        Philosophie des Jazz

        by Daniel Martin Feige

        Was ist Jazz? Wie unterscheidet er sich von anderen Arten von Musik? Und inwieweit handelt es sich bei ihm um einen besonders interessanten Gegenstand für das Nachdenken über ästhetische Fragen? Das vorliegende Buch stellt die erste philosophische Auseinandersetzung dar, die sich dem Jazz widmet. Daniel Martin Feige geht darin der Frage des Verhältnisses zwischen Jazz und europäischer Kunstmusik nach und untersucht den Zusammenhang zwischen Musiker und Tradition sowie zwischen Werk und Improvisation. Dabei lässt er sich von der originellen These leiten, dass erst im Jazz zentrale Aspekte musikalischer Praxis überhaupt explizit gemacht werden, die in der Tradition europäischer Kunstmusik implizit bleiben.

        Die Kunst und die Künste

        Ein Kompendium zur Kunsttheorie der Gegenwart

        by Georg W. Bertram, Stefan Deines, Daniel Martin Feige

        In welchem Verhältnis stehen Künste wie Literatur, Malerei und Musik, aber auch Architektur, Design und Computerspiel zueinander? Gibt es eine verbindende Einheit oder ist jede Kunst aus sich heraus zu begreifen? Die Reflexion über Einheit und Pluralität der Künste führt zu Kernfragen der Kunsttheorie nach dem Wesen der Kunst, nach den Medien und den Funktionen der Künste sowie zum zentralen Thema, ob die klassische Konstellation der Künste sich in der Nachmoderne aufgelöst hat. Dieses Kompendium bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die Debatte und versammelt klassische Beiträge, u. a. von Theodor. W. Adorno, Clement Greenberg und Jean-Luc Nancy, sowie aktuelle Perspektiven, u. a. von Lydia Goehr, Gertrud Koch, Juliane Rebentisch, Peter Osborne und Martin Seel.

        Rescaling the state

        Devolution and the geographies of economic governance

        by Mark Goodwin, Martin Jones, Rhys Jones

        Rescaling the state provides a theoretically-informed and empirically-rich account of the process of devolution undertaken in the UK since 1997, focusing in particular on the devolution of economic governance. Using case studies from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, the book examines the purported reasons for, and the unintended consequences of, devolution. As well as comparing policy and practice across the four devolved territories, the book also explores the pitfalls and instances of good practice associated with devolution in the UK. Rescaling the state is an important text for all social scientists - particularly political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists and human geographers - interested in the devolution of power in the UK and, indeed, all instances of contemporary state restructuring. It is also a significant book for all policy-makers interested in understanding the increasing complexity of the policy landscapes of economic governance in the UK. ;

        Neurowissenschaft und Philosophie

        Gehirn, Geist und Sprache

        by Maxwell Bennett, Daniel C. Dennett, Peter Hacker, John R. Searle, Joachim Schulte, Daniel Robinson

        Als der Neurowissenschaftler Maxwell Bennett und der Philosoph Peter Hacker den Klassiker Philosophical Foundations of Neuroscience veröffentlichten, war dies die erste systematische Untersuchung der begrifflichen Grundlagen der Neurowissenschaften und der Startschuss für den bis heute intensiv geführten Kampf um die Deutungsmacht über den menschlichen Geist. Besonders kritisch fiel seinerzeit die Auseinandersetzung mit den einflussreichen Arbeiten von Daniel Dennett und John Searle aus – also mit jenen beiden Denkern, die von der neurowissenschaftlichen Seite gerne als philosophische Gewährsmänner herangezogen werden. In Neurowissenschaft und Philosophie diskutieren die vier kongenialen »Streithähne« miteinander.

        Dilemmas in Animal Welfare

        by Michael C Appleby, Daniel M. Weary, Peter Sandøe

        There are many ongoing debates within and about the subject of animal welfare. This book distils some of the major themes of current debate into one volume, edited by internationally known names in the field of animal welfare. Each chapter is written by one or more leading experts who discuss, in an even-handed way, a provocative topic that will be of interest to anyone concerned with animal welfare. Issues covered include tail docking, farm animal production, neutering of feral cats and the need to conserve habitats of native wild animals in the face of threats from non-native species. Chapters address the different values and priorities involved in dealing with these issues, including scientific and more explicit ethical approaches. Each chapter ends with questions for discussion that may help readers to engage with these dilemmas. ; This book distils the major themes of current debate into one volume edited by international experts. Issues covered include tail docking, pet obesity, isolation vs. group aggression, neutering feral cats and the need to conserve wildlife habitats in the face of wild animal overpopulation. ; I: Preface 1: Introduction: values, dilemmas and solutions II: Dilemmas within animal welfare 2: Tales about tails: is the mutilation of animals justifiable in their best interests or ours? 3: Fat companions: understanding the welfare effects of obesity in cats and dogs 4: Welfare and quantity of life III: Animal welfare and social priorities 5: Improving farm animal welfare: is evolution or revolution needed in production systems? 6: Whom should we eat? The French empire at War, 1940–1945

        by Martin Thomas

        The French empire at war draws on original research in France and Britain to investigate the history of the divided French empire - the Vichy and the Free French empires - during the Second World War. What emerges is a fascinating story. While it is clear that both the Vichy and Free French colonial authorities were only rarely masters of their own destiny during the war, preservation of limited imperial control served them both in different ways. The Vichy government exploited the empire in an effort to withstand German-Italian pressure for concessions in metropolitan France and it was key to its claim to be more than the mouthpiece of a defeated nation. For Free France too, the empire acquired a political and symbolic importance which far outweighed its material significance to the Gaullist war effort. As the war progressed, the Vichy empire lost ground to that of the Free French, something which has often been attributed to the attraction of the Gaullist mystique and the spirit of resistance in the colonies. In this radical new interpretation, Thomas argues that it was neither of these. The course of the war itself, and the initiatives of the major combatant powers, played the greatest part in the rise of the Gaullist empire and the demise of Vichy colonial control.
