Resources for agricultural science are scarce across the world. Yet even as resources are shrinking, agricultural science has expanded its inquiry into many new areas - such as environmental preservation, food quality, and rural development - without forsaking its more traditional concerns. In a time of tight government budgets, research administrators are faced with the need to provide strong evidence that costs are justified by benefits. Science under Scarcity is an invaluable guide to the theory and methods necessary for evaluating research in agriculture and for setting priorities for resource allocation. Although economists have made significant progress in developing more sophisticated methods for research evaluation and priority setting, many research analysts and administrators do not have a working knowledge of those practices. Without the assistance of formal economic analysis it is particularly difficult to assess the social value of new technologies or to make informed judgements about the trade-offs that are involved in allocation decisions. Addressing that knowledge gap, this book reviews, synthesizes, and extends such methods as economic surplus analysis, econometric techniques, mathematical programming procedures, and scoring models. It discusses these practices in the context of scientific policy, describes their conceptual foundations, and explains how to do them.Originally published in 1995 in hardcover by Cornell University Press, it is now reissued in paperback by CAB INTERNATIONAL.

Modern readers mostly know Arcadia in its complete 'old' version, but it is the New Arcadia (published in 1590) that was the most influential and most widely imitated literary text of the sixteenth century. While preserving the basic plot - a ruler attempts to escape an alarming oracle by moving his family to the countryside and engaging in shepherd-cosplay until the arrival of two foreign princes triggers a chain of events leading to the fulfilment of the oracle - this version adds further narrative strands and introduces ambitious revisions that showcase Sidney's stylistic brilliance as a prose writer.

In this book, Alexander Samson presents a bold reassessment of Mary and Philip's reign, rescuing them from the neglect they have suffered at the hands of generations of historians. The co-monarchy of Mary I and Philip II put England at the heart of early modern Europe. This positive reassessment of their joint reign counters a series of parochial, misogynist and anti-Catholic assumptions, correcting the many myths that have grown up around the marriage and explaining the reasons for its persistent marginalisation in the historiography of sixteenth-century England. Using new archival discoveries and original sources, the book argues for Mary as a great Catholic queen, while fleshing out Philip's important contributions as king of England.

The conservation of genetic resources is vital to the maintenance of biodiversity and to the world’s ability to feed its growing population. There are now more than a thousand genebanks worldwide involved in the ex situ (meaning “away from the source”) storage of particular classes of crops. Since the 1970s, the eleven genebanks maintained by the centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have become pivotal to the global conservation effort. However, key policy and management issues – usually with economic dimensions – have largely been overlooked.This provided the impetus for a series of detailed economic studies, led by IFPRI, in collaboration with five CGIAR centres: CIAT (based in Colombia), CIMMYT (Mexico), ICARDA (Syria), ICRISAT (India) and IRRI (Philippines). This book reports these studies and discusses their wider implications.

Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Jetzt ist Sehenszeit (Suhrkamp 1998) sowie jetzt: max frisch (Suhrkamp 2001) und arbeitet als freier Journalist und Autor in Zürich. Julian Schütt, geboren 1964, war Literaturredakteur der Weltwoche und Redakteur der Kulturzeitschrift Du. Er konzipierte die große Max-Frisch-Ausstellung 1998, ist Herausgeber der Bände Max Frisch. Brink's provocative biography shows that Spenser was not the would-be court poet whom Karl Marx's described as 'Elizabeth's arse-kissing poet'. In this readable and informative account, Spenser is depicted as the protégé of a circle of London clergymen, who expected him to take holy orders. Brink shows that the young Spenser was known to Alexander Nowell, author of Nowell's Catechism and Dean of St. Paul's. Significantly revising the received biography, Brink argues that that it was Harvey alone who orchestrated Familiar Letters (1580). He used this correspondence to further his career and invented the portrait of Spenser as his admiring disciple. Contextualising Spenser's life by comparisons with Shakespeare and Sir Walter Ralegh, Brink shows that Spenser shared with Sir Philip Sidney an allegiance to the early modern chivalric code. His departure for Ireland was a high point, not an exile.

Völlig vorläuferlos war eine solche literarische Gestaltung des Luftkriegs und seiner Auswirkungen nicht, doch gab erstmals Kluge – nach Hans Erich Nossacks melancholischem Bericht über den Untergang Hamburgs und Gert Ledigs furios-desillusionistischer Vergeltung – eine analytisch-kühle Darstellung des Zerstörungswerks und sondierte inmitten des Infernos jenen Rest an Selbstbehauptung und Rationalität, der noch die Zusammenhänge der Katastrophe als verständlich und künftige Auswege als möglich erscheinen ließ. »Gerade Kluges detaillierte Beschreibung der gesellschaftlichen Organisation des Unglücks beinhaltet die Konjektur, daß ein richtiges Verständnis der von uns in einem fort inszenierten Katastrophen die erste Voraussetzung darstellt für die gesellschaftliche Organisation des Glücks.« (W. G. Sebald) Aus dem zeitlichen Abstand von 30 Jahren beleuchtet Alexander Kluge mit einigen neueren Texten nochmals die Erzählung von 1977. Sebalds Würdigung dieses Textes wird der Neuausgabe beigegeben.
