The Emperor's Favourite
by Siobhan Keenan
The Emperor's Favourite, which appears in print for the first time, is one of the four anonymous seventeenth-century plays bound in a single volume in the library of the Newdigate family of Arbury Hall, Nuneaton. Tentatively attributed to John Newdigate III (1600-1642), the play uses the story of the rise and fall of Crispinus, favourite of the Emperor Nero, to mount a critique of the influence of George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628) at the courts of James I and Charles I. The volume is illustrated with ten color plates from the manuscript and from John Newdigate's 1628 Parliamentary Diary. ;

Collections XVII
by Eugene Giddens, Siobhan Keenan
Collections XVII is the latest volume in the Malone Society's pioneering series of editions of miscellaneous documents relating to English theatre and drama before 1642. It is likely to be of special interest not only to early theatre historians but to those working on Tudor and Stuart court and civic culture, manuscript writing, household drama and early modern women's writing, as it publishes new material in each of these fields. The book includes items such as Revels Office accounts, a playscript fragment, entertainments, poems and civic shows. Many of these documents are previously unpublished, and have been freshly edited and transcribed; each has an introduction giving details of its date, authorship and historical importance. The volume will be essential reading for postgraduates and university teachers in early modern drama, theatre history and women's writing. ;

Transcultural encounters
Visualising France and the Maghreb in contemporary art
by Siobhán Shilton, Amelia Jones, Marsha Meskimmon
Art since the 1980s reveals a striking proliferation of works exploring the complex cross-cultural identities that have resulted from a long history of exchange between France and the Maghreb. This adventurous study examines distinctively visual means of presenting 'Franco-Maghrebi' identities in performance, video, photography and installation art. Transcultural encounters investigates the ways in which such art spurs a re-thinking of both postcolonial and feminist issues and critical terms in an uneven globalised frame. It demonstrates how this corpus develops art historical debates concerning gender and representation, while also considering emerging visions of the Maghreb. Analysing a wide range of works presented in galleries, online or in the street, this study shows how they test the boundaries of established art genres, calling for the invention of new modalities of 'reading' transnational visual culture. The first book to explore postcolonial and feminist approaches to contemporary art from a 'Francophone' space, Transcultural encounters incorporates much material that has previously received little critical attention. The book will be of interest to researchers in French studies, postcolonial studies, visual studies and gender studies, as well as curators and artists working across cultures and media. ;
