Lessons from the Asian Green Revolution

Why can Asia now feed its rapidly growing population, but Africa continues to experience famine? This book is the outcome of a three-year project coordinated by a group of Swedish researchers with collaborating scholars from Africa and Asia. It provides a comparative study between Asian agricultural development during the Green Revolution in food production and the current problematic agricultural situation in sub-Saharan Africa. Based on case studies of eight African and eight Asian countries (focusing on the early part of the Green Revolution), this book presents a causal and explanatory model of Asian green revolutions. It discusses why such progress has been made in Asia, but has not yet occurred in Africa. It also examines the implications of the case studies for future development in Africa.

During the past five years, the PETRRA (Poverty Elimination Through Rice Research Assistance) project has explored the development of innovative extension mechanisms through a learning-by-doing process with multiple service providers. Partnerships linked government, non-government and private sectors as appropriate. Topics addressed by the project include seed production and distribution systems, crop and soil fertility management, postharvest technologies, mobile pumps, aromatic rice and integrated rice-duck farming. The methods used include women-led group extension, whole family approach, participatory video, Going Public and picture songs. This book examines these approaches to extension and assesses their potential for replicability and scaling-up. It includes four thematic sections with people-centred case studies and a conclusion with practical applications of the transaction cost theory.

Die Fragilität der Dinge, die Bedrohtheit der Existenz und, als ihr Begrenzendes, das Unermeßliche, aus dem Alles aufsteigt, flüchtig aufglänzt, in dem es wieder versinkt – das ist die Erfahrung, aus der heraus Ungaretti nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zu dichten begonnen hat. Sie ist der Grundriß seines Dichtens geblieben.« Mit dieser Ankündigung erschien 1968 Paul Celans übersetzung von Giuseppe Ungarettis La terra promessa (1950) und Il taccuino del vecchio (1960) in einer zweisprachigen Ausgabe im Insel Verlag. Nach Ingeborg Bachmanns nur wenige Jahre älterer übersetzung (1961) trug Paul Celans Engagement entscheidend zur besonderen Stellung Giuseppe Ungarettis in Deutschland bei. Celans Übertragung ist in Ungarettis Werk auf besondere Weise eingegangen. In die Originalausgaben der Zyklen hat er, mit Ausnahme weniger eigenständiger Seiten, seine übersetzung hineingeschrieben, den gedruckten Text mit seiner handschriftlichen Arbeit unmittelbar konfrontiert. Den Faksimiles folgen Celans Übertragung nach dem Text der Erstausgabe, sein Briefwechsel mit der Lektorin des Insel Verlages, Anneliese Botond, die ganz unterschiedlich akzentuierten Pressestimmen und ein Nachwort, in dem die Geschichte der Übertragung dokumentiert und Celans übersetzungskonzept analysiert und bewertet wird.
