Die Anerkennung des Phänomens eines Vorsorgestaates erzwingt eine neue Analyse der Moderne, die denjenigen Untersuchungen widerspricht, die in der zunehmenden Technisierung der Welt und einem damit einhergehenden Sinnverlust ein Überhandnehmen des Nihilismus zu erkennen glauben. Die Perspektive, die der französische Philosoph François Ewald in diesem Band einnimmt, eröffnet einen völlig neuen Blick auf die Entwicklung des modernen Staates. Dies geschieht im Sinne einer Beschreibung sogenannter »Praktiken der Verantwortung«. Anhand der genauen Rekonstruktion eines Perspektivenwandels auf den »Arbeitsunfall« zeigt Ewald, wie die Kategorie des Risikos zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einer politischen wird. Dieser Wandel hat schließlich die Gründung einer Reihe von Versicherungen und Versicherungsanstalten zur Folge.
