        Ecological World View

        by Charles Krebs

Written as an introduction for non-ecology majors, The Ecological World View is an important new text from Professor Charles Krebs, the highly successful author of several mainstream ecology textbooks. It is suitable for any course designed for science majors in general, and for biology students who are interested in a career in medicine, dentistry, or biotechnology. From the basic principles of population dynamics presented in this text, students will be able to understand the applied problems that appear in every newspaper - human population growth, pest control in agriculture, and the conservation of rare species. Action on practical problems can then flow from a conceptual understanding of theoretical ecological problems and an insight is gained into how the natural world works and how humans interact with the ecosystems of the planet.

        Franz Marc Tierschicksale

        by Gloria Köpnick, Rainer Stamm

        Joseph Losey

        by Colin Gardner

The career of Wisconsin-born Joseph Losey spanned over four decades and several countries. A self-proclaimed Marxist and veteran of the 1930s Soviet agit-prop theater, he collaborated with Bertholt Brecht before directing noir B-pictures in Hollywood. A victim of McCarthyism, he later crossed the Atlantic to direct a series of seminal British films such as "Time Without Pity," "Eve," "The Servant," and "The Go-Between," which mark him as one of the cinema's greatest baroque stylists. His British films reflect on exile and the outsider's view of a class-bound society in crisis through a style rooted in the European art house tradition of Resnais and Godard. Gardner employs recent methodologies from cultural studies and poststructural theory, exploring and clarifying the films' uneasy tension between class and gender, and their explorations of fractured temporality.
