In this light, it's unsurprising that conservation of rare breed animals has been neglected. Yet the preservation of these genetic resources - this biological diversity - is an essential ingredient of sustainable life on Earth, and not something we can afford to lose. This book, straight from the 'horse's mouth' Lawrence Alderson CBE, challenges often repeated 'facts' about livestock farming and argues for a reasoned and evidence-based approach from political and public circles. Correcting misconceptions as he goes, he recounts the creation and development of the rare breed conservation movement, addresses extinctions and genetic safe-guarding measures, and considers where we go from here. Challenged as we are by climate change, sustainability and feeding the world, perhaps it is these endangered animals that hold the answer - perhaps with them, we can adapt to our changing environment and see a way forward to a more certain future.

This volume is the first ever attempt to unite and translate some of the key texts which informed Johan Huizinga's famous study of the Burgundian court, The Waning of the Middle Ages, a work which has never gone out of print. It combines these texts with sources that Huizinga did not consider, those that illuminate the wider civic world that the Burgundian court inhabited and the dynamic interaction between court and city. Through these sources, and an introduction offering new perspectives on recent historiography, the book tests whether Huizinga's controversial vision of the period still stands. Adelbert von Chamisso (Louis Charles Adelaide de Ch.), Dichter und Naturforscher, wurde am 30.1.1781 als Sohn eines lothringischen Offizers auf Schloß Boncourt (Champagne) geboren und starb am 21.1.1838 in Berlin. Seine nach der Konfiskation gänzlich verarmten Eltern flüchteten 1790 mit dem Kind vor der Fränzöischen Revolution nach Lüttich. Von dort kamen sie über Den Haag, Düsseldorf und Bayreuthz nach Berlin. Dort wurde Chamisso 1801 Leutnant mit einem preußischen Regiment. Vom Millitärdienst enttäuscht, nahm er 1806 seinen Abschied und widmete sich in Frankreich und auf dem Gut der Mme. de Stael naturwissenschaftliche Studien. 1812-1815 Studium der Medizin und Botanik in Berlin. 1815-1818 nahm Chamisso als Naturforscheran einer russischen Weltumsegelung teil, die er in seinen "Bemerkungen und Ansichten auf einer Entdeckungsreise" (1821) schilderte. Seine symbolische Novelle vom verkauften Schatten, "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte", schrieb er während der Freiheitskriege 1813 in Kunersdorf. In fast alle Weltsprachen übersetzt, machte sie ihren Verfasser weltberühmt. Die reizvollsten Illustrationen zu "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" erschienen 1908. Mit ihren hat Emil Preetouris (1883-1973) - Mitarbeiter der Zeitschriften "Simplicissismus" und "Jugend" - seine Laufbahn als Erneuerer der Buchkunst und als einer der einflußreichsten Graphiker unseres Jahrhunderts begonnen. Seine Essay "Adelbert von Chamisso" schrieb Thomas Mann 19211 eigens für die Einzelausgabe dieser Novelle.

Peter Fabjan, Bruder und gleichzeitig behandelnder Arzt Thomas Bernhards, gibt in seinen Erinnerungen einen Einblick in das Leben an der Seite, besonders aber auch im Schatten des österreichischen Dramatikers und Romanschriftstellers, der Weltruhm erlangte. Er erzählt von den schwierigen und vielfach belasteten familiären Verhältnissen genauso wie von der Kriegskindheit, von gemeinsamen Reisen in die USA oder nach Portugal und von seinen Bemühungen um das Leben seines von langer und schwerer Krankheit gezeichneten Patienten.
