The book investigates the lives and public work of Henry and Emily Simon, and Ernest and Shena Simon. Through philanthropy and work in social reform, the two generations of the Simons greatly enriched Manchester's cultural and civic institutions, worked to improve the lives of its citizens, and helped to spearhead profound national reforms in health, housing, planning and education. While many people in Manchester are familiar with the Simon name through Shena Simon College, Simonsway, and the Simon Building at the University of Manchester, there is scant public knowledge of who the Simons were and their legacy. As such, this edited volume of collected essays aims to illuminate their fascinating lives and public service to rehabilitate the Simons and examine their local and national significance.

Max Frisch, geboren am 15. Mai 1911 in Zürich, arbeitete zunächst als Journalist, später als Architekt, bis ihm mit seinem Roman Stiller (1954) der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller gelang. Es folgten die Romane Homo faber (1957) und Mein Name sei Gantenbein (1964) sowie Erzählungen, Tagebücher, Theaterstücke, Hörspiele und Essays. Frisch starb am 4. April 1991 in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Jetzt ist Sehenszeit (Suhrkamp 1998) sowie jetzt: max frisch (Suhrkamp 2001) und arbeitet als freier Journalist und Autor in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Adelbert von Chamisso (Louis Charles Adelaide de Ch.), Dichter und Naturforscher, wurde am 30.1.1781 als Sohn eines lothringischen Offizers auf Schloß Boncourt (Champagne) geboren und starb am 21.1.1838 in Berlin. Seine nach der Konfiskation gänzlich verarmten Eltern flüchteten 1790 mit dem Kind vor der Fränzöischen Revolution nach Lüttich. Von dort kamen sie über Den Haag, Düsseldorf und Bayreuthz nach Berlin. Dort wurde Chamisso 1801 Leutnant mit einem preußischen Regiment. Vom Millitärdienst enttäuscht, nahm er 1806 seinen Abschied und widmete sich in Frankreich und auf dem Gut der Mme. de Stael naturwissenschaftliche Studien. 1812-1815 Studium der Medizin und Botanik in Berlin. 1815-1818 nahm Chamisso als Naturforscheran einer russischen Weltumsegelung teil, die er in seinen "Bemerkungen und Ansichten auf einer Entdeckungsreise" (1821) schilderte. Seine symbolische Novelle vom verkauften Schatten, "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte", schrieb er während der Freiheitskriege 1813 in Kunersdorf. In fast alle Weltsprachen übersetzt, machte sie ihren Verfasser weltberühmt. Die reizvollsten Illustrationen zu "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" erschienen 1908. Mit ihren hat Emil Preetouris (1883-1973) - Mitarbeiter der Zeitschriften "Simplicissismus" und "Jugend" - seine Laufbahn als Erneuerer der Buchkunst und als einer der einflußreichsten Graphiker unseres Jahrhunderts begonnen. Seine Essay "Adelbert von Chamisso" schrieb Thomas Mann 19211 eigens für die Einzelausgabe dieser Novelle.

This book offers the first authoritative guide to assumptions about time in theories of contemporary world politics. It demonstrates how predominant theories of the international or global 'present' are affected by temporal assumptions, grounded in western political thought, that fundamentally shape what we can and cannot know about world politics today. The first part of the book traces the philosophical roots of assumptions about time in contemporary political theory. The second part examines contemporary theories of world politics, including liberal and realist International Relations theories and the work of Habermas, Hardt and Negri, Virilio and Agamben. In each case, it is argued, assumptions about political time ensure the identification of the particular temporality of western experience with the political temporality of the world as such and put the theorist in the unsustainable position of holding the key to the direction of world history. In the final chapter, the book draws on postcolonial and feminist thinking, and the philosophical accounts of political time in the work of Derrida and Deleuze, to develop a new 'untimely' way of thinking about time in world politics. ;

Saul Newman argues that both Marxist politics of class struggle and the postmodern politics of difference have reached their historical and political limits, and that what is needed is a new approach to universality, a new way of thinking about collective politics. By exploring various themes and ideas within poststructuralist and post-Marxist theory, the book develops a new and original approach to universality - one that has important implications for politics today, particularly on questions of power, subjectivity, ethics and democracy. In so doing, it engages in debates with thinkers such as Laclau, Zizek, Badiou and Rancière over the future of radical politics. It also applies important theoretical insights to contemporary events such as the emergence of the anti-globalisation movement, the 'war on terrorism', the rise of anti-immigrant racism, and the nihilistic violence which lurks at the margins of the political. ;
