Although the author had an Anglican upbringing, in 1980 he decided to convert to Judaism. He consequently maintains a deep respect for both religions. Working in the hi-tech sector, Mike has been living in Israel for the past 25 years. He served in the Israel Defense Forces as a medic, and has also worked in several educational capacities in both countries. Mike married his Israeli wife in 1981, and they have 3 children. His daughter, to whom the book has been dedicated, was seriously injured her army service by a suicide bomber in 2003.

Life in the farming co-ops there was simple, peaceful, and good, based on bedrocks of family, community, and faith.Then the repression began. A failed attempt at a coup had led to continued fighting between rebels and government, though in areas far from the almost-utopian Ixcan region. U.S. military and CIA intervention helped defeat the insurgency, but the social inequalities that had led to the movement remained, and the revolution went underground. The Guatemalan army, searching everywhere for those who opposed it, increased its control over the isolated jungle area. Co-op directors, teachers, catechists, and then anyone suspected of being one of or assisting the guerrillas was selectively "disappeared." The army turned to a scorched-earth policy, killing animals, burning crops, uprooting fruit trees, destroying towns, massacring their people. Throughout the Ixcan, those who survived fled. Some returned to their original mountain villages, others crossed the border into Mexico, and a third group survived for sixteen years hiding in the jungle–men, women, and children. Primeval growth took over the land as the war with the guerrilla movement raged on to encompass the entire nation.When finally peace accords were signed, the people of the Ixcan returned. Homes were rebuilt, land reclaimed, the area thrived again. But sixteen years were lost, along with countless lives. For Mike Sullivan, who had returned there when his help was needed, the story of those years–of how the people of the Ixcan survived, and of the many who didn't–was one that had to be told. In three visits, he conducted the interviews that form this book, talking with the villagers he'd known long before. At first, they spoke hesitantly, then with the flood force of vivid memory, telling of their first arrival at the Ixcan, the lives they'd made, and the years of the repression and worse. Their stories are gripping, fascinating, painful–but most of all, deeply human as we witness their struggle to survive and feel the force of the simple values that ultimately carried them through to a new and better life.

This is the first book to examine the relationship between English nationalism, Brexit and 'the Anglosphere' - a politically-contested term used to denote English-speaking countries sharing cultural and historical roots with the UK. In the aftermath of the UK's EU referendum some pointed to a 'revolt' of those 'left behind' by globalisation. Ben Wellings argues instead that Brexit was and is an elite project, firmly situated within the tradition of an expansive English nationalism. Far from being parochial 'Little Englanders', elite Brexiteers sought to replace the European Union with trade and security alliances between 'true friends' and 'traditional allies' in the Anglosphere. Brexit was thus reassuringly presented as a giant leap into the known. As the UK's future relationship with the rest of the world is negotiated, the need to understand this 'English moment' has never been more pressing.

Die von Yigael Yadin in den 1960er Jahren geleiteten Ausgrabungen legten den festungsartigen Palast von Herodes frei, wo jüdische Rebellen den letzten Aufstand gegen die mächtigen römischen Legionen in den Jahren 66 bis 73 n. Chr. durchführten. Gemäß der Geschichtsschreibung des zeitgenössischen Geschichtsschreibers Josephus Flavius begingen die Verteidiger einen Massenselbstmord, um sich nicht ergeben zu müssen. Hunderte Freiwillig aus aller Welt nahmen an diesen Ausgrabungen teil. Verschiedene Kapitel behandeln die architektonischen Überreste und kleinen Funde aus den herodianischen, zelotischen und römischen Perioden, die römischen Wälle und die Überreste der byzantinischen Periode. Tausende Artefakte einschließlich Manuskripten wurden bei den Ausgrabungen gefunden. Masada ist nicht nur ein archäologischer Fundort, sondern auch ein Symbol – hauptsächlich, jedoch nicht ausschließlich, für zeitgenössische Israeliten. Schoeps, Franz Rosenzweig folgend, ging von der Bejahung der Galuth (Diaspora) aus, während Ben-Chorin die Verwirklichung des Judentums primär in Israel sah und noch heute sieht. Beiden ging es um die Aufzeigung der Demarkationslinien des jüdischen Glaubens, von dem sie meinten, daß er aus der Bewußtseinslage des heutigen Menschen, in Konfrontation mit dem Komplex der Überlieferung, gewonnen werden sollte.

This book summarizes the eight volumes of the Masada Final Reports series that have been published to date. The excavations led by Yigael Yadin at the site in the 1960s uncovered the Herodian palace-fortress where Jewish rebels in the revolt against Rome made their last stand against the mighty Roman legions in the years 66–73 CE. According to the accounts of contemporary historian Josephus Flavius, the defenders committed mass suicide rather than surrender. Hundreds of volunteers from around the world participated in those excavations. Chapters cover the architectural remains and small finds of the Herodian, Zealot, and Roman periods; the Roman siegeworks; and Byzantine period remains. Thousands of artifacts including manuscripts were found in the excavations. Masada is not only an archaeological site but also a symbol – mainly, though not exclusively, for modern Israelis. This is reflected in the hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from around the world. Masada was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. The final chapter of the book examines the so-called “Masada myth” in light of the archaeological evidence, evaluating recent criticism of the methodology and historical conclusions of the excavators of Masada in view of their actual findings. Amnon Ben-Tor, Yigael Yadin Professor Emeritus of the Archaeology of Eretz Israel at the Institute of Archaeology of the Hebrew University, was a team member of the Yadin excavation of Masada. He studied archaeology and Jewish history at the Hebrew University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1968 and taught until 2004 while excavating various sites in Israel, including a regional study of the western Jezreel Valley at the sites of Tel Qiri, Tel Qashish, and Yoqne'am.
