Get Fresh Books Publishing is a non-profit, cooperative press devoted to amplifying diverse voices in poetry and making the publication process accessible to marginalized communities. Our primary objective is to provide opportunities for underrepresented voices by eliminating economic and societal barriers, such as submission fees and contests, which may inhibit marginalized voices from contributing to the literary conversation. As a cooperative press, we encourage manuscript submissions from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, people with disabilities and people living with mental illnesses. By doing so, we explicitly reject any “ism” or phobia which seeks to suppress the voices of those who receive insufficient or inadequate representation in literature. In the four short years of our founding, we have been able to preserve our commitment to diversity and inclusivity by publishing the work of 12 talented and distinct poets, whose poetry cover a wide range of topics from ethnicity, sexuality and religion to immigration, suicide and discrimination. Our press’s cooperative process of integrating the ideas and skills of our poets, editors and publisher have given us the ability to bring fresh and diverse voices into the literary world. With the help of donations, grants and private investments, we have been able to publish each literary work without charging a single submission fee to ensure that poets and writers of all ages, ethnicities, sexual orientations, abilities, and economic statuses would have their voices heard.

Voices out of silence

This exciting book, newly available in paperback, aims to establish the historical and cultural reasons why there was only a participation rate of 7-8% by the Catholic population in policing Northern Ireland when the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) came into being in 2001, even though Catholics constituted 46% of the total population. It also aims to ascertain whether or not implementation of the Patten Commission's recommendation to recruit to the PSNI on a 50: 50 basis between Catholics and non-Catholics has resulted in greater representation and what the political and cultural obstacles might be in transforming policing from meeting colonial model criteria to those of the liberal model advocated by Patten. In doing this, author Mary Gethins uses a wealth of historical data to show that there has for a long time been a problematic relationship between the native Irish Catholic population and the police, and the reasons for Catholic under-representation in the police force can be largely put down to this legacy. A survey of Catholic police officers focusing on family history, reasons for joining the police and sacrifices perceived to have been made in joining a largely Protestant organisation provide a strong empirical evidence base from which Gethins draws illuminating lessons. The work is informed by sociological theory to show that Catholic police officers are atypical of the Catholic population at large in Northern Ireland, and best explained by the concept of fragmented identity. ;

Mary Kaldor war die erste, die über „neue Kriege“ als Schattenseiten der Globalisierung nachgedacht hat. Ihr Standardwerk belegt an zahlreichen Fällen die These, daß sich seit dem Ende der achtziger Jahre in Osteuropa, auf dem Balkan, in Afrika, Südostasien und zuletzt im Irak eine neue Form organisierter Gewalt, ein neuer Typ von Krieg, herausgebildet hat. Dieser neue Krieg entsteht in Situationen, in denen sich das staatliche Gewaltmonopol aufgelöst hat und in die Hände von paramilitärischen Organisationen übergegangen ist. Sie unterscheiden sich von den alten durch ihre Ziele, die Methode der Gewaltanwendung und die Finanzierung. Ihr Ziel besteht in dem, was Mary Kaldor „Politik der Identität“ nennt: all jene zu attackieren, die nicht zur eigenen Nation, Religion, Sprachgemeinschaft oder zum eigenen Klan gehören.

Eine notwendige Einheit hat Gregory Bateson an dem vorliegenden Buch gearbeitet, das er zu Lebzeiten aber nicht mehr zum Abschluß bringen konnte und das von seiner Tochter Mary Catherine fertiggestellt wurde.Ausgehend von dem, was wir über die biologische Welt wissen, sowie davon, was wir über das »Erkennen« zu begreifen vermögen, möchte Bateson erklären, was unter »dem Heiligen« zu verstehen sein könnte. Neben dem »Heiligen« spielen zwei weitere »integrative Erfahrungsdimensionen« eine wichtige Rolle: die des »ästhetischen« und die des »Bewußtseins«. Deshalb habe er sie mit einer tief ins Gesicht gezogenen Kopfbedeckung verborgen). Durch ihre Mutter gehört Wagmuhawin, wie ihr indianischer Name lautet, zu den Dakota. Sie lebt auf der Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, ist offizielle Sprecherin der Dakota-Indianer und wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet. Michael Schlottner, geboren 1956, ist Ethnologe und arbeitet in mehreren Forschungsprojekten an der Universität Frankfurt. Seit 1987 beteiligt an Feldforschungen in den USA, Kanada und Ghana.
