        An Francesco Dionigi von Borgo san Sepolcro in Paris. Die Besteigung des Mont Ventoux. Mit farbigen Fotografien von Constantin Beyer

        by Francesco Petrarca, Constantin Beyer, Paul Stern, Hans Nachod, Horst Nalewski

        Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) soll als einer der ersten den höchsten und eindrucksvollsten Berg der Provence, den von Winden umwehten Mont Ventoux, bestiegen haben. Der Brief, in dem er seinen Aufstieg schildert, ist ob des neuen Naturgefühls, das sich in ihm ausspricht, berühmt geworden.Rainer Maria Rilke war Petrarcas Brief bei einem Aufenthalt in der Provence zum Ereignis geworden durch die in ihm formulierte, auf Augustinus zurückgehende Erkenntnis, dass ein noch so reiches »Außen« übertroffen werde von der Tiefendimension unseres Inneren. Petrarcas Aufstieg nachvollzogen hat ein Urenkel Rilkes, der Fotograf Constantin Beyer.

        Der Tod in den Weltkulturen und Weltreligionen

        by Constantin Barloewen

        Kaum ein Thema hat die Menschen zu allen Zeiten, in allen Kulturen und Zivilisationsstufen so intensiv beschäftigt wie das Sterben. Das Bewußtsein unserer Sterblichkeit hat die menschliche Einbildungskraft seit der Vor- und Frühgeschichte angeregt und in Mythologie, Kunst, Architektur, Religion, Philosophie und in der Folklore der verschiedenen Kulturen auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise Ausdruck gefunden. Dieses wohl einzigartige Buch behandelt das Thema erstmals auf ebenso umfassende wie tiefgreifende Weise: Die bedeutendsten Gelehrten der verschiedenen Weltkulturen und Religionen haben aus ihrer jeweiligen Perspektive darüber nachgedacht, welche kulturelle, mythische und religiöse Tradition sich hinter der Auffassung und Verarbeitung des Todes verbirgt. Eingeleitet wird der Band durch einen ausführlichen kulturvergleichenden Essay des Herausgebers Constantin von Barloewen.

        Mensch ohne Welt

        Eine Soziologie spätmoderner Vergesellschaftung

        by Alexandra Schauer

        »Die Menschen können sich heute eher ein Ende der Welt als ein Ende des Kapitalismus vorstellen«, lautet ein oft zitierter Befund. Alexandra Schauer geht dieser spätmodernen Malaise in ihrem überaus materialreichen Buch auf den Grund. In drei historischen Rekonstruktionsbewegungen zeigt sie am Wandel der Zeiterfahrung, der Öffentlichkeit und der Stadt, wie es kam, dass die Welt als Ort wechselseitiger Verständigung und gemeinsamen Handelns an Bedeutung und die für die politische Moderne einst so zentrale Idee der Gestaltbarkeit von Gesellschaft an Strahlkraft eingebüßt hat. Das hat schwerwiegende Konsequenzen für das vergesellschaftete Individuum der Gegenwart, das sich in der von ihm hervorgebrachten Wirklichkeit nicht mehr aus- und wiedererkennt.

        In Strange Countries: Middle English Literature and its Afterlife

        Essays in memory of J. J. Anderson

        by Anke Bernau, David Matthews

        These essays by senior scholars in medieval studies celebrate the career of J.J. Anderson, editor, critic, and co-founder of the Manchester Medieval Literature and Culture series, who taught in medieval studies at the University of Manchester for forty years. The essays are rooted in medieval literature but frequently range beyond the confines of the Middle Ages. They reflect the breadth of Anderson's own scholarly interests, especially in drama and Arthurian literature. There is a particular focus on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl, poems which preoccupied him throughout his scholarly life. There are also new reconsiderations of La?amon's Brut, Mirk's Festial, the Passion plays, and the manuscripts of the Pore Caitif. Moving beyond the traditional purview of medieval literature, several contributors trace the afterlives of medieval themes in later literature. These essays include a consideration of the twinned trajectories of the medieval heroes Robin Hood and King Arthur from medieval literature to modern television, a comparison of La?amon's Brut and Tennyson's Idylls of the King, and a recreation of the Bishop Blase procession which took place in industrial Bradford. Contributors are Rosamund Allen, Ralph Elliott, Alexandra Johnston, Stephen Knight, Peter Meredith, Susan Powell, Gillian Rudd, Alan Shelston, and Kalpen Trivedi. ;

        Robust health care systems are paramount for the health, security, and prosperity of people and countries as a whole. This book provides for the first time a chronicle of the struggle for, and eventual success of, universal health coverage (UHC) in Tanzania. Beginning with an introduction to primary health care in the country, from its historical foundations to the major milestones of implementation, this book then considers stewardship of this important aspect of health systems over time. Written in a way to allow the application of lessons learned to other countries' contexts, this book covers: - Policy and governance issues such as leadership, human resources, and financing of health systems; - Practical aspects of health system delivery, including supply chains, community care, new technologies, and the integration of services for particular population groups; - The impact and mitigation of global events on health systems, such as resilience and preparedness in the light of disease outbreaks or climate change, and social, commercial, and political influences. Concluding with a look to the future, forecasting the changes and new solutions needed to adapt to a changing world, this book is a valuable reference for policy makers, global health practitioners, health system managers, researchers, students, and all those with an interest in primary health care and reforms - both in Tanzania and beyond.

        Real and Reel

        The education of a film critic

        by Brian McFarlane

        From a little before ten years of age Brian McFarlane became addicted to stories told on the screen, and the mere fact that he had difficulty in getting to see the films he wanted - or any for that matter - only made them seem more alluring. But it wasn't just seeing the films that mattered: he also wanted, and quite soon needed, to be writing about them and these obsessions have been part of his life for the next sixty-odd years. Real and reel is a light-hearted and but deeply felt account of a lifetime's addiction. It is one particular writer and critic's story, but it will strike sparks among many others. Though many other interests have kept Brian McFarlane's life lively, nothing else has exerted such a long-standing grip on the author's imagination as film. Editor of the Encyclopaedia of British Cinema, co-editor of Manchester University Press's British Film Makers series, and author of over a dozen critical works on film and adaptation, Brian McFarlane's autobiographical Real and reel can also be read as a biography of the subject of Film Studies itself. ;

        K u n s t / A n g s t     EIN ÜBERLEBENSHANDBUCH FÜR DEN KÜNSTLER Von DAVID BAYLES & TED ORLAND   Worum geht es bei Kunst? Wohin bewegt sie sich? Welche Widerstände gibt es?   DAS SIND DIE FRAGEN, AUF DIE ES ANKOMMT, wiederkehrende Fragen, die sich in jedem Stadium der künstlerischen Entwicklung stellen. Sie sind der Ursprung für dieses Kompendium scharfsinniger Beobachtungen.   Kunst & Angst erforscht, wie Kunst geschaffen wird, die Gründe, warum Kunstwerke oft nicht entstehen und die Art der Schwierigkeiten, die so viele Künstler dazu bringt, auf der Wegstrecke aufzugeben. Dieses Buch handelt davon, was du fühlst, wenn du in deinem Atelier oder im Lehrsaal sitzt, du an der Töpferscheibe oder am Keyboard, vor der Staffelei oder hinter deiner Kamera stehst und du versuchst, das Werk, das dir bestimmt ist, zu schaffen. Es geht darum, dass du deine Zukunft in die Hand nimmst, den Freien Willen über Vorherbestimmung, die Wahl vor den Zufall stellst. Es geht darum, dein eigenes Werk zu finden.
