Aus dem Leben von Gesine Cresspahl nieder. Deren erste ›Lieferung‹ erschien 1970. Die Teile zwei und drei schlossen sich 1971 und 1973 an. 1974 zog Uwe Johnson nach Sheerness-on Sea in der englischen Grafschaft Kent an der Themsemündung. Im Gegenzug schrieb Raddatz: "Lieber großer Uwe Johnson", "Lieber große Uwe" oder, sehr häufig, Uwe Johnson/ Fritz J. Raddatz Der Briefwechsel "Lieber Groß-Uwe". In diesen Benennungen drückt sich eine Vertrautheit aus, die nicht zu unterschätzen ist, zumal Johnson als der Schwierige, als der Unnahbare galt. Dieser Briefwechsel, beginnend im August 1966, endend im August 1983, zwischen zwei ehemaligen Bürgern der DDR, gehorcht nur scheinbar den vorgegebenen Rollen der beiden: hier der Schriftsteller, dort der Verleger, Lektor, Herausgeber und Kritiker. Da die Korrespondenzpartner wissen, daß Literatur nicht im gesellschaftsfreien Raum stattfindet, sie doch gleichwohl dazu Distanz benötigt, um ihre Wahrheit präsentieren zu können, thematisieren ihre Briefe alle Aspekte der Literatur: ihre Entstehungsbedingungen, die Technik des Schreibens, die Kritik - nicht zuletzt die Politik. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, Australian settler colonists mobilised their unique settler experiences to develop their own vision of what 'empire' was and could be. Reinterpreting their histories and attempting to divine their futures with a much heavier concentration on racialized visions of humanity, white Australian settlers came to believe that their whiteness as well as their Britishness qualified them for an equal voice in the running of Britain's imperial project. Through asserting their case, many soon claimed that, as newly minted citizens of a progressive and exemplary Australian Commonwealth, white settlers such as themselves were actually better suited to the modern task of empire. Such a settler political cosmology with empire at its center ultimately led Australians to claim an empire of their own in the Pacific Islands, complete with its own, unique imperial governmentality.
