        Heribert Prantl, geboren 1953, ist Mitglied der Chefredaktion der Süddeutschen Zeitung und leitet dort das Ressort Innenpolitik. Für seine Stellungnahmen zu gesellschaftspolitischen Themen wurde er vielfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Geschwister-Scholl- und dem Kurt-Tucholsky-Preis. Erhard Eppler war einer der einflussreichsten Programmatiker der deutschen Sozialdemokratie. Als Minister für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit im Kabinett Willy Brandts begleitete er den politischen Aufbruch zu Beginn der siebziger Jahre. Auch nachdem er sich in den neunziger Jahren von seinen Ämtern zurückgezogen hatte, griff er publizistisch in aktuelle politische Debatten ein. Erhard Eppler wurde 1926 in Ulm geboren. Er studierte Deutsch, Englisch und Geschichte und promovierte im Jahr 1951. Bis 1961 arbeitete er als Lehrer, parallel dazu war er parteipolitisch aktiv: seit 1952 in der von Gustav Heinemann gegründeten Gesamtdeutschen Volkspartei, ab 1956 in der SPD, für die er 1961 in den Bundestag einzog. Kurt Georg Kiesinger berief ihn 1968 zum Minister für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit, einen Posten, den er auch unter Willy Brandt und Helmut Schmidt bis 1974 innehatte. Von 1973 bis 1992 leitete Eppler die Grundwertekommission der SPD, von 1973 bis 1989 war er (mit einer Unterbrechung in den Jahren 1982-1984) Mitglied im Präsidium seiner Partei. Eppler engagierte sich nicht nur in der Parteipolitik, sondern auch in der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland, in den Jahren 1989-1991 war er Präsident des Kirchentags. Seit seinem Rückzug aus der offiziellen Politik widmete sich Eppler dem Schreiben. Als 1992 Kavalleriepferde beim Hornsignal erschien, verortete Siegfried Unseld den Autor Eppler in der Tradition von Böll, Grass und Johnson: »Eppler stellt sich als Aufgabe seines Buches, unsere Freiheit wie auch unsere Gebundenheit gegenüber der Sprache wieder bewußt zu machen, eine Sprache zu finden, die den Gefahren, die drohen, angemessen ist.« Erhard Eppler starb am 21. Oktober 2019 im Alter von 92 Jahren in seiner Wahlheimat Schwäbisch Hall.

        Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are invaluable natural resources of use to human race, without which the survival of human/ animal race is incredible. There is an enormous diversity of plants which are put into medicinal, beauty care and culinary purposes. Cultivation of commercially important medicinal plants is in high demand as the global community is growing towards a green and herbal oriented approach. India as a country has thousands of years old traditional medicinal systems which rely solely on medicinal plants. There is a gradual loss of medicinal plants with the increasing demand of plant derived drugs. Majority of medicinal plants are still collected from the wild. This doesnt meet the demand and thereby pave ways to adulterants. The over extraction and ignorant activities cause biodiversity loss. Farm production of MAPs in these days is extremely vulnerable to underlying climate risk. Sustainable management of these resources requires urgent attention for environmental stability and improvement of livelihood. New income generating opportunities are opening up for rural populations and in particular for small-scale farmers as well as marginal farmers through MAPs cultivation. New generation are not well aware of the various uses of many plants to which it was put before. Thus there is an urgent need to spread the knowledge and conserve the wild populations of medicinal plant diversity in various forest areas of India. Considering the importance of the MAPs, an attempt was taken in this edited book to understand and highlight the role of MAPs in livelihood improvement and income generation through cultivation, conservation and utilisation. Most of the chapters in this book dealt with individual medicinal plants in detail. Two chapters have also been included on pests and diseases management of MAPs. Nowadays, IPR issues are more important. One chapter has been included on IPR issues on medicinal plants. A chapter also devoted on value addition of the medicinal plant products.

        Intercropping system is an age-old cropping system where two or more crops coexist for a significant time of their growth period. In the present context of negative impacts on crop productivity and soil fertility, a system approach in cropping has become more relevant. The book Intercropping System is divided into nine chapters that deal with the theory and practices of the intercropping system including recent research evidence. The first two chapters describe the overview of the intercropping system and complexity as well as the competitive relationship among component crops. The third chapter narrates the management options in the intercropping systems, while the fourth chapter highlights the multifaceted benefits of an intercropping system. Chapter 5 tells the suitability for the adoption of the intercropping system in organic agriculture. The sixth chapter describes how an intercropping system can ensure agricultural sustainability and some of the sustainable development Goals (SDGs). Chapter 7 illustrates the practice of alley cropping, a form of agroforestry, in resource-poor conditions. Legumes are considered an automatic choice in the intercropping system and hence, in the eighth chapter, the benefits of the inclusion of legumes as components have been described. Finally, in the ninth chapter, the performance of important crops in the intercropping system has been highlighted.

        In recent years India has made notable advances in the fisheries. Progresses made in refinements of vessels, new line materials and line-handling systems, preserving the catch, the availability of oceanographic-sensor equipments and the utilization of satellite technology to locate potential fishing grounds have greatly improved the fishing power of longline vessels. Post harvest technology of fish has evolved in the last one decade to a more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and quality upgrading technology. Since fresh fish can get spoiled very quickly, the development of technology for post-harvest preservation and methodology to convert fish to value added products have also become popular in recent times. Value addition helps in getting high price for the fishery products. There is a need to develop competent human resources in the field of post harvest management of fish and production of value added products from them. It is required to inculcate vocational and entrepreneurial skills in order to widen employment opportunities, particularly among rural youth and the disadvantaged sections of the society as well as to enable self employment.
