Fjodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski wurde am 11. November 1821 in Moskau geboren und starb am 9. Februar 1881 in St. Petersburg. Er entstammte einer verarmten Adelsfamilie, sein Vater war Arzt. Nach dem Tod seiner Mutter 1837 ließ sich Dostojewski mit seinem Bruder Michail in St. Petersburg nieder, wo er von 1838 bis 1843 an der Militärakademie Bauingenieurwesen studierte. 1844 begann er mit den Arbeiten zu seinem 1846 veröffentlichten Erstlingswerk Arme Leute. Dieser Roman machte ihn zusammen mit Der Doppelgänger, der ebenfalls 1846 erschien, schlagartig berühmt. Zu seinem Hauptwerk zählen unter anderem die Romane Schuld und Sühne aus dem Jahr 1866, Der Idiot (1868) und Die Brüder Karamasow (1880). Dostojewski ist ein zentraler Vertreter des Realismus innerhalb der russischen Literatur und gilt neben Lew Nikolajewitsch Tolstoj als bedeutendster russischer Schriftsteller. Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann wurde am 24. Januar 1776 in Königsberg geboren. Er war Jurist, Kapellmeister, Komponist, Musikkritiker, Maler und Schriftsteller. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehören Die Elixiere des Teufels, Die Serapionsbrüder und Lebensansichten des Katers Murr. Er starb am 25. Juni 1822 in Berlin. Edgar Allan Poe wurde am 19. Januar 1809 in Boston geboren. Nach dem Tod seiner Eltern 1811 wuchs er bei dem reichen Kaufmann John Allan auf. Poes Stiefvater verweigerte ihm ausreichende finanzielle Unterstützung, so daß er sein Studium an der Universität Virginia und seine Ausbildung an der Militärakademie West Point nicht abschließen konnte. Poe schrieb bereits zu Studienzeiten Gedichte, jedoch mit geringem Erfolg. Nach der Hochzeit mit seiner 13jährigen Cousine Virginia Clemm begann er für verschiedene Zeitschriften zu arbeiten. Seine Rezensionen und Artikel machten ihn als Autor bekannt, die Familie lebte jedoch in armen Verhältnissen. Berühmt wurde er mit dem Gedicht The Raven (Der Rabe, 1845). Seine Gedichte und Kurzprosastücke gelten als Wegbereiter des Symbolismus, seine Kurzgeschichten und Erzählungen zählen zu den Meisterwerken des Genres. Heute ist er vor allem als Verfasser von Detektiv- und Schauergeschichten, wie The Murders in the Rue Morgue (Der Doppelmord in der Rue Morgue, 1841), bekannt. Mit C. Auguste Dupin schuf er außerdem eine der bekanntesten Detektivfiguren der Kriminalliteratur. Edgar Allan Poe starb am 7. Oktober 1849 unter ungeklärten Umständen. Robert Louis Stevenson, geboren 1850 in Edinburgh (Schottland) und verstorben 1894 in Vailima (Samoa), studierte Rechtswissenschaft an der Universität Edinburgh, bevor er sich vollends dem Schreiben widmete. Stevenson hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk von Reiseerzählungen, Abenteuerliteratur sowie Lyrik und Essays. Bekanntheit erlangte er vor allem durch Die Schatzinsel. Oscar (Fingal O’Flahertie Wills) Wilde wurde am 16. Oktober 1854 in Dublin als Sohn des Arztes William Wilde und der Dichterin Jane Francesca Elgee geboren. Er studierte klassische Literatur am Trinity College in Dublin und am Magdalen College in Oxford. 1879 ging er nach London, wo er sich bald durch seinen extravaganten Lebensstil und seine rhetorische Gewandtheit einen Namen machte. Nach Reisen in die USA, nach Kanada und Frankreich arbeitete Wilde zunächst für verschiedene Zeitungen als Lektor und Herausgeber. Seit 1884 mit Constance Lloyd verheiratet, schrieb und veröffentlichte er 1888 für seine eigenen Kinder die Märchensammlung The Happy Prince and Other Tales. In den folgenden Jahren entstanden weitere Erzählungen (wie The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891) und zahlreiche Bühnenstücke (wie The Importance of Being Earnest, 1895), die außerordentliches literarisches und gesellschaftliches Aufsehen erregten. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Erfolges stürzte ihn dann jedoch der Skandal um das langjährige Verhältnis mit Lord Alfred Douglas in den Ruin. Wilde verlor eine Verleumdungsklage gegen Douglas Vater, der ihn der Sodomie bezichtigt hatte, und wurde selbst in einem Strafprozeß wegen Unzucht zu einer zweijährigen Haftstrafe verurteilt. Nach seiner Entlassung aus dem Gefängnis in Reading floh er vor der gesellschaftlichen Ächtung unter falschem Namen nach Paris. Völlig mittellos starb er hier am 30. November 1900. Hermann Röhl, geboren 1851 in Wittstock und verstorben 1923 in Naumburg, war ein deutscher Übersetzer, der viele klassische russische Werke ins Deutsche übertrug. Barbara Cramer-Nauhaus, geboren 1927 in Brandenburg an der Havel, studierte Anglistik und Germanistik in Halle und Heidelberg und war seit 1951 als freiberufliche Übersetzerin tätig. Sie übertrug Belletristik, Lyrik und Essays verschiedener englischer und amerikanischer Autoren des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts ins Deutsche. Barbara Cramer-Nauhaus verstarb im März 2001 in Halle an der Saale.

Destinations are a central feature of tourism and the focus of much tourism research. Destinations have been studied from diverse perspectives using multiple concepts and a range of approaches. As a result, destination research today has become increasingly fragmented as studies have become more specialized. There is a need for a more integrated approach, one which systematically draws together these different research threads to provide a comprehensive and coherent picture and a fuller understanding of destinations, their structure and how they function. This book provides such a synthesis by critically reviewing a wide range of international research and incorporating in one volume many different facets of destinations from studies which have appeared in related but often divergent literatures. Conceptual and methodological issues are illustrated with empirical examples from Europe, North and South America, Asia and Oceania. This material is drawn together around two major structural themes: spatial and organizational structure. Spatial structure concerns the physical location, distribution, configuration and inter-connectedness of products, services and actors and the factors which underlie the resultant patterns of these. Organizational structure focuses on the diverse configurations and the ways in which multiple actors, collectively and individually, come together, interact and behave to produce the experiences sought by tourists.
