The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.

The collapse of the USSR, the end of the Cold War and the opening of the Soviet archives have transformed both what is known about the events of the Stalin period and the historian's perspective. Published 50 years after his death, this revised and expanded second edition looks at the entire period of Stalin's rule and includes chapters on ideology, politics, economic development, social change, the nationalities, culture and external relations (including World War II) and the Great Terror. The interpretation stresses the connnection between internal and external policy and the influence of ideology on both. Mawdsley includes many primary resources, which provide insights into the Stalin era. Some of these are important theoretical or propaganda documents which are re-published here together for the first time in many years. Others are secret items from the Russian archives that have only become available since late 1980s.

Noam Chomskys Buch »Reflexionen über die Sprache« (= stw 185) stellt eine Zusammenfassung der sprachphilosophischen Kontroverse zwischen Empirismus und Rationalismus und zwischen Semantik und Pragmatik dar. Es präsentiert aber auch einen neuen Entwicklungsstand in der Kontroverse darum, ob die Syntax unabhängig von der Semantik operieren kann. Chomsky führt in diesem Buch die bereits 1973 in den »Conditions of Transformation« entwickelte Spurentheorie ein und motiviert diese sowohl aus empirischen Gründen der Sprachbeschreibung als auch mit kognitiven Argumenten sowie mit Beobachtungen aus dem Prozeß des Spracherwerbs. Diese Theorie stellt eine starke Revision der bekannten Annahmen Chomskys dar. In den »Reflexionen über die Sprache« liefert Chomsky sozusagen »nur« den konzeptuellen Rahmen der neuen Spurentheorie. Helen Leuningers Arbeit diskutiert nun die methodologischen und empirischen Fragen, die sich aus dieser neuen Theorie ergeben, und stellt sie in den forschungs- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Zusammenhang, aus dem sie entstanden sind.

This book outlines the ways sport helps to create transnational social fields that interconnect migrants dispersed across a region known as the Black Atlantic: England, North America and the Caribbean. Many Caribbean men's stories about their experiences migrating to Canada, settling in Toronto, finding jobs and travelling involved some contact with a cricket and social club. This book offers a unique contribution to black diaspora studies through showing sport as a means of allaying the pain of ageing in the diaspora, creating transnational social networks and marking ethnic boundaries on a local scale. The book also brings black diaspora analysis to sport research, and through a close look at what goes on before, during and after cricket matches provides insights into the dis-unities, contradictions and complexities of Afro-diasporic identity in multicultural Canada.
