Er plädiert für eine konsequente, radikale Historisierung, die einen Weg weist, wie wir uns in unserer Geschichte selbst vergewissern und im Relativen zurechtfinden können.

Humans write history, but nature and coincidence often play a significant part in making history. The weather, volcanoes, celestial bodies, pathogens: all of them can influence historical events. In 413 BC, a lunar eclipse contributed to the defeat of the Athenians by Syracuse. In 1802, Napoleon’s soldiers on Saint-Domingue, the Haiti of today, were carried off in their thousands by yellow fever; the slave revolt that the troops had been sent to suppress succeeded, and the island declared itself independent in 1804. Nature not only makes history, it can also contribute to the understanding of history. For example, the route that the Carthaginians took over the Alps was only revealed recently by the discovery of ancient manure – not too surprising since Hannibal was accompanied by an estimated 10,000 horses. Sebastian Jutzi relates these and many other (hi)stories in a knowledgeable, entertaining and informative way – a treasure trove for anyone who wants to get to know history from an “unusual” perspective.

Seit dem 6. März 2015 sendet der Deutschlandfunk jeden Freitag die Sendereihe »Koran erklärt«. Bis Dezember 2016 erläuterten darin 51 islamische Theologen und Islamwissenschaftler aus acht Ländern 84 kurze Texte aus dem Koran. Diese Texte sind im vorliegenden Band versammelt. Ergänzt werden diese Auslegungen durch ein Vorwort von Willi Steul, dem Intendanten von Deutschlandradio, sowie drei Hintergrundessays: Thorsten Gerald Schneiders gibt einen Überblick über die Geschichte der Koranauslegung, Angelika Neuwirth problematisiert die »Koranexegese zwischen Theologie und Orientalistik«, und Sebastian Engelbrecht rekonstruiert »Die Beteiligung des Islams am Rundfunk in Deutschland«. Das Buch bietet Information und Aufklärung über den Koran. Es ermöglicht einen Zugang zur heiligen Schrift einer Weltreligion und lädt zu einer differenzierten Betrachtung des Korans ein. Das sind Aufgaben des öffentlichrechtlichen Rundfunks – gerade in Zeiten, in denen Ängste und Emotionen zu Vorurteilen und Ausgrenzung führen.

Prekäre Wissenschaft in Deutschland

Seit 2007 prekarisiert das Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz Arbeitsbedingungen und Berufsaussichten des akademischen Mittelbaus: Das Gros der Wissenschaftler:innen hangelt sich von einem befristeten Job zum nächsten, und wer nach zwölf Jahren keine feste Stelle hat, fällt endgültig aus dem System heraus. Als 2021 ein Video des Forschungsministeriums in den Fokus gerät, in dem am Beispiel der fiktiven Biologin »Hanna« die vermeintlichen Vorzüge des Gesetzes gepriesen werden, lancieren Amrei Bahr, Kristin Eichhorn und Sebastian Kubon den Hashtag #IchBinHanna. Binnen weniger Stunden machen zahllose Wissenschaftler:innen ihrem Ärger Luft. Sie schildern die Auswirkungen der Prekarität auf ihr Leben, berichten von Überlastung und Depressionen. Die Medien greifen das Thema auf, und »Hanna« schafft es wenig später sogar in den Bundestag. In ihrer Streitschrift legen die Initiator:innen dar, welche Folgen das »WissZeitVG« für Forschende und Studierende, aber auch für den Wissenschaftsstandort Deutschland und unsere Gesellschaft insgesamt hat. Sie resümieren die Erfahrungsberichte unter #IchBinHanna und präsentieren ihre Forderungen für bessere Arbeitsbedingungen in Forschung und Lehre.

An Island Perspective

Islands are special places; they can be havens for unique plants and animals and refuges for wildlife. This book investigates the biogeography of butterfly species over the British islands, particularly the factors that influence their presence on the islands and that have made each island's butterfly fauna distinctive. The book contains a full log of records of species on the islands and much supporting information. The first three chapters set the scene, illustrating the basics of island biogeography theory, their changing circumstances during the current Holocene interglacial, and studies of natural history of British butterflies that mark the islands as the most intensively studied region for wildlife in the world. The book advances by increasing resolution downscale from a European continental perspective, through patterns and changes on the British mainland, a comparison of the two dominant islands of Britain and Ireland, to a close inspection of the dynamics of species on the multitude of offshore islands. Detailed investigations include contrasts in species' richness on the islands and then of the incidences of each species. Case studies highlight the continual turnover of species on islands. Attention is then given to evolutionary changes since the time that glaciers enveloped Europe. A powerful message is conveyed for the maintenance of butterfly species on the smaller British islands now experiencing population losses at a rate unprecedented since the spread of the last ice sheets: the incontrovertible importance of maintaining populations of species on nearby mainland sources for islands as pools for future migrants.
