Der Kompromiß ist unverzichtbares Mittel der Politik und an sich eine schöne und verdienstvolle Sache, zumal wenn es um Krieg und Frieden geht. Allerdings gibt es auch für Kompromisse moralische Grenzen. Werden diese verletzt, wird der Kompromiß selbst kompromittiert; er ist faul, er »stinkt« und kontaminiert den Frieden, den er vielleicht gestiftet hat. Das jedenfalls behauptet der renommierte israelische Philosoph Avishai Margalit in seinem neuen Buch. Aber welche Grenzen sind das? An welchem Punkt wird aus einem Kompromißfrieden ein ungerechter Friede? Was ist überhaupt ein gerechter Friede? Anders als der Begriff des gerechten Krieges hat die Frage nach dem gerechten Frieden bislang kaum Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen. Und auch dem Kompromiß als Kategorie politischen Denkens und Handelns wurde bislang wenig theoretische Beachtung geschenkt. Anhand zahlreicher historischer Beispiele – allen voran das Münchener Abkommen, die Konferenz von Jalta und die israelisch-palästinensischen Friedensverhandlungen – durchmißt Margalit das begriffliche Feld des politischen Kompromisses in all seinen Facetten und erschüttert bisweilen die Gewißheit, daß Frieden per se die richtige Lösung ist, gleichgültig, um welchen Preis er erkauft wurde. In souveräner Kombination aus anspruchsvoller philosophischer Analyse, historischer Betrachtung und politischer Urteilskraft erhellt er die Logik des Kompromisses und fördert dabei überraschende Einsichten zutage: über Krieg und Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und Fanatismus, über das Böse. Ein elegantes und wichtiges Buch.
