Nanoformulations for Sustainable Agriculture and Environmental Risk Mitigation

by Zeba Khan, Nicoleta Anca Sutan

Nanotechnology research and its application in agriculture has become a major focus in recent years. Nanoformulations offer the possibility to develop more efficient and less damaging agrochemicals in the environment. Smart delivery systems for nanosensors, molecules that can help to detect biotic or abiotic stresses before they can affect production, are being developed and applied. Nanotechnology also provides new techniques for genetic manipulation and plant breeding. The use of nanoformulations in agriculture is increasingly being used to enhance food values, reduce agricultural inputs, improve nutrient contents and create a longer shelf life for many products. Nanotechnology is also being applied to many aspects of food security, disease treatment, new tools for pathogen detection, effective delivery systems and packaging materials. It is hoped that all these applications will help meet the needs of a growing population, and help mitigate the effects of climate change and other ecological disturbances. This book highlights new applications of these nanoforms in the field of agricultural science. It is written by an international team of experts from across this broad discipline. The book is essential reading for graduate students, researchers and practitioners involved in the application of nanotechnology in agriculture. The book · examines the role of nano-formulations in crop yield improvement whilst reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. · covers specially enabled delivery systems for the release of nanoformulations, field-sensing systems to monitor environmental stresses, and improvement of plant traits against environmental stress and diseases · is well written, unambiguous, simple, lucid, scientific and precise and chapters are supplemented with ample illustrations and case studies to clarify and summarize key points.

Politicising and gendering care for older people

        Multidisciplinary perspectives from Europe

by Anca Dohotariu, Ana Paula Gil, Lubica Volanská

This book offers a new critical framework for understanding the processes of politicising and gendering care for older people and their manifestations in several European contexts. It interrogates how care for older adults varies across time and place while searching for an in-depth comprehension of how it becomes an arena of political struggle and the object of public policy in different countries and at various societal and political levels. It brings together multidisciplinary contributions that examine the issue of care for older people as a political concern from many angles, such as problematising care needs, long-term care policies, home care services, institutional services and family care. The contributions reveal the diversity of situations in which the processes of politicising and gendering care for older adults overlap, contradict or reinforce each other while leading to increased gender (in)equalities on different levels.

        ATTENTION TO ART AND ANIMALS

by Juan Francisco Bascuñán and Alejandra Figueroa

What is a little monkey by Frida Kahlo’s shoulder doing? What is a lamb looking for among colorful geometric figures? Why is a beautiful young woman painted by Leonardo da Vinci holding a stoat in her arms? How do Magritte’s owl-leaves fly? With the focus on something that usually catches their attention, the book invites children to reflect on the animals present in paintings by famous artists, introducing them, in a didactic and entertaining way, to the fascinating world of paintings. This book-game encourages the young readers to discover, through different cut-outs in the pages, details of paintings representative of the main styles, in a journey through different periods.

        A Clinical Handbook

        by Ahmad Al-Sukaini|Mohsin Azam|Ash Samanta

Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is an essential resource for medical students who need an introduction, understanding and overview of the subject. Most competing texts either burden medical students with information they do not require, or cover rheumatology alongside orthopaedics and as a result compromise fundamentals of rheumatology. This book is different – it provides all the information students need during their rheumatology placement and signposts them to where they can find further information. A definition and brief pathophysiology for each condition is provided, which is linked to the respective clinical features. The book covers the core elements of diagnosis and treatment based on the latest national guidelines to swiftly bring students and junior doctors in training up-to-date. Self-assessment questions and an OSCE chapter provide a way of checking that users have understood and grasped the core material, as well as enabling students to be well equipped for their written and OSCE examinations. Written by two medical students and an experienced consultant rheumatologist, the book combines a reader-friendly writing style with coverage of the material through clinical experience of a professional in the field. Printed in full colour throughout, with an attractive design, a clear and concise writing style as well as a range of pedagogical features including an array of mnemonics, pictures and diagrams, Rheumatology: A clinical handbook is exactly the sort of book medical students and newly qualified doctors would benefit from.
