Within its ancient boundaries, Staffordshire is a county of diverse and contrasting historic landscapes. World-renowned industrial complexes sit alongside agricultural systems; castles rub shoulders with urban-industrial housing; the cathedral centre of a vast diocese lies close to the birthplace of primitive Methodism; overtly planned landscapes mingle with the uplands of the Moorlands and the heathlands of Cannock Chase. These many and varied landscapes are both products and reflections of a multiplicity of histories, and students of the county have been keen to explore and relate these pasts. However, no systematic attempt has previously been made to express these accounts in spatial form. This book seeks to demonstrate by maps the various histories that contribute to the diversity of Staffordshire. With its succinct discussions and detailed map presentations of these themes, incorporating new thinking and recent research, the atlas provides an innovative and major contribution to the study of the history of Staffordshire. ;

Ludwig Wittgenstein wurde am 26. April 1889 als Sohn des Großindustriellen Karl Wittgenstein in Wien geboren und starb am 29. April 1951 in Cambridge. Er erhielt zunächst Privatunterricht und besuchte ab 1903 eine Realschule in Linz. Er studierte von 1906 bis 1908 Ingenieurswissenschaften an der Technischen Hochschule Charlottenburg und wechselte dann für weitere drei Jahre nach Manchester. Dort forschte er zur Aeronautik. Er begann, sich für philosophische Themen zu interessieren und trat 1912 in das Trinity College in Cambridge. Ab diesem Jahr begann Wittgenstein mit den Arbeiten an seinem ersten philosophischen Werk, der Logisch-philosophischen Abhandlung, die er in einem Tagebuch als Notizen bis 1917 festhielt. Auch während seiner Zeit als österreichischer Freiwilliger im Ersten Weltkrieg arbeitete er daran weiter, bis er das Werk schließlich im Sommer 1918 vollendete. Es erschien jedoch erst 1921 in einer fehlerhaften Version in der Zeitschrift Annalen der Naturphilosophie. 1922 wurde schließlich eine zweisprachige Ausgabe unter dem heute bekannten Titel der englischen Übersetzung veröffentlicht: Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Abgesehen von zwei kleineren philosophischen Aufsätzen und einem Wörterbuch für Volksschulen blieb die Logisch-philosophische Abhandlung das einzige zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichte Werk Wittgensteins. 1953 erschien posthum das Werk Philosophische Untersuchungen. Elizabeth Anscombes 1957 veröffentlichtes Werk Absicht ist einer der klassischen Texte der Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Schülerin und Vertraute Wittgensteins unternimmt darin den Versuch, einen der zentralen Begriffe der Handlungstheorie, den der »Absicht«, zu klären und argumentiert für einen engen begrifflichen Zusammenhang zwischen Absicht und Handlung. Nur ein als absichtlich beschriebenes Verhalten kann als Handlung gelten; nur dann können Gründe für ein Handeln gegeben werden. Nicht beabsichtigte Verhaltenweisen oder Folgen müssen hingegen kausal erklärt werden, so eine der einflußreichen Thesen dieses Buches, in dem Anscombe auch ihre enorm wirkmächtige Unterscheidung zwischen Absichten und Vorhersagen entwickelt. Absicht ist eine wahre Fundgrube brillanter Einsichten und Distinktionen, ein Standardwerk, das nun in der Neuübersetzung von Joachim Schulte wieder auf deutsch vorliegt.

Bis 1939 erschienen fünf Bücher in rumänischer Sprache. 1937 kam Cioran als Stipendiat nach Paris, wo er als freier Schriftsteller lebte. Er starb am 20.6.1995 in Paris.
