mit 793 Seiten Umfang, 1942 eine Erweiterung auf 1116 Seiten. Die posthume Neuauflage von Bonner – sie liegt der Übersetzung zugrunde – knüpft an die erste Auflage an, läßt vieles aus (weil es nicht mehr aktuell ist) und bringt zahlreiche Kommentare des Herausgebers. Es handelt sich also bei der vorliegenden Ausgabe um eine »Klassikeredition in Auswahl und mit Kommentar versehen«. Dies ist bei einem Buch mit einer erst 55jährigen Geschichte bemerkenswert. Um es vorwegzunehmen: von Thompsons Konzeption ist nichts Wesentliches verlorengegangen, und die Kommentare machen die Orientierung für denjenigen, der die Literatur nicht selbst kennt, leichter. James Tod's journeys among the Rajputs

This study of the British colonial administrator James Tod (1782-1835), who spent five years in north-western India (1818-22) collecting every conceivable type of material of historical or cultural interest on the Rajputs and the Gujaratis, gives special attention to his role as a mediator of knowledge about this little-known region of the British Empire in the early nineteenth century to British and European audiences. The book aims to illustrate that British officers did not spend all their time oppressing and inferiorising the indigenous peoples under their colonial authority, but also contributed to propagating cultural and scientific information about them, and that they did not react only negatively to the various types of human difference they encountered in the field.

Beide sind streng gläubig, jeder in seiner eigenen Überzeugung. Als sich ihre ungleichen kulturellen Wege treffen, folgt ein interessanter Prozess gegenseitiger Entdeckungen. Eine fesselnde, anregende, amüsante und bisweilen widersprüchliche Geschichte entspinnt sich. Das Leben der Zwillingsbrüder wird jäh überschattet durch den Tod eines der beiden als Opfer eines Selbstmordattentats. Der andere Zwilling bleibt allein auf der Welt zurück, auf dem schwierigen Weg der Selbstfindung des allein gelassenen Bruders. Mike Carmel wurde 1956 in Liverpool geboren. Er studierte Wirtschaft an der Universität Liverpool und der Brunel Universität in London. Obwohl der Autor eine christliche Erziehung genoss, trat er 1980 zum Judentum über. Folglich bewahrt er einen tiefen Respekt für beide Religionen. Mike Carmel lebte in den letzten 25 Jahren in Israel. Er diente in der israelischen Armee als Sanitäter, war in der Softwareindustrie tätig und arbeitete in beiden Ländern als Pädagoge. 1981 heiratete Mike seine jetzige israelische Frau. Die beiden haben drei Kinder. Seine Tochter, der das Buch gewidmet wurde, wurde während ihres Armeedienstes 2003 bei einem Selbstmordattentat schwer verletzt

Then, one of them tragically ends his life as a victim of a suicide bombing, and the other twin is left to endure the harsh process of reinterpreting his personal identity, once again alone in the world. Mike Carmel was born in 1956 in Liverpool, and studied economics at Liverpool University and at Brunel University in London. Although the author had an Anglican upbringing, in 1980 he decided to convert to Judaism. He consequently maintains a deep respect for both religions. Working in the hi-tech sector, Mike has been living in Israel for the past 25 years. He served in the Israel Defense Forces as a medic, and has also worked in several educational capacities in both countries. Mike married his Israeli wife in 1981, and they have 3 children. His daughter, to whom the book has been dedicated, was seriously injured her army service by a suicide bomber in 2003.

Adelbert von Chamisso (Louis Charles Adelaide de Ch.), Dichter und Naturforscher, wurde am 30.1.1781 als Sohn eines lothringischen Offizers auf Schloß Boncourt (Champagne) geboren und starb am 21.1.1838 in Berlin. Seine nach der Konfiskation gänzlich verarmten Eltern flüchteten 1790 mit dem Kind vor der Fränzöischen Revolution nach Lüttich. Von dort kamen sie über Den Haag, Düsseldorf und Bayreuthz nach Berlin. Dort wurde Chamisso 1801 Leutnant mit einem preußischen Regiment. Vom Millitärdienst enttäuscht, nahm er 1806 seinen Abschied und widmete sich in Frankreich und auf dem Gut der Mme. de Stael naturwissenschaftliche Studien. 1812-1815 Studium der Medizin und Botanik in Berlin. 1815-1818 nahm Chamisso als Naturforscheran einer russischen Weltumsegelung teil, die er in seinen "Bemerkungen und Ansichten auf einer Entdeckungsreise" (1821) schilderte. Seine symbolische Novelle vom verkauften Schatten, "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte", schrieb er während der Freiheitskriege 1813 in Kunersdorf. In fast alle Weltsprachen übersetzt, machte sie ihren Verfasser weltberühmt. Die reizvollsten Illustrationen zu "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" erschienen 1908. Mit ihren hat Emil Preetouris (1883-1973) - Mitarbeiter der Zeitschriften "Simplicissismus" und "Jugend" - seine Laufbahn als Erneuerer der Buchkunst und als einer der einflußreichsten Graphiker unseres Jahrhunderts begonnen. Seine Essay "Adelbert von Chamisso" schrieb Thomas Mann 19211 eigens für die Einzelausgabe dieser Novelle.

Karl Kraus wurde am 28. April 1874 im nordböhmischen Gitschin / Österreich-Ungarn (heute: Jicín / Tschechien) als Sohn eines jüdischen Papierfabrikanten geboren. In Wien studierte er seit 1877 Jura, Philosophie und Germanistik, schloß das Studium jedoch nicht ab. Schon während der Studienzeit veröffentlichte er literaturkritische Beiträge u.a. in der Zeitschrift Die Gesellschaft. Daneben betätigte er sich als Dramatiker, Lyriker und Vortragskünstler und hatte Kontakt zu Mitgliedern der Gruppe "Jung-Wien", u.a. Arthur Schnitzler und Hugo von Hofmannsthal, von denen er sich aber 1897 in der Satire Die demolierte Literatur distanzierte. 1899 gründete er die Zeitschrift Die Fackel. Sie war zeitlebens die wichtigste Veröffentlichungsplattform für seine kulturkritischen Beiträge. Er starb am 12. Juni 1936 in Wien.
