Kassem Al Tarras, owner and director of Al Rowad Publishers. He has a BA in English Literature from Damascus University. He is certified as a Teacher Trainer of English from the University of Delaware, USA and he is certified in ISBN from the International ISBN Agency in London. He works now as a director of Al Rowad Publishers, he is an English teacher and a member of new Curricula of English committe in the Ministery of Awqaf in Damascus and he is the directory of the ISBN Syrian Agency in the Syrian Publishers Association.

        Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-British novelist Joseph Conrad, about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa, by the story's narrator Charles Marlow. Marlow tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness.

        Joseph Conrad (eigentl. Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) wurde am 3. Dezember 1857 im polnischen Berdiczew (heute Berdychiv, Ukraine) als Sohn wohlhabender Landedelleute geboren. Sein Vater war sprachlich und literarisch begabt, übersetzte englische, französische und deutsche Klassiker und schrieb selber patriotische und religiöse Gedichte. Wegen seiner Zugehörigkeit zur polnischen Untergrundbewegung wurde er verhaftet und mit seiner Familie ins nordrussische Exil geschickt. Nach ihrer Begnadigung und Rückkehr verstarben beide Eltern kurz hintereinander und Conrad wuchs fortan bei seinem Onkel in Krakau auf. Im Alter von siebzehn Jahren heuerte er in Marseille bei der französischen Marine an. Bis 1894 befuhr Conrad zunächst unter französischer, später unter britischer Flagge die Weltmeere, dann mußte er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen die Seefahrt aufgeben. Er ließ sich in England nieder und widmete sich seinen literarischen Arbeiten. Obwohl kein Muttersprachler wurde er bald zu einem der meistgelesenen Autoren seines Landes und zählt bis heute zu einem Klassiker der englischen Sprache. Er starb am 3. August 1924 in Canterbury.

        Works of travel have been the subject of increasingly sophisticated studies in recent years. This book undermines the conviction with which nineteenth-century British writers talked about darkest Africa. It places the works of travel within the rapidly developing dynamic of Victorian imperialism. Images of Abyssinia and the means of communicating those images changed in response to social developments in Britain. As bourgeois values became increasingly important in the nineteenth century and technology advanced, the distance between the consumer and the product were justified by the scorn of African ways of eating. The book argues that the ambiguities and ambivalence of the travellers are revealed in their relation to a range of objects and commodities mentioned in narratives. For instance, beads occupy the dual role of currency and commodity. The book deals with Henry Morton Stanley's expedition to relieve Emin Pasha, and attempts to prove that racial representations are in large part determined by the cultural conditions of the traveller's society. By looking at Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, it argues that the text is best read as what it purports to be: a kind of travel narrative. Only when it is seen as such and is regarded in the context of the fin de siecle can one begin to appreciate both the extent and the limitations of Conrad's innovativeness.

        Conrad Haußmann (1857-1922) war in der wilhelminischen Zeit einer der bekanntesten linksliberalen Politiker und Publizisten. Als Abgeordneter des Reichstages, dem er von 1890 bis zu seinem Tod angehörte, prangerte er in brillanten Reden das autokratische Regime des Kaisers an. Mit diesem mutigen Stuttgarter Rechtsanwalt, der die satirische Zeitschrift »Simplicissimus« in zahlreichen Zensur- und Beleidigungsprozessen verteidigte, verband Hermann Hesse eine lebenslange Freundschaft, von der ihre hier erstmals vorgelegte Korrespondenz Zeugnis ablegt. Steht zu Beginn ihres Dialogs noch die Literatur im Vordergrund, so dominiert nach Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs die Politik. Zu den Überraschungen dieses Briefwechsels zählen die Einblicke in Hermann Hesses Mitwirkung bei diplomatischen Geheimmissionen, die Conrad Haußmann in der Schweiz von 1915 bis Kriegsende mit Kontaktpersonen der Entente führte, um Deutschland einen rechtzeitigen und ehrenhaften Friedensschluß zu ermöglichen.

        The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.

Many Caribbean men's stories about their experiences migrating to Canada, settling in Toronto, finding jobs and travelling involved some contact with a cricket and social club. This book offers a unique contribution to black diaspora studies through showing sport as a means of allaying the pain of ageing in the diaspora, creating transnational social networks and marking ethnic boundaries on a local scale. The book also brings black diaspora analysis to sport research, and through a close look at what goes on before, during and after cricket matches provides insights into the dis-unities, contradictions and complexities of Afro-diasporic identity in multicultural Canada.
