Crónica del alba is a novel by Sender with a Civil War background, like the popular Réquiem por un campesino español, also in this series. The author evokes his childhood in rural Aragón at the beginning of the twentieth century in a book which has a charm and something of the character of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The young Pepe fights to believe in himself as a hero in the face of a world, and a father bent on putting him down. He is supported by his girlfriend, Valentina, who believes in him implicitly and often ends up in as much trouble as him. But there is something more here than scrapes and mischief-making. It is written by an older and disillusioned Pepe who has known real heroism and is now detained in a prison camp for Spanish Civil War refugees in southern France. The novel raises challenging questions about the loss of hope, how people cope with disillusionment, and the place of writing in that process. Moreover, since the novel reflects Sender's own childhood it sheds light on the complex relationship of fact and fiction in autobiographical novels. ;

Kenny ist es gelungen, so weit in die moderne Logik einzuführen - und zwar unter weitgehendem Verzicht auf mathematische Symbolik -, daß sich der Leser ohne größere Schwierigkeiten auf diesem Gebiet mit Wittgensteins Werken beschäftigen kann. Das vorliegende Buch ist eines der ersten, das das umfangreiche Œuvre Wittgensteins als ganzes darstellt; sein Wert liegt nicht zuletzt darin, daß es sich ausführlich mit den erst kürzlich publizierten Werken aus Wittgensteins mittlerer Zeit befaßt: mit den Philosophischen Bemerkungen und der Philosophischen Grammatik.

Eines Tages ist es da. Steht am Ende einer Sackgasse mitten in der Stadt. Es ist ein großes Kind. Den Blick hält es demütig zu Boden gesenkt, seine Haut ist rissig. Der Künstler hat es ihnen zur Vollendung überlassen, hat ihnen die Aufgabe übertragen, es 'in die allgemein als vollkommen empfundene Form eines Kindes zu bringen'. Zuerst treibt die Kunstbegeisterung die Bewohner der Stadt, dann kommen sie als Pilger ihrer Wut, verlieren prügelnd die Kontrolle über sich und beinahe auch ihren Verstand. Nach den beiden von der Kritik bejubelten und mit Preisen ausgezeichneten Romanen "Söhne und Planeten" und "Die Frequenzen" legt der österreichische Autor Clemens J. Setz nun einen Band mit Erzählungen vor. Es sind Geschichten gespickt mit grotesken Ideen und subtilem Horror, voller gewalttätiger Momente und zärtlicher Gesten. Wie in den Romanen präsentiert sich Setz auch in der kurzen Form als scharfer Beobachter der menschlichen Natur und einfühlsamer, geradezu liebevoller Porträtist ihrer Eigenarten.

Agroforestry refers to land use systems in which trees or shrubs are grown in association with agricultural crops, or pastures and livestock. From its inception, it has contained a strong element of soil management. Well-designed and managed agroforestry systems have the potential to control run-off and erosion, maintain soil organic matter and physical properties, and promote nutrient cycling. By these means, agroforestry can make a major contribution to sustainable land use. The previous edition of this book, entitled Agroforestry for Soil Conservation (1989), was based on indirect evidence from agriculture, forestry and soil science. The present work provides a new synthesis, drawing on over 700 published sources dating largely from the 1990s. These include both results of field trials of agronomy systems, and research into the plant-soil processes which take place within them. Soil conservation in its narrower sense, the control of erosion, is treated alongside other equally important aspects of soil management, such as nutrient cycling. The new edition summarizes the present state of knowledge and indicates needs for research. It is essential reading for all concerned with agroforestry, whether as students, research scientists, or for practical purposes of development. It is also of interest to soil scientists, agronomists and foresters. Anthony Young was for nine years a Principal Scientist with the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), Nairobi, Kenya. He was previously Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK, from which he received the degree of Doctor of Science. He was a joint author of the FAO standard texts on land evaluation and land use planning. Besides these, his other books include Soil Survey and Land Evaluation (1981) and Land Resources: Now and for the Future (1998). He is now Honorary Research Fellow in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia.
