How can we reconfigure our picture of modern art after the postcolonial turn without simply adding regional art histories to the Eurocentric canon? Transmodern examines the global dimension of modern art by tracing the crossroads of different modernisms in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Featuring case studies in Indian modernism, the Harlem Renaissance and post-war abstraction, it demonstrates the significance of transcultural contacts between artists from both sides of the colonial divide. The book argues for the need to study non-western avant-gardes and Black avant-gardes within the west as transmodern counter-currents to mainstream modernism. It situates transcultural art practices from the 1920s to the 1960s within the framework of anti-colonial movements and in relation to contemporary transcultural thinking that challenged colonial concepts of race and culture with notions of syncretism and hybridity.

»Aldous Huxley«: Broch … ist völlig zu Haus auf der Spiegeloberfläche und agiert manchmal dort mit unfehlbarer Virtuosität. Es liegt an der doppelten Fähigkeit dieses Autors, seinem Vermögen, gleichzeitig zwei unvereinbare Welten zu zeichnen. Dieser Band legt eine Sammlung von 13 Novellen vor, die besten aus Brochs Gesamtwerk. Die früheste »Eine methodologische Novelle«, wurde 1917 geschrieben, die späteste, »Die Erzählung der Magd Zerline«, 1949. Die Besonderheit dieser Sammlung besteht in der erstmaligen Präsentation aller vorhandenen Tierkreisnovellen in ihrer Ursprungsfassung. Bisher unveröffentlicht ist die Novelle »Esperance«. Das Nachwort ist eine Einführung in das novellistische Werk Hermann Brochs. Der Kommentar referiert die textkritische Situation sämtlicher Novellen, die an einen Philosophen erinnern, »der gleichzeitig ein Künstler von außergewöhnlicher Bildung und Reinheit ist«.

This pioneering biography reveals the journey of a woman who experienced hardship and single-motherhood before the age of thirty but went on to publish a sequence of novels that are unique in the English language. Comyns turned her hand to many jobs in order to survive, from artist's model to restoring pianos. Hundreds of unpublished letters reveal an occasionally desperate but resourceful and witty woman whose complicated life ranged from enduring poverty when young to mixing with spivs, spies and high society. While working as a housekeeper in her mid-thirties, Comyns began transforming the bleak episodes of her life into compelling fictions streaked with surrealism and deadpan humour. The Vet's Daughter (1959), championed by Graham Greene, brought her fame, although her use of the gothic and macabre divided readers and reviewers. This biography not only excavates Comyns's life but also reclaims her fiction, providing a timely reassessment of her literary contribution. It sheds new light on a remarkable author who deftly captured the complexities of human life.

Marguerite Duras wurde am 4. April 1914 in der ehemaligen französischen Kolonie Gia Dinh, dem heutigen Vietnam als Marguerite Donnadieu geboren und starb am 3. März 1996 in Paris. Sie besuchte das Lycée Français in Saigon und machte 1931 Abitur. Ein Jahr später siedelte die Familie nach Paris um, wo sie an der Rechtswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Paris und an der École des Sciences Politiques studierte. Von 1935 bis 1941 arbeitete sie als Sekretärin im Ministère des Colonies. 1939 heiratete sie Robert Antelme. Beide waren ab 1940 in der Résistance aktiv. Antelme wurde später ins Konzentrationslager Dachau deportiert. 1943 erschien ihr Debütroman Les Impudents (Die Schamlosen) unter dem Pseudonym Marguerite Duras, welchem keine besondere Aufmerksamkeit in der Öffentlichkeit zuteil kam. Mit Un Barrage contre le Pacifique (Heiße Küste), das 1950 erschien, hatte Duras größeren Erfolg. Sie schrieb nicht nur Romane, sondern verfasste auch Theaterstücke und trat als Filmregisseurin in Erscheinung.

Politsprache sei immer darauf aus, einen Konsens zu suggerieren, Mehrheiten zu behaupten, Gegenmeinungen, anders Denkende und Sprechende zu vereinzeln, sagte die Dichterin Barbara Köhler einmal im Interview und dichtete: »Ich harre aus im Land und geh ihm fremd.« In der DDR geboren und aufgewachsen, begann sie früh, durch und über die Sprache Machtverhältnisse aufzulösen, das Feststehende aufzukündigen, die Bedeutungen aufzubrechen. »Uns ist kein Schnabel gewachsen: wir reden, wie uns der Mund gestopft wurde.« Dagegen schrieb sie an und ersann ihre Poetik der Sprachbefragung und der Spracherweiterung. So entstand über die Jahrzehnte ein dichterisches Werk, das in seiner Vielfalt und Intensität seinesgleichen sucht. Der Band SCHRIFTSTELLEN versammelt erstmals Poetisches aus Barbara Köhlers Haupt- und Nebenwerken – von Deutsches Roulette (1991) über Niemands Frau (2007) bis 42 Ansichten zu Warten auf den Fluss (2017), von Texten aus der DDR-Künstlerzeitschrift Anschlag (1985) bis zu letzten Veröffentlichungen in die horen (2020). Ebenso enthalten sind Schriftinstallationen, die den multimedialen Charakter ihres Werkes dokumentieren. Bislang Unveröffentlichtes aus dem Nachlass beschließt diesen Band.

Sie übertrug Belletristik, Lyrik und Essays verschiedener englischer und amerikanischer Autoren des 18. bis 20. Jahrhunderts ins Deutsche. Barbara Cramer-Nauhaus verstarb im März 2001 in Halle an der Saale.
