Wichtige Werke entstanden während dieser Zeit: das Volksstück Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti, die Exilsatire Flüchtlingsgespräche, die Naturlyrik der Steffinischen Sammlung und das politische Gangsterstück Der Aufstieg des Arturo Ui. Brecht in Finnland verbindet die Entstehungsgeschichte und Interpretation dieser ›großen‹ Werke mit Brechts literarischer Arbeit von Tag zu Tag: mit seiner erstaunlichen Annäherung an die Volkspoesie, seiner Tätigkeit als Übersetzer und mit der Arbeit an den Fragment gebliebenen aristophanischen Revuen. Hans Peter Neureuters biographische Erzählung zeigt den Exilanten Brecht aber auch in seinem Alltagsleben mit der Familie und mit Freunden in Helsinki und auf dem Landgut Marlebäck der Schriftstellerin Hella Wuolijoki, bei Kontakten mit finnischen Schriftstellern, Theaterleuten und Politikern sowie bei den zermürbenden Bemühungen um Einreisevisen in die USA, Transitvisen und Aufenthaltsgenehmigungen, Schiffsbillets und Bürgschaften. Nicht zuletzt geht es um die politische Situation des Landes, das kurz nach Brechts Abreise seinen zweiten Krieg gegen die Sowjetunion begann – an der Seite der deutschen Wehrmacht. Der vorliegende Text ist die überarbeitete Fassung der Habilitationsschrift Neureuters an der Universität Regensburg, wo er bis 2002 Neuere deutsche Literatur lehrte.

»Versprechen auf Deutsch« bietet die erweiterte Version der Rede, die Peter Sloterdijk in einer Matinee der Münchner Kammerspiele am Sonntag, dem 10. Dezember 1989, gehalten hat. Es versteht sich von selbst, daß die dramatischen Vorgänge des November 1989 den Bezugsrahmen für sämtliche Aussagen des vorliegenden Textes bilden. Die aktuellen Ergebnisse haben es unvermeidlich gemacht, diese Rede »über« das eigene Land als Rede »an« die deutsche Nation vorzutragen. Eine solche Adressierung folgt nicht so sehr dem fragwürdigen rhetorischen Vorbild Fichtes; sie ergibt sich vielmehr aus den Überlegungen des Autors über den Zusammenhang zwischen Sprache und Nationalität. Die historischen Umstände von 1989 sind nicht weniger bemerkenswert als die von 1808. Aber es liegt heute in der Natur der Sache, daß man sich »an« die Angehörigen einer wieder unruhig gewordenen Nation wenden muß, um etwas »über« die zu sagen.
