Bei dem hier vorliegenden Band handelt es sich um eine von Eva Gillies gekürzte und eingeleitete Ausgabe des zuerst 1937 erschienenen großen Werkes »Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande«, das den seither unbestrittenen Ruf des bedeutenden englischen Sozialanthropologen E.E. Evans-Pritchard (1902-1973) begründet hat. Diese Monographie gehört zu den umfangreichen Publikationen Evans-Pritchards, die eine Frucht der intensiven ethnologischen Felduntersuchungen darstellen, die er in den zwanziger und dreißiger Jahren im damals Anglo-Ägyptischen Sudan unternommen hat und in deren Verlauf er neben den Zande u. a. auch die Gesellschaften der Nuer, der Anuak und der Luo studiert hat. Evans-Pritchards Arbeit weist die innere Logik des Glaubens an Hexerei und Magie auf, eines Glaubens, der in der Vorstellungswelt und der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit vieler afrikanischer Gesellschaften einen festen Platz hat. »Hexerei, Orakel und Magie bei den Zande« ist bahnbrechend für den Versuch geworden, fremde Denksysteme auf ihre eigene Logik hin zu untersuchen und ihre Grundvoraussetzungen explizit zu machen. Seit den fünfziger Jahren beeinflußt Evans-Pritchards Werk neben Ethnologen zunehmend auch Philosophen, Soziologen und Theologen. In ihrem Vorwort umreißt Eva Gillies die heutige Bedeutung des Buchs von Evans-Pritchard und beschreibt die soziale und politische Organisation der Zande um 1930, um dem Leser die Einordnung in den historischen Kontext zu ermöglichen.

Marcel Mauss (1872–1950), Soziologe und Ethnologe, lehrte an der École Pratique des Hautes Études, bevor er Professor am Collège de France wurde. Zusammen mit Émile Durkheim begründete er die Zeitschrift L’Année Sociologique und zusammen mit Lucien Lévy-Bruhl und Paul Rivet das Institut d’Ethnologie. Von ihm liegt im Suhrkamp Verlag außerdem vor: Die Gabe. Form und Funktion des Austauschs in archaischen Gesellschaften (stw 743) Eva Moldenhauer, 1934 in Frankfurt am Main geboren, war seit 1964 als Übersetzerin tätig. Sie übersetzte Literatur und wissenschaftliche Schriften französischsprachiger Autoren ins Deutsche, u.a. von Claude Simon, Jorge Semprún, Marcel Mauss, Mircea Eliade, Gilles Deleuze und Lévi-Strauss. Sie wurde mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Helmut-M.-Braem-Übersetzerpreis und dem Paul-Celan-Preis. Eva Moldenhauer verstarb am 22. April 2019.

It was work for Mike Sullivan–a flying job like the ones he'd done most of his life in many parts of the world–ferrying people, medicine, crops, supplies and almost anything else you can think of among the isolated jungle villages of Guatemala. Life in the farming co-ops there was simple, peaceful, and good, based on bedrocks of family, community, and faith.Then the repression began. A failed attempt at a coup had led to continued fighting between rebels and government, though in areas far from the almost-utopian Ixcan region. U.S. military and CIA intervention helped defeat the insurgency, but the social inequalities that had led to the movement remained, and the revolution went underground. The Guatemalan army, searching everywhere for those who opposed it, increased its control over the isolated jungle area. Co-op directors, teachers, catechists, and then anyone suspected of being one of or assisting the guerrillas was selectively "disappeared." The army turned to a scorched-earth policy, killing animals, burning crops, uprooting fruit trees, destroying towns, massacring their people. Throughout the Ixcan, those who survived fled. Some returned to their original mountain villages, others crossed the border into Mexico, and a third group survived for sixteen years hiding in the jungle–men, women, and children. Primeval growth took over the land as the war with the guerrilla movement raged on to encompass the entire nation.When finally peace accords were signed, the people of the Ixcan returned. Homes were rebuilt, land reclaimed, the area thrived again. But sixteen years were lost, along with countless lives. For Mike Sullivan, who had returned there when his help was needed, the story of those years–of how the people of the Ixcan survived, and of the many who didn't–was one that had to be told. In three visits, he conducted the interviews that form this book, talking with the villagers he'd known long before. At first, they spoke hesitantly, then with the flood force of vivid memory, telling of their first arrival at the Ixcan, the lives they'd made, and the years of the repression and worse. Their stories are gripping, fascinating, painful–but most of all, deeply human as we witness their struggle to survive and feel the force of the simple values that ultimately carried them through to a new and better life.

Sein zweites Theaterstück, Saved (Gerettet), provozierte einen der größten Skandale der britischen Theatergeschichte: Das Stück wurde kurz nach seiner Premiere im November 1965 im Royal Court Theatre aufgrund von expliziter Gewaltdarstellung von der Zensur verboten. Die sich anschließende Diskussion um Freiheit der Kunst bewirkte 1968 das Ende der britischen Theaterzensur. Große Erfolge wurden Anfang der 1970er Jahre seine Lear-Bearbeitung und das Stück The Sea (Die See). In den kommenden Jahrzehnten zahlreiche Stücke, Opernlibretti für Hans Werner Henze, Arbeit an Theatern, für den Film (u.a. Mitarbeit am Drehbuch zu Antonionis Film Blow up) und das Fernsehen. John Polidori's novella The Vampyre (1819) is perhaps 'the most influential horror story of all time' (Frayling). Polidori's Lord Ruthven was thus the ancestor of the vampire as we know it. This collection explores the genesis of Polidori's vampire. It then tracks his bloodsucking progeny across the centuries and maps his disquieting legacy. Texts discussed range from the Romantic period, including the fascinating and little-known The Black Vampyre (1819), through the melodramatic vampire theatricals in the 1820s, to contemporary vampire film, paranormal romance, and science fiction. Four Saints in Three Acts by Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson was a major avant-garde phenomenon of the 1930s, an experimental opera that nonetheless achieved remarkable popular success. Photography was a key element of that success, but its complex roles in the construction, representation and dissemination of the opera have hitherto received little critical attention. The photographic recording of the all-African American cast in particular affords a unique insight into the complexities of Four Saints in relation to the Harlem Renaissance and the New York avant-gardes of the time. This book, published in collaboration with The Photographers' Gallery, London, presents a wide selection of photographs of the cast, performances, and other material - many images reproduced for the first time - alongside essays by an international range of scholars exploring different aspects of the opera, including dance, fashion, music, and avant-garde writing, as well as photography.
