Shaping spirituality in the Netherlands

Discalced Carmelite convents are among the most influential wellsprings of female spirituality in the Catholic tradition, as the names of Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux and Edith Stein attest. Behind these 'great Carmelites' stood communities of women who developed discourses on their relationship with God and their identity as a spiritual elite in the church and society. This book looks at these discourses as formulated by Carmelites in the Netherlands, from their arrival there in 1872 up to the recent past, providing an in-depth case study of the spiritualities of modern women contemplatives. The female religious life was a transnational phenomenon, and the book draws on sources and scholarship in English, Dutch, French and German to provide insights on gendered spirituality, memory and the post-conciliar renewal of the religious life.

Benito Pérez Galdós wurde 1843 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria geboren. Im Alter von 19 Jahren ging er nach Madrid, um Jura zu studieren. Dort lernte er Francisco Giner de los Ríos kennen, den Begründer der Institución Libre de Enseñanza, der ihn mit der Philosophie des Krausismo vertraut machte und ihn zum Schreiben ermutigte. Seinen ersten, noch von der Romantik beeinflußten Roman La fontana de oro veröffentlichte Galdós 1870. Er beschäftigte sich intensiv mit den Werken von Balzac und Dickens, die sein erzählerisches Werk zunehmend prägten. 1873 begann Galdós sein Projekt der Episodios nacionales, einem Zyklus historischer Romane, die sich mit der spanischen Geschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts auseinandersetzen. Zwischen 1873 und 1912 entstanden 46 Romane in diesem Zyklus. Galdós arbeitete auch als Journalist und schrieb Artikel zu gesellschaftlichen und politischen Problemen seiner Zeit. Galdós gilt aber vor allem als der Begründer des modernen spanischen Romans. Er schrieb weitere 32 Romane, die vorwiegend das Leben der spanischen Bourgeoisie, deren Gebräuche und Moralvorstellungen schildern und sich durch die feine psychologische Durchdringung der Charaktere auszeichnen. Zu den bekanntesten zählen Doña Perfecta (1876) und Fortunata y Jacinta (1886/87). In den 1890er Jahren beschäftigte Galdós sich auch mit dem Theater und schrieb mehrere Stücke. 1897 wurde Galdós Mitglied der Königlichen Spanischen Akademie der Sprache. Er engagierte sich auch politisch und war 1907 Spitzenkandidat der Republikanisch-Sozialistischen Partei in Madrid. 1912 erblindete er und starb 1920 in Madrid.

Mom came up with a method to make us forget any ugly things that happened to us and, at the same time, always remember a lesson from them all. She would rescue a fragment or piece of dialogue from a book that she considered appropriate for the occasion and then, with her perfect handwriting, she would write it on one of the white kitchen tiles. This way, when walking past them, we would read them and remember the reason behind it understanding that, despite how much something could hurt, there was always somebody that had felt the same way before. And it wasn’t just anybody: under every quote, she would write the author or character’s name, to give voice to the emotions and life experiences that we will all, with no exception, go through one day. This is how she persuaded us to believe that somebody had already felt that way and that, even in every darkness our imaginations would create, the most beautiful stories can be written down. Eventually, the kitchen wall became a canvas of our lives, a diary of our younger years written by other voices from other times. Mom found the most romantic and authentic way of making us feel important and unique. And she was never wrong. Mamá ideó un método para que olvidáramos las cosas feas que nos ocurrieran, y para que a su vez siempre recordáramos la lección aprendida. Rescataba la cita de un libro o el diálogo que considerara apropiado para la ocasión, y con su perfecta caligrafía lo escribía en uno de los azulejos blancos de la cocina de casa. Era su manera de convencernos de que alguien ya vivió lo mismo antes de que nosotros lo hiciéramos, y que, incluso en los infiernos que nuestra imaginación inventa, se pueden escribir las más bellas historias.Con el paso de los años, la pared de la cocina se convirtió en el lienzo de nuestras vidas, el diario de nuestra juventud escrito por otras voces en otros tiempos.
