        Zehn Milliarden

        by Stephen Emmott, Anke Burger

        Für die Herstellung eines Burgers braucht man 3000 Liter Wasser. Wir produzieren in zwölf Monaten mehr Ruß als im gesamten Mittelalter und fliegen allein in diesem Jahr sechs Billionen Kilometer. Unsere Enkel werden sich die Erde mit zehn Milliarden Menschen teilen müssen. Haben wir überhaupt eine Zukunft? Stephen Emmott, Leiter eines von Microsoft aufgebauten Forschungslabors und Professor in Oxford, schafft mit 'Zehn Milliarden' etwas Einzigartiges: Das erste Mal zeichnet ein Experte ein aktuelles und für jeden verständliches Bild unserer Lage. Kein theoretischer Überbau, kein moralischer Zeigefinger. Die nackten Fakten sind die dramatische Botschaft dieses Buches – und Emmott bringt sie auf besondere Weise zum Sprechen: in wenigen, klug arrangierten Sätzen und mit Bildern, die einem den Atem rauben. Das ist drastisch, doch viel drastischer ist, was wir der Erde angetan haben und immer noch antun. Und damit uns. 'Zehn Milliarden' ist der letzte Weckruf. Wir dürfen ihn nicht überhören.

        The silence of Barbara Synge

        by Bill McCormack

        'The silence of Barbara Synge' provides a fascinating companion volume to Bill McCormack's acclaimed 'Fool of the family' (2000), a biography of the playwright J.M. Synge (1871-1909). Taking the alledged death of Mrs John Hatch (née Synge) in 1767 as a focal point, this book explores the varied strands of the Synge family tree in eighteenth and nineteenth century Ireland. Key events in the family's history are carefully documented, including a suicide in 1769 which is echoed in an early Synge play, the effects of the famine which influenced 'The playboy of the western world' in 1907, and the behaviour of Francis Synge at the time of the union. 'The silence of Barbara Synge' is a unique work of cultural enquiry, combining archival research, literary criticism, and religious and medical history to pull the strands together and relate them to the family's literary descendent J.M. Synge. ;

Dahl, Lidia Andrades Caldito, Haywantee Ramkissoon, Vincent Magnini, Øystein Jensen, Line Mathisen, Akan Yanik, Tor Korneliussen, Xiaojuan Yu, Bruce Prideaux, Lena Mossberg, Ossi Pesämaa, Young-Souk Lee

        As the field of tourism grows in maturity and scientific sophistication, it is important to fully understand the breadth and depth of vacation experience value. Current research delivers a multitude of approaches to value creation, represented here as a set of definitions, perspectives, and interpretations of how tourists, as customers, create value alone and with others. Providing an analytical and systematic clarification of the approaches, this book suggests an understanding of the differences, offering new and practical knowledge for tourism scholars and professionals to highlight the relevance of the concept to firms and organizations. Including a framework to distinguish among key resources or antecedents of customer value, this book also considers consumer behaviour and factors affecting value creation from physiological and psychological perspectives. Concluding with a summary of the areas for future research, it is a valuable resource for researchers of tourism, leisure and recreation. ; This book evaluates vacation experience value, as it is created and co-created by the tourist engaging in the experience, for himself, other tourists and the tourism firm. Providing a framework to distinguish among key resources or antecedents of customer value, this book also considers consumer behaviour. ; I: Preface1: Co-creation of Tourist Experience: Scope, Definition and Structure2: Dynamic Drivers of Tourist Experiences3: Tourist Experience Value: Tourist Experience and Life Satisfaction4: Conceptualization of Value Co-creation in the Tourism Context5: Why, Oh Why, Oh Why, Do People Travel Abroad?6: Revisiting Self-congruity Th eory in Travel and Tourism7: Moving People: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding How Visitor Experiences can be enhanced by Mindful Attention to Interest8: Co-creation of Experience Value: A Tourist Behaviour Approach9: Authenticity as a Value Co-creator of Tourism Experiences10: Experience Co-creation Depends on Rapport-building: Training Implications for the Service Frontline11: Approaches for the Evaluation of Visitor Experiences at Tourist Attractions12: Storytelling in a Co-creation Perspective13: Tourist Information Search: A DIY Approach to Creating Experience Value14: Co-creation of Value and Social Media: How?15: Prices and Value in Co-produced Hospitality and Tourism Experiences16: Value Creation: A Tourism Mobilities Perspective17: Guide Performance: Co-created Experiences for Tourist Immersion18: Value Creation and Co-creation in Tourist Experiences: An East Asian Cultural Knowledge Framework Approach19: Challenges and Future Research Directions

        Local government today

        by J. Chandler, Bill Jones

        Local government today provides a comprehensive analysis of the structure, finance, management and democratic framework for local government in Britain. This new edition has been substantially rewritten to encompass the many changes to the structure and function of the system since 2000, including developments flowing from the 2007 Local Government Act. The study discusses how, during the Blair years, local governments came to be seen once again as centrally important institutions within Britain's political system. However, they are not seen as organisations that can function as separate agencies, undertaking all their duties 'in-house'. They are now required to work in partnership with the private, public and voluntary sectors to deliver local services and represent local interests. It is further argued that, for the first time in over a century, the barriers between civil servants and senior local government officers are being eroded as central government begins to incorporate leading local government officials into its decision-making processes. This established textbook also offers a comparative focus by showing how the British system differs from the structures for local governance in Western Europe and the United States. ;

        Russian politics today

        by Michael Waller, Bill Jones

        This introductory text, written by an established authority on communist and post-communist politics, describes how Vladimir Putin has turned to those with backgrounds in the military and security structures to provide stability in today's Russian Federation, following the democratising reforms of Gorbachev and the ensuing instability of the Yeltsin presidency. Against the background of an increasing authoritarianism, which has restored features of the Soviet political system, it examines the attempts by social and economic groups to assert themselves against the state using embryonic democratic forms that fall far short of pluralism. The book's fourteen chapters offer an exceptionally broad coverage. It will appeal to first- and second-year students in higher education, but its deliberately accessible style will also make it attractive to sixth-form students and the general reader. ;

        Making sense of the Bayeux Tapestry

        Readings and reworkings

        by Anna Henderson, Bill Sherman

        This book aims to make sense of the Bayeux Tapestry by bringing together answers to a number of questions which this famous hanging presents to the viewer. How did the embroiderers organise the stitching of the Bayeux Tapestry? Are its limited colours used with greater sophistication than viewers have recognised? What do we know of the Tapestry's supporting cast: naked figures in the margins and clerics present at events in the main register? Can we learn anything about the original purpose of the Tapestry from detailed examination of Bayeux Cathedral's 1476 Inventory, the first known reference to the Tapestry's existence? This book combines up-to-the-minute research with an introduction that draws on the contributors' personal observations in order to interrogate the Tapestry's enduring value. Bringing together contributions from leading specialists and newer voices in the field, it will be essential reading for students and scholars of the Bayeux Tapestry, medieval art and culture. ;
