        Darin Dance started his own publishing and photography business in 2014: The Bach Doctor Press after researching and taking photographs for many book projects while working collaboratively with fellow Ngāi Tahu writers.  He firmly believes that with the retrenchment of the main publishing houses back to Australia, America and Europe, our remarkable “Kiwi” voices and stories will be lost and unheard unless new publishing ventures are prepared to fill this void.  This has become his mission to promote our unique kōrero and pakiwaitara (stories and legends).

        Territorial politics and health policy

        UK health policy in comparative perspective

        by Scott L. Greer

        This study is the first large-scale comparison of policy and divergence in the UK since devolution. Based on extensive original research, it argues that we see substantial divergence in policies and social citizenship among the four parts of the UK as its autonomous political systems try to solve the unpredictable and difficult puzzles of health policy-making. ;

        Essays

        In der überarbeiteten Fassung der Übertragung von Paul Melchers. Herausgegeben und mit einem Nachwort versehen von Helmut Winter

        by Francis Bacon, Helmut Winter, Paul Melchers, Helmut Winter, Helmut Winter

        Die erste Ausgabe der »Essays« erschien 1597, erweiterte Fassungen 1612 und 1625. Knapp und nüchtern im Stil, geht es darin um Öffentliches (»Von hohen Ämtern, Von Parteien«) wie Privates (»Von Anhängern und Freunden, Vom Gespräch«), aber auch um allgemein Menschliches (»Von der Wahrheit, Von der Menschennatur«). Bacon verstand die »Essays« als eine Art Gebrauchsanleitung für das Überleben des Einzelnen in der Gesellschaft: Der Mensch sollte sich anpassen und verbessern können, getreu der Formel: »Das Benehmen der Menschen sei wie ihre Kleidung, nicht zu eng oder zu knapp, sondern mit Raum zu Bewegung und Übung.« Niemandem ist es gelungen, Ursache und Wirkung menschlicher Handlungen in ihren psychischen und sozialen Verflechtungen so prägnant zu beschreiben wie Francis Bacon, der, angeregt von Montaignes »Essais«, von Galilei und Descartes, in seinem Werk die Fundamente des modernen Denkens gelegt hat.

        Aphids on the World's Trees

        An Identification and Information Guide

        by Roger L Blackman, Victor F Eastop

        This book provides a comprehensive, species-by-species account of all the world’s tree-dwelling aphids. It can be used both as an identification guide by entomologists and taxonomists, and as a database in studies of biosystematics and biodiversity. In all, 1758 aphid species are covered, feeding on trees in 355 genera. There are detailed host lists and illustrated keys to the aphids colonising each tree genus, followed by a systematic treatment of the aphid species in alphabetical order of genera, with information on appearance in life, host range, distribution, life cycle and natural enemies. There are 722 drawings, 108 photographs and more than 1800 literature references. The volume will be a standard reference for workers in entomology and forestry.

        Securitising Russia

        The domestic politics of Vladimir Putin

        by Bettina Renz, Edwin Bacon, Julian Cooper

        Securitising Russia shows the impact of twenty-first-century security concerns on the way Russia is ruled. It demonstrates how President Putin has wrestled with terrorism, immigration, media freedom, religious pluralism, and economic globalism, and argues that fears of a return to old-style authoritarianism oversimplify the complex context of contemporary Russia. The book focuses on the internal security issues common to many states in the early twenty-first-century, and places them in the particular context of Russia. Detailed analysis of the place of security in Russia's political discourse and policy-making reveals nuances often missing from overarching assessments of Russia today. To characterise the Putin regime as the 'KGB-resurgent' is to miss vital continuities, contexts, and on-going political conflicts which make up the contemporary Russian scene. Securitising Russia draws together current debates about whether Russia is a 'normal' country developing its own democratic and market structures, or a nascent authoritarian regime returning to the past. ;

        British and Irish Butterflies

        An Island Perspective

        by Roger L H Dennis, Peter B Hardy

        Islands are special places; they can be havens for unique plants and animals and refuges for wildlife. This book investigates the biogeography of butterfly species over the British islands, particularly the factors that influence their presence on the islands and that have made each island's butterfly fauna distinctive. The book contains a full log of records of species on the islands and much supporting information. The first three chapters set the scene, illustrating the basics of island biogeography theory, their changing circumstances during the current Holocene interglacial, and studies of natural history of British butterflies that mark the islands as the most intensively studied region for wildlife in the world. The book advances by increasing resolution downscale from a European continental perspective, through patterns and changes on the British mainland, a comparison of the two dominant islands of Britain and Ireland, to a close inspection of the dynamics of species on the multitude of offshore islands. Detailed investigations include contrasts in species' richness on the islands and then of the incidences of each species. Case studies highlight the continual turnover of species on islands. Attention is then given to evolutionary changes since the time that glaciers enveloped Europe. A powerful message is conveyed for the maintenance of butterfly species on the smaller British islands now experiencing population losses at a rate unprecedented since the spread of the last ice sheets: the incontrovertible importance of maintaining populations of species on nearby mainland sources for islands as pools for future migrants. This book is enhanced with supporting material. To access the Online Supplementary Appendices below, please visit: http://www.cabi.org/openresources/95061.
