Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762–1814) ist einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Philosophen gleichrangig neben Kant, Hegel, Marx, und er ist der Vater des deutschen Idealismus, von größtem Einfluß auf das Kultur- und Geistesleben im ausgehenden 18. und 19. Jahrhundert und die deutsche Klassik. Aber dennoch ist der Verfasser der bahnbrechenden »Wissenschaftslehre« und der »Reden an die deutsche Nation« bis heute ein weitgehend Unbekannter. Seiner Mitwelt machte es Fichte nicht leicht: nicht nur durch seine mitunter schroffe Art, die er, aus einfachsten Verhältnissen stammend, als Schutzwall um sich errichtet hatte; auch mit seiner neuartigen Ich-Philosophie, die kaum einer seiner Zeitgenossen verstand. Seine Parteinahme für die Französische Revolution und seine unbestechliche Haltung im sogenannten »Atheismusstreit« kosteten ihn seinen Lehrstuhl in Jena. Dank neuer Forschungen ist es nun möglich, in einer seit langem überfälligen großen, umfassenden Biographie Fichte als den zu zeigen, der er war: ein hochbegabter, kompromißlos loyaler, verletzlicher Mensch, dessen Leidenschaft das Denken war, seit ihn die Begegnung mit der Philosophie Kants zu sich selbst gebracht hatte.

District D is a collection of stories united through a common time period and location, from which gradually emerges a portrait of the author against the backdrop of “other shores,” on which his childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood passed. The book paints a self-critical portrait of the author in which one can discern the features of husbandry and cosmopolitanism, pettiness and magnanimity, and much else. Simultaneously, it paints a group portrait of a few dozen more or less registered residents of the aforementioned Cherkasy district with their more or less successful attempts at surviving the unexpected transition from post-soviet to newly independent Ukraine. According to the author, District D served as therapy for his own traumatic experiences because he wrote it while serving in the war: “I would write it out of me and would feel better; I escaped from that war and those experiences into writing.”
