        Auf der Suche nach einem neuen Wohnsitz bereiste Rainer Maria Rilke im Sommer 1919 auch den Kanton Wallis, wo er sich nur wenige Jahre später dauerhaft niederließ. Von Anfang an, so bezeugen es zahlreiche Briefe, war Rilke eingenommen von dem breiten, von Hochgebirgsketten flankierten Tal. »Welches Land«, schrieb er 1921, »hat so viele Einzelheiten in so großem Zusammenhang; es ist wie der Schlußsatz einer Beethoven-Symphonie.« Und im selben Jahr heißt es in einem anderen Brief: »Dieses Wallis … ist eine unvergleichliche Landschaft.« Im Spätsommer 1924 entstand in französischer Sprache der Zyklus der Quatrains Valaisans, der Walliser Vierzeiler. In ihrer Übertragung realisieren Gerhard Falkner und Nora Matocza den konsequenten Endreim des Originals erstmals auch in deutscher Sprache.

        Interweaving myths in Shakespeare and his contemporaries

        This volume proposes new insights into the uses of classical mythology by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, focusing on interweaving processes in early modern appropriations of myth. Its 11 essays show how early modern writing intertwines diverse myths and plays with variant versions of individual myths that derive from multiple classical sources, as well as medieval, Tudor and early modern retellings and translations. Works discussed include poems and plays by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe and others. Essays concentrate on specific plays including The Merchant of Venice and Dido Queen of Carthage, tracing interactions between myths, chronicles, the Bible and contemporary genres. Mythological figures are considered to demonstrate how the weaving together of sources deconstructs gendered representations. New meanings emerge from these readings, which open up methodological perspectives on multi-textuality, artistic appropriation and cultural hybridity.

With this bold claim, this book seeks both to write the history of Bartolomé's extant filmography, and speculative about censored and un-filmed work, thereby fashioning a new way of writing a feminist creative life in film. The first volume on this director to be written in English, The Cinema of Cecilia Bartolomé is also the first volume on the director published in any language for over twenty years. By focusing on Spanish-language cinema of the 1960s-1990s, the period when feminism, like democracy, was re-born and seemingly consolidated in Spain, the study brings historical depth and transnational reach to current debates in the wake of #MeToo.

        September 2001, Pierre Michons Mutter liegt im Sterben, der Sohn „betet“ für sie: ein Villon-Gedicht, die „Ballade der Gehenkten“. Auch nach der Geburt seines Kindes hat er „gebetet“: ein Gedicht von Victor Hugo, „Der Schlaf des Boas“. Solche Verse, resümiert Michon in seinem autobiographisch erklärenden Essay „Der Himmel ist ein sehr großer Mann“, „… beruhigen die Leiche, helfen dem Kind, auf seinen Beinen zu stehen. Wahrscheinlich ist das die Funktion der Poesie.“ Auch in den weiteren Essays des Bandes geht es um nichts anderes als die ebenso erhabene wie lächerliche Berufung der Kunst. Michon schreibt über Samuel Beckett, Gustave Flaubert, Ibn Manglî, William Faulkner und eben über sich selbst – so pathetisch und sarkastisch, resolut und poetisch, wie nur er das kann.
