As human populations expand and demands upon natural resources increase, the need to manage the environments in which people live becomes more important but also more difficult. Land and water management is especially critical as the use of upstream watersheds can drastically affect large numbers of people living in downstream watersheds. An integrated approach that stresses both the importance of participatory planning and the institutional and technical constraints and opportunities is therefore necessary. The institutional and technical context for managing watersheds and river basins, including the involvement of both the public and private sectors, is also examined.

Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. Von Rungholt stand bis zum Beginn der Forschungen des Ethnologen Hans Peter Duerr nicht viel mehr fest, als daß es in einer Sturmflut des Jahres 1362 versunken war. Der Ethnologe erzählt in diesem Buch, wie er Rungholt lokalisierte und zu welch unglaublicher Entdeckung seine Studenten und er gelangten: Mitten im nordfriesischen Wattenmeer liegen die Überreste einer vorgeschichtlichen Stadt, die später unter dem Namen Rungholt zu einem Handelszentrum des Nordens aufstieg, bis sie in der Marcellusnacht 1362 unterging. Als Hans Peter Duerr im Sommer des Jahres 1992 mit seiner Familie ein Ferienhaus auf der nordfriesischen Insel Nordstrand bezieht, sieht er an einer Wand das Faksimile der Landkarte des Husumer Geographen Johannes Mejer: »Abriss Von Rungholte Und Seinen Kirchspielen Anno 1240«. Im Frühjahr 1994 mietet er ein altes Segelschiff, mit dem er und 23 Studenten und Mitarbeiter der Universität Bremen sich an der besagten Stelle im Watt zwischen Nordstrand und Pellworm trockenfallen lassen. In den folgenden zehn Jahren setzen sie ihre Recherchen fort. Sie stoßen unter anderem auf die Überbleibsel der aus Tuff- und Ziegelsteinen errichteten Stiftskirche Rungholts. Und eines Tages finden sie sich mit den Resten einer weit älteren Siedlung konfrontiert und machen einen unerwarteten Fund, der den Schluß erlaubt, daß die Nordseeküste – und damit Deutschland – nicht erst im 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. von Pytheas von Massilia, sondern bereits tausend Jahre früher entdeckt worden ist.
